iPad OS 4.2 'Orientation Lock' to 'Mute Switch' Change Permanent

So you think it will be easier to take the iPad out of the case, unlock it, flip the switch, and put the iPad back in the case?
Yes, because you don't have to unlock the device to flip the switch and I don't have to uncase the iPad entirely because the switch is much more accessible than using the screen.

This is why we jailbreak.

Like the title says. This is why we jailbreak. It's wonderful hardware, but it sure sucks if you're locked down to what Steve considers least confusing for mouthbreathers.

Change brightness setting and wifi any time? Check. Real multitask? Check. Load files to any app on the iPad over wifi? Check. scp off the iPad to the server? Check. Can I reassign any of the switches to any function for tapped or held? Check.

So I'm sure the switch will be an orientation lock again in no time at all. But only if you jailbreak.

Yeah, I realize this post is offensive and smarmy in its level of contempt, but if Apple has no respect for you, why should you have any for them?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

Can we all stop bothering a very important CEO with ridiculous petty questions like this?

LOL - Apple fanboy-ism at its best. Ooooh poor Steve Jobs getting bothered with petty questions. Oh my...

I also dislike this change, especially since the mute button is right next to the volume buttons.

Nah. Click = mute / Hold down for 2 seconds = screen lock. But they won't compromise like this, even if they did with the iPhone Home button, adding secondary double-click functionality. Because they're stubborn and have decided already.

Steve Jobs is such a arrogant prick... when will he learn?

I love Apple's products and use my iPods and iPad all the time, but it's never a good idea to change a much-used feature (like the orientation switch) to something completely else without the option for the user to set it back. It can't be that hard to implement.
I predict a outcry from existing iPad owners when the 4.2 update hits and users suddenly realize their product doesn't work as expected anymore - this may hopefully force Apple to make a update with the option.

I agree, and I will be one of the whiners going to apple.com/feedback once the update hits. :)

Been an iPad user since day one. Had an iPhone since the original launch. Have an iPhone 4 now.

Making the switch a mute switch with no option is flat out stupid. Whats the point? The iPad can't make calls. The only time the device really makes sound is when you're interacting with it. Unlike the iPhone, where you might need to instantly silence the device.

At the very least there should be an option to make it a screen orientation lock or a mute switch.

I've lost track of how many times I've been reading an ebook on my iPad and used the switch to lock the screen orientation so the screen didn't rotate when I moved around to get more comfortable. Now I'll have to double tap the home button, swipe, touch a button, and return to the app. All because some control freak thinks thats how things should be.

Good thing the jailbreakers will take care of this.

Wow... douchebag!

I understand Apple controlling its iDevices quite a lot for a better user experience... but this is just excessive. It just makes sense intuitively to have the switch as mute on the iPhone and screen lock on the iPad.

As many have said jail breaking may be the answer for the iPad, giving much more control to the end user.

Recently I've really been getting the impression that SJ has gone a bit crazy! May I even suggest that a new CEO may benefit Apple? Blasphemy!

too bad

I prefer orietation lock. To mute, we can just turn the volume down to zero. I really don't want to push home button, that guy is already overloaded.

I have the Wifi-only iPad and have never needed to mute and ocassionally needed the orientation lock.
Personally it doesn't matter to me whether the orientation lock is a software or a hardware switch as long as I can screen lock both portrait and landscape.

You never use your iPad for business or in meetings. Many of us do.

Again, When will you ever need the o lock without waking the device?

Yes I do.

It's easier to use the side lock when reading science articles. I often use screen lock for this.

You probably use it as a toy - y'know - you're the "guy with iPad". But remember, some of us are actually using this to supplement our workflow.

If it wasn't for Steve, you wouldn't have an iPad or probably any of the other cool Apple devices there are. There probably wouldn't even be an Apple if he wasn't the driven creative control freak that he is.

You dont seriously think Steve sits in Apple HQ coming up with the ideas do you  I guess those 1,000+ employees are what? His groupies?

If Steve retired today we'd seem a hell of a lot more flexibility across the entire mac and iToy line.

do not like. at all.

i'm using the orientation lock all the time. it was excellent when giving the ipad in someones hand that for example looks at a pdf and has no experience in using the ipad (like my grandma).
sucks.

I know on my iPhone I would be very annoyed without a mute switch, however the orientation...... not so big of a deal....
Are there any situations where the iPad would unexpectedly start making sounds? Unless you use it as an alarm clock, no (and alarms are hardly unexpected, you set them yourself).

On the iPhone however, every e-mail, SMS, push notification and not least actual phone calls can cause an unexpected sound and that is what you want to protect yourself against with the mute 'switch'.

I know on my iPhone I would be very annoyed without a mute switch, however the orientation...... not so big of a deal....

And all the other people taking the same stance in reverse shows exactly why it might not be so big of a deal what the default setting is, but it IS a big deal that users can't make the choice based on their own needs and use.

I don't own an iPad, but this seems fine to me. Get used to it and stop complaining people.

I do own an iPad and I use the rotation lock more often than mute (around 5-6x more often). Considering that holding down the "-" volume rocker will after less than two seconds mute the device, the use of the slider as a mute is redundant, and considering that a simple switch has now been replaced by several steps, this is an unecessary complication.

As you do not own an iPad, you do not understand that this is an inconvenience for those of us who do, so please think twice before posting inflammatory remarks.

To those making comparisons to the iPhone I must state that the iPad is used in a different way - I do not run the risk of getting a phone call nor can I use an annoying 30 second sound-bite to indicate receipt of a message; the iPad is like the "Hunt for Red October" in that it gives me "one ping only", so I (along with apparently many others reading some of the responses) rarely need to mute my iPad. But it does get handed around a lot to show others PDFs, websites, documents etc. and as many are unfamiliar and therefore annoyed with the auto-rotation, the slider comes in very handy. Excluding the ability for the user to select what is the more convenient use of the slider is a step backward in usability.

So Apple won't allow apps that re-purpose the volume buttons on the iPhone 4 (like for taking pictures in the Camera+ app), because it might "confuse their users". But, it's OK to repurpose the orientation switch to a new (and redundant) functionality? Hmm.

Nobody is going to jailbreak for the sole purpose of changing the function of a switch.

If 4.2 doesn't have the option of using the switch as a rotation lock, then I will give it a week to prove that it is not inefficient nor annoying. If it doesn't, then it wil be the sole reason that I will Jailbreak.

I call fake "rumor".

Just like the last time he left Apple, huh?

This seems like the smallest most insignificant change ever.... sure I don't have an iPad (yet) but screen lock v. mute is that huge? Isn't the screen lock just turning to a virtual switch?

Where is the problem coming from? Just a physical switch preference over virtual?

I know on my iPhone I would be very annoyed without a mute switch, however the orientation...... not so big of a deal....

Phones ring, hence the need for a button to quickly mute it.
iPads don't ring, but the do get turned on it's side and straight up more than a phone, hence the orientation lock on hardware.

Steve just made his beloved iPad a little less useful...

Ok, not only are you expressing an opinion contrary to the majority, but you are telling the majority to stop complaining about the removal of a very good function for something that you have no experience with? Could you be any more of a prat?
