Good news: My 9.7" iPad Pro and silicon back cover arrived this morning.

Bad news: I still have to secure a Smart Keyboard somehow, switch my iPad mini 3 over to my wife's name, format her iPad mini 1 to get ready to get rid of it, and get the eBay auction finished for my rMBP.

I'm not touching the new hardware until I get all my old gear to its new home(s).
A man with a plan!

Initial impressions after ~4 hours of use:
  • Upgrading from a Mini 2, this thing is a real screamer
  • The screen is gorgeous. The new anti-reflective coating really cuts down on the glare
  • True Tone is fantastic. I don't know how I'm going to live without it on my other devices now
  • Battery seems about on par with what I've experienced with previous iPads
  • The speakers are loud and much better than any iOS device I've ever experienced
  • The Smart Keyboard takes some getting used to, but I've found that I can type fairly quickly and accurately with a little bit of practice
  • The Smart Keyboard does add a good bit of additional weight to the overall package, but so far appears to be a worthy trade off (I'm writing this post with it right now)
  • I wish the Smart Keyboard was available in a black finish. As it stands, I ordered the charcoal back cover to match. It is fine, but I would've preferred black

A man with a plan!
Oddly enough, the plan all kind of fell into place tonight. Got the MBP sold, got the minis all switched around, and then busted out my new iPad Pro.

Loving it so far--just getting it fully set up tonight, but I will put it through its paces this weekend. It's bugging the crap out of me to not have the keyboard cover on it yet, and I may continue my in-store search for one tomorrow. I don't get why more of these weren't available for a launch, and I hate having a naked screen! I do have an old Smart Cover I could try, but I've heard that's "not recommended". I wish someone would clarify if it's actually bad for the iPad or if they are just referring to the magnet alignment.

I replaced an almost 3 year old iPad Min 2 ( first with retina) with the new 9.7 Pro. gave the old one to my wife. I really love the new TrueTone screen and it is very fast. Also, so far no reloading in Safari. I assume the added RAM is helping that. I set it up as new and I will say all my apps downloaded really fast compared to wifi access on the Mini2.

I have the Pencil and have mostly just doodled with it in Procreate and Paper 53. Really nice and I can't wait to really draw something with it.

I screwed up and didn't order the keyboard case. I wanted to try it out first. Dumb. The local Apple Store had demos and I really liked it, but it is out of stock. Same with a near by Best Buy. however, I just ordered one from BestBuy.com and it will be here Sunday. (Had to pay extra shipping for that. But Apple online store is saying 4/20 for a ship date and I don't wanna wait.

Overall, I'm really happy with my upgrade!

Ummm How do you know that the speakers are not the same in the 9.7 inch Pro found in the 12.9 inch Pro?? Basically What is the DIFFERENCE?? o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

Sorry but nobody(even reviewers and users) has NOT even said mention they are not the same speakers in the 9.7 inch Pro until you said it!!

For now I am going to doubt you on this one!!!
I have compared both playing the same video from the same source and the iPP 12.9" is still louder and also has a much better bass to it. The 9.7" is no slouch though, the sound is still great stereo quality with bass, (and better than the Air 2.) :)

Glad you guys are enjoying your new toys.

Looks like a fair few of you are doing a big upgrade from a few generations ago - always the best way to get full impact

I upgraded from an iPad4. So much thinner and lighter! I had the Air1 for a minute but didnt care for the mushy screen- the Pro9.7 has none of that! The speed on everything is just terrific. Love the pencil so far. And no dead areas with all those new LTE bands i've been missing out on - Great upgrade!

I don't know if you have ever seen a subwoofer but in order for them to work you must put them in a subwoofer box (resonating chamber) to achieve the best possible, loudest, sound. Now you can still use the sub speaker outside of the box and you will still get a decent sound, however it becomes more dependent on the surroundings verses the one in the box.

In this case, the speaker in the 12.9" iPad Pro has a resonating chamber behind it, much like a sub in a box. This increases the sound output, quality, and depth. All four chambers are the same size so they are able to adjust the sound output depending on the orientation of the device.

This explains why the Pro 12.9" can achieve such a deep spacious sound compared to other devices. The only reason it's louder really is because the speakers themselves are much louder. The resonating chambers don't increase volume dramatically past a certain point.

The iPad Pro 9.7" however doesn't have the space for these large chambers so the speakers are essentially the same as the iPad Air 2. The major difference is they are different sizes than the ones used in the Air 2.

iPad Pro 9.7" Speakers:

You can see them on the left and the right, the left being the top of the device and the right being the bottom of the device. Very much the same style as the iPad Air 2. This explains why they can't produce quite the same sound the Pro 12.9" can. I have used both devices now extensively and I can tell you the sound on the newer iPad does not compare to the 12.9" Pro. The larger iPad actually produces much better sound than many laptops I have used!

Hopefully this clears everything up.

My pad arrived today at 2.45 pm (very late) Heres a picture of my ipad pro alongside my ipad pro9.7 with both of them with a smart keyboard . My keyboard has a problem with the spacebar though . It sometimes doesn't respond and i have to disconnect and connect again . Has anyone experienced this before?
Which one do you prefer?

I'm surprised at how little attention this thread has gotten.

I was unable to secure a 128GB LTE as most locations only had 32GB.

Apple had them, but they only take ATT Next on iPhones, not iPads. I do have the money to buy it outright, but I prefer to use next.

This is my first iPad, but so far it's "blazingly" fast! Apps and motions are all very smooth. They open in a blink of an eye. The Apple Pencil is also an absolute charm. Works flawlessly with the Apple Notes application.

Camera is also superb, and glad I can have access to live photos (I have an iPhone6 Plus, not S)...don't get me wrong, I don't intend to use my iPad for photo shooting, but it's a nice to have.

More to come!

Check out the Notability app.

Will take that Pencil to another level ...

I have an Ipad Air 2 and got this because I just wanted it but to tell the truth after using it last night it was a waste of money for me. Not that big of a deal and if you have the Air 2 you got a good one already.

I did install it. But to my surprise, the latency is much more noticeable than with the stock Apple Notes application. I used it all day at work yesterday, and then switched back to the Apple Notes app later last night because of the latency. I like the overall app, but that little delay is bugging me.

I wonder if it's some kind of bug?

I keep hearing good things about Notability combined with the Pencil?

Overall, though ... you still loving the iPad?

What's your favourite feature, apart from the Pencil?

Well I'm coming from an iPad 4, so they sound pukka to me ;)!

I tried One note this morning during a meeting, and it was faster than Notability, but a tiny bit slower than Apple Notes (in terms of latency). I made a "none-geek" colleague, play around with all 3 apps quickly, and she came to the same conclusion as me, the latency was noticeable on the 3rd party Apps...

Anyhow, yes I do love the iPad. It's my first one, so I got an even bigger "wow" effect. But overall, I love the smoothness when using it. Everything runs like a charm. Super fast all around, connecting to my iPhone's hotspot is flawless. I do not regret the purchase so far. Heck I might sell my Macbook pro and keep my iMac only. ;)

What Steve Jobs said during the original iPad reveal is so true ... holding the internet in your hands is amazing.

I have an iPhone & iMac, but my iPad has always been my most used and cherished device.

By the way, check out TuneIn Radio. A fantastic app which allows you to tune in to radio stations all over the world. Create a free account and save all of your favourites.

I love listening to everything from LBC, to Absolute 80s/90s, to the Brit Costa Del Sol radio stations & beyond!

It's also a great resource if you wanted to learn a new language, as you pick so much up just by "listening".

Das ist gut!

Enjoy ...

I've got to get a case on the iPP97 before I can decide,

But it's going to take some doing to get me out of the Mini 4. I'm a bit surprised by that.

Wow. In this picture you can really see the difference in color quality of the iPad Pro 12.9 vs 9.7". Not sure if that is just a result of True Tone being on but the colors on the 9.7" look wonderful compared to the 12.9".

Thanks for sharing!

Is anyone else noticing that the screen (with default settings) is much warmer than that of the 12.9"? Mine is very yellow, wondering if I have a defective unit.

The Pencil seems to be quicker on the iPP97. Notes has always been flawless, but there is almost no lag at all when using Adobe Sketch either, something I saw on the larger iPP.

The tablet comes alive with the pencil. Very, very happy once I touch the little plastic tip to the screen and began to work.

I don't think it'll cause any damage, but from what I understand, the cover won't stick to the front of the iPad, and the auto sleep/wake function won't work. So it's basically good only as a stand. It won't be very good at protecting the iPad screen, because it could just flip open at any time.
