Waiting is a losing game. The next one's always better.Just get it,enjoy it,and when the next compelling rev comes out ebay it.

I have an iPhone 3GS and the wife has the latest Touch...pretty much 0 reason to own an iPad right now...especially if you add in the latops we own.

Irrelevant. It can't offer the synergy that the App Store do.

Why can't you just admit that you were wrong about your analogy? Does your own self worth hinge on being right all the time? Don't be a sore loser. It takes a bigger man to admit a mistake than to keep on moving the goal posts. Nobody is expecting everyone to be a fan of Apple but give this trolling up already and move on.

Hey man, thanks for the life lesson. Didn't even realize I was trolling. :)

ps: I am a very satisfied owner of an iPad myself

I can't say that you need an iPad in your situation, but I can state with certainty that the iPad is a much more compelling experience in kicked back your La-Z-Boy than the iPhone/iPod. We have laptops and iPhones as well and I will always seek out the iPad for mobile and living room use.

I was just on a one-week business trip to China (from LA) and saw at least 15 iPads in the airports or on the planes and most of them were Chinese. I stopped counting after a while. Saw even more iPhones in China (but mostly the 3GS or earlier versions). Apple has become like Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, etc. in that part of the world. Obviously, the iPhone or the iPad isn't for the average factory worker earning $200 per month. It's for all the business owners and senior government officials, etc.

I agree there is no substitute for a laptop when you want multiple windows open at once and switching between them constantly. I still have my laptop, and it's not going anywhere. Each tool for its best use.

So if that's how you browse, stick to your current equipment. I think that's not typical of most people when reading stuff on the Web, and for them the iPad is great.

Yes iPad is a glorified accessory. I have one, I know its uses, i still use it for the time being even. But, like a mouse or a keyboard... iPad needs something else to hook up too in order to be completely useful.

when the iPad can standalone, then It may start replacing things. I am still baffled that I cannot delete and edit songs or playlist in itune on my ipad.

Ever heard of 2 way syncing, across the board?

Exactly to my point. Folks should stop making naive global projections based on tiny group of people who decided to purchase this marvel.

At least the iPad purchasers only crime is making naïve projections. Can't say that for the politicians who have their hands in our wallets. :)

I dont get it either, if someone NEEDS a camera they will just buy a camera, regardless of what other devices are available in their price range.

Now if the Ipad had a camera and functions good enough in that capacity, then i can see it taking away from other comsumer electronics

Nobody needs a camera. Nobody needs an iPad. These are bought with disposable income. If someone has just $600 in disposable income and they have a few gadgets in their 'want' list, and if iPad comes up higher than the camera, then the iPad gets bought and the camera does not. If you have a lot of money, this is not an issue.

My reason for making global predictions is as follows:

Everyone wants to get connected today. On every continent, in every culture, rich or poor, they all want to connect with information and people.

Right now phones are serving this function to a greater or lesser degree, and they sell about 1/3 of a billion phones every year. So let's not talk about small markets here, or talk about what is needed versus what is wanted. There is no need to sell 1/3 of a billion phones every year, for you can just use the one you already have. Yet the phones sell.

Every year there are many millions of PCs sold throughout the world. This too continues despite there being "no need."

The iPad is so inviting to use, and covers 90% of PC functionality, that most people will prefer one to a traditional PC. Many of those phone users will enjoy having a larger screen to view information and play games. This is a huge market.

I'd say it covers much less than 90% PC Functionality, but I agree with the rest of your point. Potential Ipad or tablet sales in general can be large. Only problem with Ipad is that its would be trying to compete again Laptops and desktops now... where laptops before only had to compete against desktops.

Tablet adoption would have to bank on the fact that somehow people feel they need a desktop, laptop and tablet.

I don't think these systems are eligible.

The analyst would probably consider the Wii and DS to be new releases of an existing line of products (console gaming systems and handheld gaming systems) rather than a new product category.

Derr, but what about this and this?

Oh that's right, MR only posts news that praises Apple, without regards to facts.

I never buy the first gen of any Apple product (used to , but learned).

I don't see the problem buying a 1st gen product from Apple, purely from the resale value. I skipped iphone 3G and 3GS, I just bought an iPhone 4 and sold my iPhone 2G on ebay for $150. Nearly 3 years of use, I'd say I got my value out of that one.

I sold my AppleTV Gen 1 for $120 on ebay a month before the AppleTV Gen 2 came out, so I pretty much got a free upgrade.

Point is, when gen N+1 comes out, you can still sell gen N for a lot of its value, so upgrading is fairly inexpensive and you enjoy the first gen for what its worth.

Yeah, whether it's 90% or 50% depends on the person, I guess. But the way I see it, it's not going to be a question of needing a desktop, laptop AND tablet. I think within a few years people will be buying tablets and not bothering to replace their current PC/laptop. Instead they will keep them around for those few times they need a keyboard or something, but most of their time will be spent on their tablets.

I think tablets will become the dominant consumer computer device in less than 10 years.

It will be quite common in the business world too.

I don't understand your objection. The Newton was cool in its day, but the market wasn't quite ready for it. And the Fujitsu Windows 98 pen tablet? What's your point? Sure tablets have been around for a decade. But it wasn't until the iPad came along that they began to sell in mass numbers.

So a story that talks about how well iPads are selling isn't appropriate for a Mac news site? Why on earth not?

anyone else been reading several month old threads about how the iPad is Apples epic fail and the company will crash and burn over this? Fun reading. Look some up....

If anyone finds some choice quotes, be sure to share!

No camera, no ports, no flash, no multitasking, no physical keyboard etc, and NO success with consumers....sometimes "I told you so" just doesn't quite cut it.

Ummm, what? Is this sarcasm?

You obviously have no idea about what makes a good tablet. Let me give you a hint - it's NOT cameras, type of processor, or more RAM. "ITSS" (it's the software, stupid) - is what counts. And we all know how rich and powerful RIM app ecosystem is (another hint - not VERY).

Playbook will fail for the same reason why no one cares about latest BB OS - it's a year or two behind iOS and Android and just all around un-impressive. Same reason why Windows tablets are a failure, why HP tablets are a failure, and why Archos tablets are a failure - the software on these things is horrendous as is the resulting user experience.

If I am Apple - Playbook is the last thing I'd be worried about. Android 3.0 - maybe.. WebOS not likely, but maybe.. but certainly not Playbook.

There are 6,697,254,041 people on this planet. Apple sold measly 4,500,000 units. It is not even 0.07% of the population...Interesting fact is, this 0.07% "drop-in-the-ocean" part honestly believe they are representing the rest of the people on this planet...:D

Interesting part is how you seem to think that the market is as big as the total number of humans on the planet. I can see all the 1 month old toddlers in the world crawling to a store now...

Good point, but it is still "drop-in-the-ocean" anyway I look at it.

You don't even need to read those old comments. Just look at the stock price.

AAPL dipped below $200/share just after the initial iPad announcement in January. Today, it closed at almost $289.

I'm expecting some pretty quarterly numbers come October 18th.

:) :p :D

I've been saying this since February: We are in the early stages of the tablet revolution.

Mainframes
Minis
PCs
Tablets

This will be the decade of the tablet. By 2020, the majority of computer users will have tablets. People who never bought a PC will have a tablet. The market for the iPad is far bigger than many of us here are realizing, and now the media is beginning to catch on. Just beginning.

Saturation point? Ha! Just watch.

Well we haven't hit tipping point yet we still need to see how this fits in business. Look at the three segments above from the perspective of a business
Mainframes brought a computer to the company
Minis to the departments
PC's to the Staff and the same time the family.
Tablets have worked in one way as everyone in the family wants a computer that is theirs. Just not sure how that fits business, but the question is does it really need to.

Maybe the effect on business will be reverse. We'll get to the pre-computer situation staff will bring their own trade tools businesses will provide specialist tools and consumables. I mean looking at a ten year time frame we could well see a tablet included in most workers trade kit. With all the computes IT infrastructure moving in to small hot noisy rooms.

Makes everyone more flexible and aligns better to those companies that have already have flexible team structures that the bulky PC's never suited and laptops have never had the battery to do the job.

I wonder what the sustained rate would be like? AFter the initial rush, I'm sure the iPad will reach a saturation point. Wonder what Apple plans for a release cycle? Refresh every year like the iPhone? Also, to keep people buying iPads, Apple will definitely need to keep adding/upgrading features.
It's not *all* about Apple adding bells and whistles... what matters more are the apps which get developed, and the "applications" users find with which to "apply" the iPad.

Exactly. Take education for example:

And there's a special "iPad in Business" page over at Apple too.

This ain't no short-lived fad over some useless gimmicky gizmo going on here.
This is the shizzle.
