"...the iPad is likely to be "cannibalizing" even TVs and digital cameras..."

The iPad is neither a TV nor a digital camera, therefore it cannot "cannibalize" either of them. That is an absurd statement.

That's probably exactly what buggy whip and carriage makers said about the Ford Model T automobile.

Nope!!
We were in the market for a tiny digital video camera (flip) and an underwater camera for use on vacation. we opted to go the iPhone route as it is a phone and has Video capabilities and other stuff. With that money gone, we decided to skip the underwater camera purchase.

and nobody NEEDS a camera. many people already have most other electronics and don't NEED to upgrade. they dont have a tablet and thus NEED to fill that vacant spot.

People NEED a tablet? How so?

Esp an accessorie like the iPad.. who needs one?

No camera, no ports, no flash, no multitasking, no physical keyboard etc, and NO success with consumers....sometimes "I told you so" just doesn't quite cut it.

The Blackberry playbook makes the ipad look like child's play. I dont know about the display on the playbook but overall it offers HD cam capability,un compromised browsing capability(flash),dual processor, more ram. It's almost 2011 and the ipod finally has hd capability and the same processor as the flagship ipad(no hd recording or cam)! All in the name to slooooowy spoon feed us "Now technology",in the name of profit margins. Why am I having to wait so long for this flagship device to play catch up. With what playbook will be offering shortly.

The ipad device is lacking in so many ways maybe it will be 3rd generation before it even catches up with what playbook will offer. And all you fools will flock like its something groundbreaking they are offering.

I've been saying this since February: We are in the early stages of the tablet revolution.
Congratulations, you're only about a decade late with that prediction
Anyone can pry a keyboard off of a PC laptop and call it a tablet. It's like prying the wheels off of a Volkswagen Beetle and calling it a jet ski.

Heh - - didn't take long for tkermit to get pwned! Great analogy.

BTW, I've already begun work on a similar idea...

Wow what an achivement!!!

Keep on sucking on your iPad cool-aid. There are 6,697,254,041 people on this planet. Apple sold measly 4,500,000 units. It is not even 0.07% of the population. PC industry is grasping to anything this days just to make some profit. Competitors just need to come up with iPad for the rest of the world, there is no need to compete with Apple as absolute majority of folks would not be able to afford it anyway. Interesting fact is, this 0.07% "drop-in-the-ocean" part honestly believe they are representing the rest of the people on this planet...:D

Heh, Gates was right that the last decade was a digital decade (VHS -> DVD; CD -> MP3, etc.), he was obviously wrong about tablets. But then he never tried to make something people wanted. As is usual with Microsoft, he made what suited Microsoft: Windows on more devices.

BTW, you know what the last decade could most accurately be called? The iPod decade. That must burn Bill.

Steve Jobs saw tablets right. He knew they needed their own OS, something that was suitable for the form factor. Porting Windows (or OS X) to a tablet is stupid. You need something that is responsive to touch in a way that works in the new form factor. The market agreed. This must burn Bill too.

Blackberry playbook has only been "announced"...it won't be released until 2011, which will make it compete with the gen 2 version of iPad, which will likely come closer to matching "technical specs"...but your assumption is that the technical aspects of a device (ram,cpu,camera,etc...) is more important than the usability aspect...and Apple dominates in this category, which is why tablet makers will probably be playing catch-up (much like the iPhone) for several years since they don't have the infrastructure that Apple currently has.

As for profit margins...Apple is smart,...they sell what they can, give the best user experience, and maximize their profit...if my business were run as well as Apple's, I'd be very happy...

As an end user, I'd love for them to cut their margins and give me the latest and greatest tech...but they don't have to, and to be honest, I rarely find that it effects my user experience...

Here's an analogy for you:
I've been saying this since February: We are in the early stages of the clean energy revolution.

I'm sorry, but have you seen a Blackberry Playbook? Oh right, you can't because it's been delayed until next year.

So no, it does NOT make the iPad look like child's play since it does NOT yet exist. Call us when it comes out and then we'll compare it to iPad 2.

I couldn't care less what Gates said. I never said last decade would be the decade of the tablet.

What I said I said for the first time this February, after I heard about the iPad. So this is a new prediction, made by me right here on MacRumors months before the iPad was released. Pretending that this is an old rumor is false. It was new to me, and I stand by it.

Dude, they're making them as fast as they can. If they could increase production more, they would. So you cannot possibly denigrate the sales news when:

a) They cannot make 'em fast enough
b) Every competitor is vowing to make 'em as fast as they can

Clearly they are all wrong and only you know how futile this is.

This sales rate is blowing past the one million units the iPhone sold in its first quarter and the 350,000 units sold in the first year by the DVD player, the most quickly adopted non-phone electronic product.

To be fair, the first VCRs, Video Cams, DVD players, etc were all up in the $1,000 early adopter range.

It always took a year of high prices and relatively slow sales before such hot new electronic products got down into the mass consumer market price range.

The iPad is low priced for a first year intro device. Especially from Apple.

Geeks do not get the iPad. They are so good at today's tech, when a new paradigm comes along they tend to judge it based on current tech standards. No keyboard! No mouse!

I agree with you. At least I refuse to accept that it provides a better browsing experience than a computer. I tend to run over 5 applications and 10-15 tabs in my browser, constantly switching between them, cut and pasting, all done on a dual 24" setup. There's no substitute for that kind of work.

On the other hand, ever since I was little I wanted to design my own gadgets. I wanted to lay out my own buttons, and paint my own content on the display. This is why I love the iDevices, because they're ultra thin, run forever with a single charge, but most importantly it's the ultimate platform where I can program my own custom appliance. I couldn't manufacture the hardware in my garage, but I can do the rest on my own. I guess an Android device would satisfy the same purpose as well.

I love my tablet PC for what it is (for creative work, when a stylus is necessary), but it's the exact opposite of what an appliance means to me. It's a brick, heavy, runs extremely hot, and the battery lasts for an hour or two only. And you can't call Windows an appliance by any means, it takes minutes to boot, and you constantly fight the stupid OS. No wonder the Tablet PC concept failed among the general population.

The Blackberry playbook makes the ipad look like child's play.

You mean the Blackberry that people can't buy till next year? You don't know what next year's iPad will look like, so how can you compare what people will be choosing between?

If the new Playbook is similar in any fashion to the Blackberry I am forced to carry for work, I'll take child's play.

Why can't you just admit that you were wrong about your analogy? Does your own self worth hinge on being right all the time? Don't be a sore loser. It takes a bigger man to admit a mistake than to keep on moving the goal posts. Nobody is expecting everyone to be a fan of Apple but give this trolling up already and move on.

I agree there is no substitute for a laptop when you want multiple windows open at once and switching between them constantly. I still have my laptop, and it's not going anywhere. Each tool for its best use.

So if that's how you browse, stick to your current equipment. I think that's not typical of most people when reading stuff on the Web, and for them the iPad is great.

Real versus fairy dust is hard to compete against. That Playbook app store is exceptional, battery life goes for weeks, display looks better than anything ever made, and the touch response is so responsive its like moving air - or vapor. The best part is when the ceo came out and showed the playbook... oh wait.

I'm not saying it's not the second coming, but c'mon, you can't compare a commercial and a spec list to a real product. How about waiting until it comes out to gloat.
