iPad Pro keyboard cover closed is UGLY

Apple NEEDS others to force them to wake up and move faster.

I'd agree that they need to do something different, but I don't think what they need is to move faster. Moving faster is what is causing the repeated beta-like software updates. Moving faster is what causes them to release products that are not as polished as we have come to expect from them. I think that instead what they need to do is slow down and move more deliberately to continue making the absolute best products they can, and largely ignore the competition. That's what got them to this position in the first place, and I think to move away from it will eventually turn them into just another computer company with little of the old magic.

i'll be purchasing the smart keyboard for permanent keyboard on my desk, and a smart case for travel. (will use onscreen keyboard on location)

This is my thought too.

I'll be getting a smart cover as well as the smart case for travel. An issue with the smart keyboard for location work is when wanting to use the iPad Pro for drawing or taking notes. Folding the smart keyboard around the back of the iPad results in an uneven platform for drawing.

I think I might go with the Twelve South Surface Pad which is leather front and back and has a built-in multiple-angle stand. Apples bluetooth keyboard for typing.

Smart Keyboard is just too unconvincing and fairly expensive for what you get.

So many people on here express their opinion without having even seen and used the product. You can't appear more ridiculous than that.

Bollocks. I can tell you right now that with no screen angle adjustment and no palm rest that this keyboard will be 'adequate' and nothing more. It can have the best typing feel ever, but it still won't overcome those limitations that are inherent to the design. I don't have to use it to tell you that's the case.

actually you can appear more ridiculous than that... defending a corporation's product by judging people who don't support the corporation's product.

Apple's own press photos show that the keyboard cover doesn't close flat. Apple themselves said it is "cloth covered". Is seeing and using the product going to change those facts?

your ridiculousness is astonishing because you develue first-hand experience and base your opinion on pictures you saw on the internet. And I don't defend Apple's product - I can't because I've never used it. Pictures are just that - pictures. I don't trust the marketing material, either.

Looking at the original photo you can tell, easily, that the cover has not fully closed. In the videos of the keyboard being used you can see the cover being fully closed. Also the photo was taken at a bad angle, it is as if someone wanted to take the worst possible photo and then posted so that they could complain about how bad the keyboard is.

Very few people have seen the actual keyboard or even touched. Therefore I would say that anything posted here, based on that photo, is purely opinion, or unknowedgeable speculation only. That includes mine.

And if that's ugly (assuming that's what it will look like when the keyboard cover is closed), then what about the Surface Book (you know the device being called the best laptop every designed)? Isn't that just as ugly? Honestly I think the side profile of the Surface Book when closed makes it look fugly.

You can--by not accepting video and photographic evidence. Woven keys?, no backlighting? a floppy close position? completely non-adjustable? Let me know what you think differently after you see and use the smartcover.

I have seen this response quite a bit to the Surface Book. Yes, its different! Honestly, I think its cool looking and I really like the reversable screen for creating a canvas space to design. The suede-ish back of the surface pro cover--however-- is a disaster that collects dirt and wears fast. I feel i'm pretty impartial.

Anyone really liking the smartcover? Jony, want to explain this mess?

We are not talking about sketches or lithographs--Photos show this is clearly a floppy mess!

There is no substitute for viewing the product in person.
Yes, photography and video will do just fine. I remember this being a constant stable of the watch threads. When I finally saw the watch--surprise--its was exactly what I anticipated from photos.

As a piece of designed/engineered hardware, this does seem years behind the new Microsoft Surface Pro Smart Cover.

Funny how the tablet kickstand went from punchline to design excellence. Must break Jony's heart that this insult to unibody design is so damn useful, and generally attractive

Yes, because photos and video will always show exactly the things I would do with the product. /sarcasm

I've always, from day one, though tit was poor design by Apple which means they made a tablet, and you had to find something. A book, bit of wood, item around the house to prop it up against.
Always thought there should be a stand.

It's a tablet not a laptop. 99% I'm holding my iPad Air 2 in my hands or its lying on my lap. When I do need to prop it up for some reason the Smart Cover works just fine.

After seeing the abomination that is the SurfaceBook (who thought making a 1" fat loop hinge was a smart idea in a market driven by thinness??!?), I decided that this keyboard cover isn't so bad. Doesn't look great, but I can live with it.

It's functional.

But I'm curious: why do people keep saying the surface pro is more advanced and Apple is playing catchup?
Because it is. ;)

Microsoft has produced a tablet that is capable of operating as both a tablet and a notebook. Apple doesn't offer one. The closest thing is people claiming that the new Macbook is true iPad Pro. (in spite of the fact that the Macbook doesn't have a touchscreen nor run iOS)
