The apps only have access to the SDK API functions - I know Sandisk can read from the Lightning port so the app itself can read all the contents on the drive - it's a matter of developing an app to read from the port itself. I believe you'll see more apps implement this real soon since this USB 3 Camera connector is released!

Love to hear if you do decide to look into it. I was always under the impression that it wasn't as simple as this though. Since Apple hasn't released a way to talk to the device, it's not possible for apps to read from it. The other devices, like Sandisk, use their own hardware with their own code to talk to that hardware. Without the API being public it's very difficult to know what the device is expecting.

No one ever said the adapter would work with external hard drives. Not saying it is right, but I listened very carefully to the keynote and read the information About the adapter and nothing indicated it would work with an external drive, which was dissapointing to hear but I realised from the information that would be the case.

Why can't you see this is intentional, deliberate by apple to cripple yet another device? You have USB 3.0 port - AN ACTUALY USB 3.0 PORT that's POWERED as well. But yet you block access to everything. Apps themselves which are sandboxed can't even access an external device without begging, BEGGING apple for that functionality. If this camera 3 connector doesn't showcase how stupid apple really is then you are blind. I bought this because I thought they were decent enough finally to allow USB 3.0 transfer speeds plus I need it for my DSLR.

But I'm not at all surprised, just annoyed recently. Recycled iPhone 5 rebranded as a new iPhone. Gimped hardware specs here and there. If they don't have a fantastic iPhone 7 - even with their ultra hard stance against privacy invasion - I will have to look elsewhere. sometimes sitting here after all the money dumped into this iPad pro LTE with all the accessories I've bought I want to just sell it off and be rid of it. I have MacBooks and they get the work done but I guess I'm trying to hard to make this iPad pro succeed in doing more than it really could sometimes. It's just a huge glorified content reader nothing more. Sigh, apple operates just like the chinese communist govt when it comes to allowing more freedom in their devices...

You are absolutely correct - there are ways to access files within each app but to gain access to the hardware requires the the actual hardware interface to be available. There are some that are publicly available I recall but then if you make say a lightning port accessory there is that license fee you have to pay. This is a USB 3.0 device connected to the port I don't believe after looking at the SDK there is anyway to access anything else but images.

Wow, slightly over dramatic are we not. From the sounds of it you're wanting the iPad to do something it wasn't designed to do, nor has ever done in its entire history. You shouldn't be at all surprised that it doesn't.

So long as I'm here, no-one has to beg Apple for functionally. If they want to directly access the Lightning port, they pay a licence fee, simple.

There are already flash drives for general storage, USB and SD camera adapters and even one Micro SD adapter for general file storage. All of which connect directly to the Lightning port.

Then you have numerous hard drives, flash drives, SD and Micro SD adapters, multi format card readers and USB adapters. All of which create their own WiFi network to allow the transfer of files to and from any iOS device.

Is it perfect, no it could be better, but the options do at least exist and the cost for them start at ridiculously low prices.

As for the iPhone 5 comment, why would they change one of the best 4" phone shells ever? Most people love that design, so it seems logical to me to reuse that design, fill it with up to date hardware and keep the cost down. Sensible decision I think. And no, I'm not blinded by Apple, I have Windows and Android products as well. I just prefer the Apple hardware, software and general way of doing things.

Apple apologists always make me cringe

Worse than that they are taking out their wallet, ready to pay for anything before even knowing what the next recycled junk is going to be from apple these days. I like apple products but will only pay discounted prices after a period of time and demand at least some sort of good use out of the product. I am not saying the iPad pro is junk - i wouldn't of bought it if that were the case but these accessories are just pure rip offs. Just make an SD CARD SLOT if you are to have people import pictures. There's a lot of space in this iPad pro chassis - why don't they just reduce some of the marketing carbon fiber speaker junk to accommodate this? The speakers sound good but nothing ear blowing - there is like zero bass, all treble anyway.

People need to wake up and complain more and more. Year after year it gets worse and worse with the crap they push out. I didn't buy the iPhone 6 series not even going to look at the S line's the phones are so ugly it's just terrible design. Too large of a forehead and chin and the phone has a smaller screen than my Note series yet LARGER physically than my NOTE.

If the iPhone 7 doesn't come out with something great I'll look elsewhere. There aren't any competition to the iPads at the moment and that's quite sad. Unfortunately this just encourages apple to keep on raping wallets.

For those that say this wasn't meant for X and X - i understand that but it's $39 to do something so simple like import pictures? Come on now - that's just robbery. Glad there is a 14 day return policy this may be going back sooner than that!

This was always the way these camera connectors worked ever since their introduction many years ago with the 30-pin connector. You can import videos from a flash drive or a SD card if you change the file name to "trick" the iPad.

You can do all the hackery you want I just want it to stream from an external source. Ii don't know if the connector will read exfat or else with fat32 it can't utilize movies > 4GB - I'm going to try this trick! Thanks!

You want to stream from exFAT, theres an easy option. Kingston MobileLite G3, Wireless 5Ghz a/c, so it's pretty fast, reads from USB drives of any size and SD/Micro SD cards. Creates it's own WiFi access point, or can passthrough an existing one, internal battery lasts up to 11 hours of constant use. Best of all, they aren't expensive:

You won't be able to stream, only import.

The only way to get a reasonable use out of these 'kits' is to jailbreak the device. After that you can mount storage, and if needs be get around the sandbox via ssh and sftp (localhost).

The only downside to all that, aside from the jailbreak, is the need for the storage to be hfs+. It hasn't been possible to mount any other format since iOS 8. The apps that use their own made storage devices have built in libraries to read the format, normally fat32.

I don't know the main purpose of this $39 adaptor is for -

Well given it is called a camera adapter that should give you a hint.

Device support will depend on iOS having software available to handle the device. iOS has no support for mice, playstation controllers or hard drives. So you shouldn't expect them to work...

They have not been "explicitly blocked". The support just has not been coded.

The apple pencil can supposedly last for 30 minutes off a 15 second charge. I don't think not being able to use the pencil WHILE you're charging it is a negative...

Come on guys - that was a clear /s I was trying to make ;)

That's apple's way of "blocking" ;) I know it wouldn't work but had to try :) At least the connector will now supply power.

I just tried it it won't work. The good part is that the transfer was very fast :)

I'm 99% certain that it won't read an exFat formatted drives.

100% correct

Yeah, one tiny step forward. Despite being reasonably sure they never will, with them edging ever and ever closer I still hold hope that one day Apple will allow drives to be connected. Pipe dream, but at least there's options in the meantime. I really like the Kingston wireless G3.

You reminded me of my iPad 1 days when I first got the Camera Connection Kit combo and tried every single USB device I had at home. Gotta say, those were some frustrating times, and looks like little has changed. Of course, back in 2010 when technologies like cloud storage were still in their infancy, USB drives were still dominant, and it was pretty annoying that I kept spending all that money on accessories on my already expensive iPad just so it can't do what a regular laptop can do. Apple can easily fix this, just make the iPad more accessible to devices like mice or hard drives, and it will make the iPad a true laptop replacement that can be dependent on.

I have countless memories at work when I had the iPad 1 with me, and needed to move files around, or desperately needed a mouse as I was working on a big Word file, but the iPad was simply too limited. Sure, the iPad now has lots of RAM and real split multitasking, but some of the basics are still missing. As much as I love the iPad as a concept, my last iPad I bought was a 2012 iPad Mini, and sadly, I can't justify buying a new iPad when my frustrations about it are the still evident since it came out.

Aye, some things never fully change. No matter how much the technology advances there's always certain limitations. Deliberate or otherwise

Although, as you briefly mention, there are aspects that have changed, matured or just plain didn't exist back when we had the iPad one.

Cloud storage is, as you say, better than it was. We have various adapters and ways of moving files around that we didn't back then. And the Pencil makes for a great mouse substitute, with pinpoint accuracy.

I've never been so productive on an iPad as I am with my iPad Pro. My iPads were always just entertainment devices in the past. But now I can actually get work done on one, it's quite the drastic change.

What happenes if you connect another iOS device to it!?

The world explodes?
A hole opens in time?
Nothing that interesting... :p

Same as with the old one: the Photos app opens so you can import photos.

This new adapter will charge the connected device too, when connected to power.

I think this image sums up the current state of apple as a company right now very well.

Too right, the number of adapters I see in the stores now to perform the most basic of tasks is getting crazy. I don't mind adapters but I wish they would throw some in with the devices

Apple will always restrict functionality to ensure a particular user experience... You can have a USB 3 port but they will decide what you can do with it lol Just as long as people know what they are buying into its fine.

I think you should amend your thread title. It's slightly ambiguous / misleading.

How is this misleading - it's genuinely a USB 3.0 port. Whether or not the port supports a specific device, well that is misleading and that's apple's fault! ;)

It's to have a minimalistic look to the iPad - you know no open holes, etc. This is all Sir Jony's ideas. I don't mind the adapters but please let me attach something that will work with it rather than just importing pics. This adapter is invaluable to music people who wants to connect multiple devices together. Garageband fortunately supports them together at once.

FYI:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202034

Connect your devices
You can use Apple USB Camera Adapters to import photos from your digital camera. You can also use Apple USB Camera Adapters to connect other USB devices to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

You can use these USB devices with Apple USB Camera Adapters:

  • Audio/MIDI interfaces and devices
  • Hubs
  • Ethernet adapters
  • SD card readers
  • Bar code scanners
If you're using an Apple USB 3 Camera Adapter, you need an iPad with iOS 9.3.

It'll definitely be interesting to see if iOS 10 expands the capabilities of the Lightning port! I was thinking of buying one of these connectors to try it out with my iPad Pro, but based on the thorough analysis here (thanks, AliMacs!), it seems like there's not much for me to use it for (I don't have a camera, for instance).

I did get one of the Lightning-to-USB C connectors, though. I'll be glad to have that fast charge!

I don't mind the adapters, just that I wish more were provided in the box with the iPad or mac etc. Especially for the more expensive devices like iPad pro.

It's an adapter not a port- u make it sound like the iPad itself has a port.
