OLED is a better technology in every way over miniLED with one major exception: burn in.

Because of the iPad being used for hours of drawing, I imagine this is a big reason they will stick to LCD. As much as my media-consuming and doesn't-draw self would love love love an OLED iPad, I think they will do a compromise with miniLED and stay there until they can find a good solution for burn-in on both OLED, and microLED as any self-emissive display type will battle burnin problems.

Same goes for the Mac, but not due to being used for drawing but due to static interface elements that are used in desktop interfaces (vs mobile or TV).

Patently false

As everyone knows. The whole point of Mini LED is to avoid OLED. That is, unless Apple has solved a myriad of technical issues that would be eligible for the GBOWR.

I was planning to upgrade my 2018 12.9 iPad Pro to the rumored early 2021 release, but the OLED display late 2021 is likely to be a much better, more noticeable upgrade.

3 iPad upgrades on space of a year? Very hard to see

why upgrade 12.9 for mini led only to bring oled? Not convinced

Maybe mini led is too costly for iPad line so they will stick with MacBooks for mini led and have iPad pros with oled instead thats only thing I can think of

At production scale, MiniLED should be cheaper than OLED.

I think burn-in will not be so much of an issue considering it's not been on the iPhones. But OLED does draw more battery power - not quite so critical on a 12.9" iPad Pro with it's large battery, but still battery life is a feature Apple likes to tout for their portable products.

OLED Finally!
I will finally be able to buy one.

It's been needed to justify those ridiculous prices since they hiked them up in 2019.

Off angle viewing of the lcd's is terrible.

It’s not clickbait. It’s a sketch rumor likely backwards. And as far as ‘superior’ is considered, for example; OLED uses considerable battery draw, where as mini-LED is likely to help conserve battery life and be substantially brighter over OLED.
If power and brightness are all you're considering, but hopefully people see more than that..

IPS glow, off angle viewing.
Especially on a tablet that people draw on off angle all the time I'd say these are more important.

This rumour is obviously garbage, but I really hope Apple go with mini-LED and stick with it until micro-LED.

Forget OLED in an iPad. I want to keep mine for 5-6 years, if not longer.

Unfortunately Apple don’t want you keeping it for 5-6 years, they want you refreshing every 2-3.

Apple is about profit pure and simple, they have likely recognised that the reason why iPad sales arnt what they want them to be is because the general consumer is keeping hold of their device for 5-6 years, whereas, in general iPhone users tend to upgrade every 2-3 years.

Apple has a vested interest in consumers upgrading more regular and try to push this as much as possible...

Likely going with OLED as they have struck a deal with their suppliers.

Devs: we can use oled in our ipad pros!
Apple: no lets wait for mini led
Devs: but that will take years. We can get oled in our pros now
Apple: no

years later

Devs: alright we finally got mini led displays that work for our ipads
Apple: you know on second thought...

I think something got lost in translation here. No way would Apple make the iPad OLED and then a few months later change it to mini LED. That just doesn’t make sense at all. Perhaps one iPad could be OLED while the other mini LED. Also Apple is supposed to have been pushing out fake rumors just to annoy people who leak stuff out

As had been said in other forums, it might actually be a completely new product that uses OLED, while the iPad Pro will use mini LED.
It was speculated that this could be a new type of iPad/Mac hybrid device.
With macOS Big Sur clearly designed with touch screens in mind, and M1 Macs able to run iOS apps, why not also create an iPad that can also run macOS apps?

I would have expected the next generation of iPad Pros to also be able to boot macOS, but perhaps what we get instead is the true comeback of the 12" MacBook in the form of a clamshell iPad with keyboard that runs mostly iOS but can also run macOS or macOS apps if you want to use both side by side.
And that device has an OLED touch screen like the iPhones...
That device is this "iPad Pro" coming late 2021.

And if it is not a 12" MacBook style "iPad Pro", how about a foldable iPad?
A foldable iPad Pro will definitely need an OLED screen.

I agree it’s probably two different devices. I really hope touchscreens are an option on the Mac and not standard. I absolutely hate them on laptops. I will go out of my way and even buy the cheaper model with lower specs just so I don’t have to deal with the touchscreen

Of course even samsung fixed the burn-in after iphone x was release. They copied apple approach to walk around the burn in.
Apple had implemented a feature that would "scramble" static pixels when it detected the user wasn't looking at the display to help prevent burn-in
Not to talk that until iphone x oled had never had 1 mil:1 contrast ratio after even a decade..so we need to thanks apple for that also

Interesting, I didn't know that. The burn-in issue does seem like something that might be fixable through software.

Modern OLED TVs like my LG 55" seem to handle the risks of image retention and burn-in pretty well (usually through a combination of pixel-shifting and luminance control when active and then pixel refreshment when powering off), but the static nature of the Dock and the Menu Bar in macOS would give me pause about using OLED for a Mac.

I can’t believe my 2018 12.9” Pro is already 2 years old.

Very excited to see what other updates are in store. Definitely upgrading.
