There is clearly an Anti Apple campaing in the media

And with reason....

Apple has kicked everybodys butt:

Microsoft
Motorola
Samsung
LG
Sony Ericsson
Amazon
Every PC manofacturer...

Of course no one wants Apple to stand out with a new product. The iPad is not the biggest thing but I have seen so much negativity around it.

Lets not forget these are pre-orders. How many people are going wait until they can buy it and take it home. And lets not forget how many people are like me and waiting for the 3G iPad.

I am not sure if we can tell anything from these pre-sales.

still waiting

has others have said, i refuse to buy this device until features are unlocked.

No multitasking and no tethering.

Why leave these important things out?? its my problem if the battery drains faster.

Why not allow tethering? dumb dumb dumb stupid rule. I dont want ANOTHER data subscription. I will happily pay money for the software so whats the dam problem?

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/5.0.17405/1016; U; en) Presto/2.4.15)

I wonder what the guesstimate is for pre-order vs reserved. Maybe 2 - 1

with all the manufacturing problems plaguing apple products since the recent past, i'm just waiting for those "iPad Hairline Cracks" and "iPad Screen Problems" threads to surface. hopefully, for early adopters there will be none of these problems.

The numbers are what I expected for the most part. The Apple fans jumped on it and everyone else is just in a wait and see mode. When you leave Apple oriented websites most people are curious about the iPad, but it's nothing like the iPhone in terms of excitement and demand.

Only time will tell if curiosity is enough to sell a $500 tertiary device to people.

Wonderful

Like some others have said, it's pretty amazing for something that no one has actually got the chance to see or play with! In April, people are going to start to see it in coffee shops and airport waiting lounges and decide they want one. At only $499 I think we will see a lot of spontaneous "I saw one, I want one" purchases. If sales are lower than what Apple wants, they can just move up some of the International availability dates to allow the orders to match the manufacturing volumes they need.

And the bizarre game of increasing expectations begins. By April 3rd some publication will report every man, woman, and child on the planet has ordered two iPad's. On April 4th, another will report that only those in the northern hemisphere had ordered two, but those in the south just one, thus the product is a total failure. Gah!

What media are you watching? Apple gets more free press and hype than any other company that I can think of in recent history. CNBC does full segments just for Apple when they announce a new product. Heck, even my local news did a 2-3 minutes piece on the iPad when it was announced.

With that much media time you're bound to find detractors, but for the most part Apple is a media darling.

This article revealed no new data. Obviously that there are gadget freaks who rushed to order new device, when it was available. It's about 100-200 K in USA.
The question is what will be a steady demand for ipad after initial period.
Apple make a pretty smart move, when postponed sales to April 3rd. Now they can hide sale stats until July 21. I can imagine Jobs in a year saying something like:
"Well, so Ipad is a kind of hobby for us, but we still investing into this platform"

For what it's worth, the people I know who are interested in the iPad have all said they want to play with one in the store first so they haven't pre-ordered.

I suspect many people are the same. I'll be surprised if the pre-orders end up being a large percentage of the first month's sales. I bet that most sales will come from people playing with them in the stores and deciding to take one home.

I don't quite understand the negative spin implied by the article.

These numbers are incredible. It took Apple 74 days to sell one million iPhones in 2007. If iPad sells a million units in two weeks, that's phenomenal.

I guess they expect 20,000 an hour indefinitely.

I thought all the tech/gadget freaks hate the iPad...

And I haven't seen initial sales of each new tech device hitting these numbers this quickly. Any company would feel extremely lucky to sell 150K in their first weekend, especially pre-order only.

The negative spin on this hogwash is nothing more than Stock Market Manipulation. Pulling the wool over the eyes of CNBC.

You apparently live in the dark, because the early surveys came out showing the iPad had higher demand/interest prior to release than the first iPhone. It amazes me the number of people who sign up just to post an uneducated, usually negative, "contribution".

150k units pre-sale is great. Considering that Apple was telling people who wanted to "reserve" one that the stock was already low, I'd guess another
50k at least were reserved for pickup. The original iPhone, which everyone said was a terrible idea, sold 250k the first week, in-store. No pre-orders. That was in a good economy where everyone had tons of dispensible cash. People are instant gratification beings by nature. Pre-order is not as much fun as going to the store and handing over your cash for your new item. Just wait till it hits stores and the hype really starts to fly.
This is big.

Negative stuff has been coming mostly from sites like digg.com. There are a lot of geeks that don't get what the iPad is, they can only think of what they want. As I said before, this is not a desktop/laptop computer. Its is a new look at table/slate computers. This area in the past has failed, I think Apple has figured out why...

Those are pretty good numbers considering there's no camera. THERE'S NO CAMERA.

Can we please stop whining about no camera already. I can't wait for those other slates to come out, so people can see why there is no camera in the iPad. Not saying there will never be one, but Apple has to figure out how to make it work well in this type of form-factor.

the whole analysis smells like pseudo science. Too many assumptions.

Only apple knows the numbers.
Other reports suggest they have oversold accessories.

I want one, but I'll wait until Rev B and hopefully it gets a camera. I already have a spare iPhone, don't want to end up with a spare iPad too.

These numbers are staggering. For people thinking this hints at the ipad being a nitche product, you're so lost in the tech world, you have no idea what's coming. The fact is, the ipad is aimed at precisely the demographic which doesn't pre-order tech gadgets. In fact, most of the people who will truly love the ipad probably dont even know much about it's existence right now other than possibly apples new computer.

This device is for people who love to read. Books, magazines, articles on the web, lengthy emails, etc. This crowd of people often like board games, a type of game format which could work exceedingly well on an ipad.

Few of these people realize what the ipad holds for them. They don't usually scour over rumor sites and tech blogs. It's when the hold the thing, play with a friend's or otherwise interact with it, then they will want it. Like the wii, this device is gonna build monentum post launch, not pre-launch.

Before the launch the ps3 seemed like it was gonna print gold for Sony and the droids was the hottest phone ever, absolutely killing the iPhone in hype. Then, after the tech enthusiast got there's, tumbleweeds started blowing through the stores that sell the prodects.
