Connect your devices
You can use Apple USB Camera Adapters to import photos from your digital camera. You can also use Apple USB Camera Adapters to connect other USB devices to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

You can use these USB devices with Apple USB Camera Adapters:

  • Audio/MIDI interfaces and devices
  • Hubs
  • Ethernet adapters
  • SD card readers
  • Bar code scanners
If you're using an Apple USB 3 Camera Adapter, you need an iPad with iOS 9.3.

I bought the usb3 camera adapter and plugged in the apple ethernet adapter. Says not enough power, i assume i need the usb c adapter to run power for ethernet ? Has anyone tried this ?

Plug in your original lightning power cable and the 12w power brick it come with. You don't need usb-c power adapter to power any device. This connector will not power anything connected to the usb 3.0 port without external power.

I don't know about the Apple Wired Keyboard, but I just tested it with my Mechanical Keyboard (MagicForce 68-Key) and it worked fine, didn't need the external power.

Have you tried hooking up a usb audio interface to it? I just wonder if I could use my iPad to record small projects through GarageBand and later export it to Logic on my MacBook

NO - but there are quite a few apps that support AUDIO BUS protocol and is compatible with garage band. Like say some midi controllers you can preset all the knobs and sliders, etc in one app and work with garage band together. I have not tried to connect my Focusrite i4 yet but I doubt it would work anyway.

I've hooked up the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter + the Apple USB Ethernet adapter + 12W power brick and the ethernet works fine on my 9.7" Pro. I disabled WiFi and tried a Speedtest.Net test and it gave a result of 44 Mbps, which is pretty much the sync speed of my broadband connection (the 5Ghz WiFi also achieves this speed).

You reminded me of my iPad 1 days when I first got the Camera Connection Kit combo and tried every single USB device I had at home. Gotta say, those were some frustrating times, and looks like little has changed. Of course, back in 2010 when technologies like cloud storage were still in their infancy, USB drives were still dominant, and it was pretty annoying that I kept spending all that money on accessories on my already expensive iPad just so it can't do what a regular laptop can do. Apple can easily fix this, just make the iPad more accessible to devices like mice or hard drives, and it will make the iPad a true laptop replacement that can be dependent on.

I have countless memories at work when I had the iPad 1 with me, and needed to move files around, or desperately needed a mouse as I was working on a big Word file, but the iPad was simply too limited. Sure, the iPad now has lots of RAM and real split multitasking, but some of the basics are still missing. As much as I love the iPad as a concept, my last iPad I bought was a 2012 iPad Mini, and sadly, I can't justify buying a new iPad when my frustrations about it are the still evident since it came out.

I remember the good days jailbreaking my iPad 1 and I was able to install some app to read USB thumb drives plugged via the camera connection kit. This was before apple limited power supplied via the 30-pin connector in later iOS. Really a shame, because this use case can really be handy to access files on the go. AirDrop is not always possible. As such I find the iPad Pro is severely limited as a Pro device.
