PS: The lack of Flash support on iPhone/Touch/iPad is simply not acceptable. There is no sane reason why users should not be able to experience the "full version of the internet" when sufing on one of those devices.

Sane reason #1 to exclude Flash: Users are no longer presented with an unstable browsing experience riddled with crashes and unnecessary use of resources, all caused by a proprietary plugin written by a company who still can't get it right for Mac OS.

Plus they claim to have the "best internet browsing experience." In my book, no crashes = better than crashes.

And the users are casualties of war... pathetic...

Actually the user Is the casualty of Mr jobs prima Donna ego. Just because he has a fute going.

Besides it is usually Apple who is in the other end of that. They have a name for extremely arrogant negotiation tactics (iPhone carrier exclusivity or music industry) and usually don't give a crap about support if it doesn't immediatly helps them (EA games any one?). But maybe that is why adobe couldn't care less about apple (as far as Photoshop and so on).
The point with flash is however that it isan integral part of many websites as if today a simply has to be supported for the "best Internet experinece ever". Photoshopping pictures to suggest everything works great sure seems borderline fraud to me

Just to make a point, Flash is not a web standard .

Yeah well there’s a reason for Apple not to want those 70% of games and maybe this serves as a motivation to those 75% of sites to switch to something better for their videos.

And none of that still makes Flash a web standard .

Great news! Now all we need is for the other 75% of the Internet that uses Flash to redesign witrh HTML5 to accommodate the iPad and to keep Apple from loosing profit$.

I could care less if NYT redesigned for the iPad. I'm just saying the video proves nothing at all. :) I've also seen that statistic (75% or more) in many various locations but I have to say I don't believe it and never have. If anything can prove otherwise it's the simple fact that the majority of smartphones don't support Flash and huge numbers of developers have been creating mobile friendly websites over the years.

The lack of Flash doesn't seem to have hurt the sales of the iPhone so I don't think it will hurt the sales of the iPad either.

U're completly wrong, those people have iPhone 3GS as me, they allready know how iPad will be, so guess what i am thinking? I will tell you:

On iPhone flash maybe just very small, but on an iPad it would be awesome.

So guess what i will do? I will not buy iPad without flash support, without a webcam(it was also missing on my iphone 3gs!), without multitasking( also missing on my iPhone!)!

And i am adviseing everyone i know and everywere where i am asked about, not to buy this version of iPad, because of this missing mainthings it has not!

Just remember i will do that all the time, greets;)

Steve needed to be more straightforward about the flash issue. The audience laughed when the lego my plugin icon appeared. This is the debut of the custom silicon. Makes one wonder what else was going wrong with this thing during the demo?

Can't believe people are attacking our photographers folks like telling them how you can do the same or better by using HTML5 + JavaScript instead of Flash. First, there's not really full support for 5, JavaScript isn't the most secure way to go

1. flash cannot protect your content either. in fact, there is no technology on the web that can't be cracked in one way or another. also every of those web technologies has a debug mode. the myth that flash can protect your content is simply not true.

2. javascript isn't easy to code, we know that. thats why things like jquery and gwt are such a huge improvement for web scripters and webapp developers. also, they are cross browser compatible in most cases, so you do not have to worry about your plattform anymore. especially for business applications this is a huge improvement and the companys are starting to switch there internal apps from flex to gwt. this movement has started but is still in early stages.

3. as for you designers and artist out there, we know that native web standard technology is no option. but please rethink: ipad and iphone are in fact small mobile devices. thats means they are a totally different plattform. these gadgets are no desktop computers or notebooks, the same counts for netbooks. flash sucks on those devices. so, if you want to deliver content to those plattform, you have to go with them and use their way of content distribution. and if you do web based distribution you have to think about small resolutions and touchscreen usablility. thats no easy task for someone who's not a developer and has no background knowledge. you may should consider consulting one, if you really need this distribution channel.

and thank you for this amusing discussion and the mouseover issue. that really helped me getting my brain started today.

yeah. and he also said twice: "do you see whats happing?" scrolling through the page with the broken flash icon. i think this was directly adressed to adobe. i also think he actually wanted to trigger worldwide flamewars pro/contra flash, to put some pressure on adobe. mass manipulation is a good weapon.

(am i going paranoid again? )

No you are not :)

There is no doubt that huge amount of "politics" played major role during that presentation...

Again, I expected more functionality than my iphone 3gs provides. That was the minimum. This thing went backward. My jailbroken phone provides more functionality than this thing (other than size). I just think that is SO SAD. What were they thinking????? Again, maybe OLD PEOPLE... the baby boomers are getting old and it's a huge market. I just don't see why they couldn't have made a device for the rest of us. JUST ONE. A $1,000 model that did something DIFFERENT. That had A REAL WEB BROWSER. THAT I COULD VIDEOCONFERENCE FROM. WHY?????????
:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

LMAO, the ipad is about $300-$400 cheaper than an iphone. And didn't we pay about $400 for our ipods in 2001?

I'm sure steve jobs is quivering in his boots at the sales you will prevent

Apple changed their video AD today to show that the iPad does not support Flash content....

No Flash = No Sale (at least for me... )

Absolutely...

Even if it costs $49 instead of $499 it would still be useless device for me without Flash support.

Defo no buy here too.

That's what a lot of people said about the 3GS and the latest iPod touch and yet they still ended up getting one. :) Not everyone of course but my point is that Apple won't suffer from any significant loss in sales due to the lack of Flash support. People have been complaining and complaining about this for a long time yet their sales keep increasing, developers keep signing up, and more and more apps keep arriving. The AppStore was greatest addition (and arguable the worst for a lack of a good way to browse it) and will continue to be so which is why Apple just gave us a iPod with a larger screen. They focused on apps, apps, and more apps.

I simply cannot see or understand why everyone is throwing such a huge fit over Flash web content. I understand it's highly subjective but the numbers don't lie. It's obviously not necessary nor will it ever be.

What people "should" be complaining about is this additional data plan on the 3G models. What if you already own an iPhone and pay your $30 dues every month. Why are we expected to pay $30 more??? lol It should be cheaper for those who already have a data plan (or free). :)

Well just steve jobs also knows, i am not alone, there are many as me, believe me;^)

steve needs to listen more to his customers and learn not to be selfish as he is sometimes i think!

And also he has to learn, the customers aren't dump anymore, as he tought maybe, only he could be that, if he think that way!

They had record sales last quarter. Each quarter is better than the next. He seems to have a better finger on the pulse of what people want than you do.

So let me get this straight...Apple took an iPhone, made it bigger, bulkier, less portable, removed the ability to make/receive calls, then stamped an $850 price tag on it and called it an "iPad"? Anyone dumb enough to purchase one should just tattoo "I love wasting money" on their forehead and then subsequently shoot ...

Not me. I was gonna by almost 50 of them for the company...no Flash...so it ain't useful
