Wow, I am even happier now that I got the 12" model.

Shocked that The Verge would post a chart showing 4gigs like they had proof.

By delaying the pro 9.7 till now...Apple basically just gave the 12.9" another push forward.

Wouldn't surprise me if sales jumps a liitle for the next 2 months.

They just came out with the 9.7 pro trust me there won't. Be a new iPad Pro 9.7 in the fall I don't think will see a new iPad in tell the spring of next year wish I can see but not In the fall

"Pro" is just a name. This new iPad could be called the Air 3, or the iPad 7, or the Super iPad, or anything else.
Of course it is just a name, but companies use names as marketing tools to attract a certain segment of their customers.

Apple calls this new 9.7 iPad, an iPad Pro because they want to target those who are more demanding of their technology. For THOSE people, 4GB RAM is an issue. For dear old granny following their grandkids on Facebook, 2GB is just fine... but she isn't going to fork out money for an iPad Pro.

This is why 2GB on the iPad Pro is an issue when it isn't an issue on the Air 2. If Apple didn't make the price of the 9.7 Pro higher than the Air 2, then any criticism regarding the 2GB would be blunted.

Remember when they came out with the retina third-generation iPad in the spring and then in the fall introduced the new improved fourth-generation iPad?

Ipad Air 2?!! I'm still using my old iPad 3 and seriously considering limping it out for another generation. As someone had said earlier, I'm still feeling burned by Apple for upgrading to the 4 within 6 months after the 3 was released. Gimping out on the RAM is not a smart move on Apple's part as I expect to keep this one for at least another 4 years or so. I'm sure that extra RAM would help out in the long run and I won't buy into that larger version for an extra $200...

Should the iPad Pro 9.7 have been called the iPad Air 3?

If comparing the iPad Pro 9.7 to the Air 2 then the notable improvements are the following:
+ Better Camera
+ Better Speakers
+ Better Chip
- Same Weight/Dimensions/Resolution
- USB 2 (NOT USB 3 like 12.9 Pro)
- 2GB RAM (NOT 4GB like 12.9 Pro)
- Smart Connector
- Pencil Support

The reason I put "Smart Connector" and "Pencil Support" on the negative list is because, while these are neat, they are also require PURCHASING ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES. So these aren't "Features", these are an Apple Revenue Stream.

So in the end then what exactly is the iPad Pro 9.7? Is it really a smaller version of the iPad Pro or is it simply an evolution of the iPad Air... +$100.

Very curious that there have been 2 new 'Pro' iPads release within 6 months and yet have different features specs - and not just with one 'top end' version.

How will Apple bring these models together in the future? Surely they wouldn't dare update both lines in October to a Pro2 would they (screwing over the 10" Pro owners) - given the fall indevice sales I would expect a further update (to both models) at either Q1 or Q3 2017 (so 1 year or 18 months following the 10" introduction). I guess it depends on how much improvement the regular A10 chip brings (would Apple want the iPhone 7 outperforming or matching the Pro tablet) and how quickly they can scale 3D touch up to the iPad.

..if had 4GB of ram the yes it would be worth the extra....

It also has a USB 2.0 Lightning port, not a USB 3.0 Lightning port like on the 12.9" iPad Pro. Considering Apple is positioning the 9.7" iPad Pro as a replacement for older Windows PCs (most of which have USB 3.0) and they mentioned photo and video work several times, how useful will that be at USB 2.0 transfer speeds?

While you probably cannot tell a significant performance difference due to 2GB vs 4GB RAM, USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 is a gigantic difference. IMO this is much more likely to have a real world performance impact than the RAM difference.

For some reason I don't feel as pissed today.

I'm happy that I bought a 12.9 rather than waiting for the 9.7".

Who do you think Apple is selling most of their iPads to? It's the dear old grannies. At the end of the day, I doubt that having 2GB instead of 4 is going to hurt their bottom line any. The name will still attract those consumers who fancy themselves as "Pro" users. I'm a high school teacher. I see kids using Macbook "Pros" and Surface "Pros" every day. It's all just a fancy name.

Grannies won't go for the 'pro' model though...

Do you think they would pay more for a heavier 'pro' version or the cheaper, lighter 'air' version.

If Apple is targeting 'dear old grannies' with the pro it's already failed (I mean the pro lineup) haha

Also MacBooks at least show you the difference - if you want specs get a pro, if you want a light laptop get the air / MacBook. In this case, the iPad pro 9.7" is not much different than that of the air 2 aside from the optional purchasable 'features'...oh and a better tablet camera.

Why not? The same people who were buying the Air 2 when it was the best 9.7" iPad will probably be the ones buying this new Pro, and would have bought it if it had been called the Air 3. They're the ones who walk into the store and say, "excuse me, I'd like to buy an iPad", and the sales person will take them straight to the newest model and explain why it's the one they need to get, and they won't know the difference between it having 2GB or 4GB of RAM.

BTW, if I'm not mistaken, the 9.7" Pro is the same weight and physical dimensions as the Air 2, or at least close enough for the difference to be negligible.
