I don't think anyone expected any iPad to ship with OS X.

And it's better this way. When you try to have one operating system to run touchscreen and non-touch devices, you get the train wreck that is Windows 8.

I expect sarcasm with sniffies's post....
No-one will be selling a Mac Pro or 5K iMac for an iPad Pro, even if it were running OS X.

I really dislike the "Pro" naming, especially for these i-Devices.
Mac Pro makes some sense, but iPad Pro, or iPhone Pro.. nah.

I would prefer iPad Plus.

Here's the mind blow for 9.1... it will introduce lightning to usb-c compatibility. They'll make a dongle that connects additional accessories to ipads/iphones.

I'm really curious. Raise your hand if a 12.9 inch ipad is something you might want.
I'll buy one on day 1. I want something I can take lecture notes on. larger size and a stylus is perfect for this. I love my ipad air but it's 99.9% media consumption device for me. This won't be. I'll actually use it for work and will charge as a business expense which I would never do with a regular ipad.

I just want a non-sausage pressure sensitive stylus on a normal sized iPad for sketching and note-taking. No bluetooth stylus option I've tried yet is remotely comparable to sketching on a Wacom digitizer Surface Pro.
For the longest time I've been I've been looking for an electronic replacement for my engineering notebook, or even a regular notepad. For me, that implicitly means a "real" stylus that has a fine tip and high precision. You just can't draw schematics, write formulas etc with your finger or a sponge-tipped stylus. If this bigger iPad has a "real" stylus then I'll likely bite, but then my focus will turn to the fact that the notebook software on iOS is also lacking. My personal preference is Apple coming up with a viable answer to Microsoft's Surface (the latest one).

I believe a hybrid device is coming, just not in the iPad pro (obviously). It's weird to me that people are flaming others for being interested in something different instead of same old.

I used a friends iPad Air 2 today after months of using an iPad mini and the two things that struck me right in the face were the side bezels and the huge icons... It just looked ridiculous to me even though I used an iPad 3rd gen for years lol

Anyway my point is, if those things look bad to me now on an air God knows what they'll look like on the even larger pro... I just hope Apple adjust the icon size to be smaller and include more columns and rows.

To be honest there should be a few different icon layout options to suit everyone's needs as this technically falls under accessibility, an area I thought Apple were very sympathetic :-/

Are they going to make the app icons larger, or allow for more rows and columns? The iPads currently have too much space between apps. The mock-up for the iPad Pro looks even worse. Half the screen is just dead space.
I agree the icon dotted main screen interface looks a bit dated now, apple have just flattened the icons without given any real thought of making a nicer user experience. It would be good for, example to have a recent apps section, a bit like the kindle carousel.
It would be good at least to have a icon size/position option like OS X folders.

I think most people knew that the iPad Pro is likely to be announced at the October event if its going to be announced this year that is. It's also no surprise that it will run IOS and NOT OS X, being realistic we have known this since Tim Cook and other Apple executives have spoken out against hybrid devices. I agree, i think iPad's should be IOS and Mac's OS X, iPad's are not laptop or desktop replacements and desktop's and laptops are not iPad's. Personally i believe that the multitasking features in IOS 9 are enough.

The iPad Pro is not going to be for everyone just like the Macbook isn't for everyone, i'm sure Apple know this. Just because Microsoft have done a hybrid device in the form of the Surface, it doesn't mean that Apple need to.

So when will Apple start making products again for everyone? We have the iPad Pro, the Macbook, etc.,

I really think it's been a huge mistake for Apple to be coming out with all of these different sized iPads. We have the regular iPad, the iPad mini, now the ultra large iPad.. What is the purpose of all of this craziness, besides just taking up more space in retail stores and confusing the customer? What was really wrong with just having a one sized device? And if a larger screened iPad is the new direction for the device, do we really now need 3 different sizes? Do we really need 3 different sizes for iPhone? I guess the idea is that Mac Computers support multiple screen sizes, but with the Macbook, it seems they might be moving to only 1 size for the future? So multiple sizes for devices that should only really need 1 size, but 1 size for computers where multiple sizes has always been the norm? I don't get it.

Everything at Apple these last few years has been of the drip, drip, drip variety. Incremental improvement after incremental improvement.. Slow adoption to new technologies.

It's taken them 8 years so far and... nothing.

iOS 9 incudes an iCloud app that exposes the iCloud file system. iOS 8 introduced document provider app extensions that allow an app to give access to its files to other apps -- however I've never seen anyone use this functionality.

Yes, the selling a 5K iMac for an iPad Pro appears to be sarcasm, but all the other comments wanting the iPad Pro/Plus/whatever (the nomenclature is irrelevant, honestly) to run OS X aren't. The point is that iPads shouldn't run OS X. Apple wisely understand the difference between a laptop and a tablet, and they're not trying to compete with the 2-in-1 "I can do two things but neither one very well" category.

Since the ppi looks like it is going to be 264, just like the iPad Air, I would imagine that the UI scaling, including icons and all touch elements will be the same size as on the iPad Air. That means larger than an iPhone 6 and 6+, and larger than the iPad Mini as well.

I would also imagine that you get more space. The standard "looks like" resolution of iPads to date has been 1024x768. I highly suspect some sort of scaling like the 6+, a "looks like" resolution of something like 1440x900 seems reasonable to expect. Anyone want to do the math on what scaled resolution would produce the same size touch elements on the proposed screen size/resolution in the article?

Well, I'm sure a lot of people did haha. Whether or not it was a reasonable expectation is another matter.

I was hoping the ipad pro would be a touchscreen laptop. In other words, I was hoping the ipad pro could do everything a laptop could. I don't care about the OS as long as the capability is there.

But the ecosystem is just as important as the OS if not more. Apple could easily make a fully functional touch OS, but what applications will it run? Non touch OS X applications? Neutered iOS apps? It's not likely OS X application developers will be eager to redesign all their applications for touch interface without some serious financial motivation (money over time). The main reason developers were eager to create new versions of their applications for iOS was because iPhones and iPads were popular AND the apps were simple. Where will their motivation be to redesign their full desktop applications for a device that has no proven mass market demand? As far as I can see, the only way we'll ever see a laptop level tablet from Apple is if iOS and its ecosystem grows in functionality over time. Or if there is a sudden boom in demand for pro tablet devices.

I'm really curious. Raise your hand if a 12.9 inch ipad is something you might want.

Only if it has a pressure sensitive pen.

Already writing it off, huh... you people. Why don't you WAIT and actually see what the hell they produce? Novel idea, right?

And OS X isn't touch-centric... how many times have we been over THAT one? Christ. If the A9X (an assumption that that's what will power such a still unconfirmed device) is anywhere near as powerful as some of the new Intel offerings, and as specialized and plentiful as apps are becoming, it may just surprise people. Brand-new, ultra-thin MacBooks were just released; doubt they'd create an iDevice to "replace" those. It'll likely be marketed for artists, media, and perhaps business.
