iPad in Wifi mode has slightly better battery life.
Apple:
"Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music"
"Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using 3G data network"

Is it true that the AT&T iPad 3G is still uSIM unlocked? If so, that's not such a bad deal.
Actually, I just checked on the US Apple site and it states that you need a "data plan from AT&T."
Can anyone confirm that it's unlocked as I'm heading to the US and wouldn't mind saving a few over EU prices.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)
A lot of this is not true. I was JUST in an AT&T store and the guy said their iPad plan was unlimited data for $30.
Similarly, if they were to offer the data plans, it's 200 MB not 250 MB as the article states.
I am still disappointed in the Bandwidth Caps and Cost for that bandwidth. Why are we stepping backwards![]()
I don't know about the one sold in AT&T stores (although I can't imagine that they would be different).... but normal iPad 3G's sold at Apple Stores are _unlocked_... see my post earlier in this thread about how I used my 3G iPad in Australia with a prepaid uSIM.
People complain of Verizon's pricing, but really it's cheaper than AT&T:
AT&T:
$15/250MB = $60 per gig
$25/2G = $12.50 per gig
Verizon:
$20/1G = $20 per gig.
$35/3G = $11.66 per gig.
$50/5G = $10 per gig.
AT&T only works best for you if your needs only require enough 3G data to check email and browse a few sites. These days 250MB is easy to eat through thus making the 250MB plan too low for the vast majority of consumers.
The other advantage to Verizon is the device gives Wifi to anything. Sharing it with your laptop or other devices comes in handy.
Of course the biggest disadvantage is the fact you have another piece of hardware to keep up with.
To each their own. I don't understand why people downvote this news. Are Apple fanboys really scared of choice?
....... But the sacrifice is a 2 year plan......../QUOTE]
I keep seeing this stated but wondering where it comes from?
According to the Verizon websight it is "month to month, no obligation data plan"
Plus, you'll get it for $99.00 only with a 2-Year Contract, or pay the full price.
Where are people getting that? The Verizon FAQ for this offer specifically states that, yes, you are required to sign up for a data service plan. But the very same sentence goes on to say that the plan will be on a month-to-month basis (ie. no fixed term) and there is no early termination fee.But the sacrifice is a 2 year plan
Since Apple still controls the firmware, I strongly doubt the search engine options will be any different than they are right now. And anyway, it's a very easy setting to modify if you don't like the default. Is the verizon version stamped with Vzwwww and has Bing as search engine default?

My mistake.
Normally on a MiFi plan, the trade off is, discounted hardware with a two year plan, just like a phone. To be competitive with AT&T and since you're actually paying for the hardware (iPad) full price, it is indeed month to month when everything is sold at the 'bundled' price.
Thanks for drawing attention to this inadvertent misrepresentation of fact...
People complain of Verizon's pricing, but really it's cheaper than AT&T:

Between the two options, the Verizon deal is better, no?
(Mifi hotspot can also be used for laptops, etc.)
Actually, if you really over-analyze the pricing...
A power trendline gets the best fit to the data (better than 95%) and shows that:
AT&T 250MB plan is overpriced
AT&T 2GB plan is underpriced
Verizon 1GB plan is underpriced
Verizon 3GB plan is priced right
Verizon 5GB plan is overpriced

Just don't go over your MB or GB LIMIT!![]()
Seems weird that Verizon would only do the Wifi model and then sell their own hotspot. ATT seems to have a way better deal here.
it looks to me that the verizon one is a better deal. it's too bad that i already have an iPad, or i'd consider the verizon one
Obviously, it should need to be an iPad CDMA and/or EVDO instead. The problem is their rates make no sense, considering they force you into a 2-year Contract to get their device at a lower price.
The only beneficial Verizon Plan would be the 1 GB for $20, but not even, AT&T offers 2GB for $5 more.
That's too bad, because I really dislike AT&T, and I'm stuck with them because there's still no better data deal for the iPad.
Hmmm.....I"ve got $629 to purchase an iPad. What to do?....
Verizon:
* Wifi only iPad (no GPS!)
* Connects via mifi to slower CDMA network
* mifi device only compatible here in US....won't work globally
* mifi device has a much shorter battery life than the iPad.
* Must configure/carry/charge/connect another separate device
* No GPS chip in the Wifi iPad
AT&T:
* Wifi + 3G + GPS Model for same price as Verizon's Wifi-only model
* AT&T 3G GSM is faster than Verizon's CDMA
* 3G is global
* Free access to over 20k wifi hotspots (don't need to use valuable GBs on plan)
* lower monthly service entry price point
I'm sorry....the Verizon solution looks adhoc. It appears like some engineer at Verizon said "Hey, if we connect this to that, configure this other device, use some glue and other connectors, we can make this iPad work on our network!"
The day that I forget to charge this mifi device is the day I regret this solution.
So Verizon's solution is one that folks have probably cobbled together a long while ago... their solution is less than ideal - no GPS, carry another device blah blah blah. Anyone excited over this needs their head examined.
Yes, Apple "fanboys" are really scared of choice.
Anyway, the AT&T plan adds $10 per gig when you go over 2gb. So, it's an identical $35 for 3gb and it'll be $55 for 5gb. That's of course $11 per gig at that rate compared to Verizon's $10.
Verizon's plan is a great deal if you need to tether other devices to a 3G wifi hotspot or do not get good AT&T coverage in your area. But the sacrifice is a 2 year plan, no GPS, slower network speed, an additional device to carry and keep charged with less than half the iPad's battery life, and no international 3G capability when traveling abroad.
