Apple didn't overhype anything!! In fact, Apple didn't say anything about the tablet.

At the very beginning of the keynote, Steve Jobs said the device is "magic." Not "cool," or "slick," or "exceptionally well designed." Nope. "Magic." Right at the beginning. So, he did, in fact, raise expectations.

I'm still waiting for the rabbit.

re: Magic?

Well, given the fact that their latest mouse was even branded "magic" in its name ... I'm not sure you can read TOO much into this one? I haven't seen any rabbits popping out of their mice either.....

Oh, come on guys. You can't be cluttering up Apple's pristine user-interface with something as cluttered looking as your own face. Think about how unclean the iPad would look with people's faces sitting next to such pretty and well designed buttons.

Not everyone has an ugly face. I'm proud of mine

My guess is next version will have front (iSight) but no back camera. But I have also been hoping for iSight on iPhone for two years now. I don't see apple providing an accessory camera as it goes against the form factor/simplicity of the ipad. Kind of like a stylus.

There's Something In The Air...

I feel like there is a delay in the device for just that purpose - they intend to add features or function. This is clearly a prototype device. Any time a new product was released, the store went down so they could begin to push those puppies. Something is up. I think Apple isn't telling us everything they know. ;)

They probably will add a camera in a future revision,
but is adding a stupid little camera enough to convince people to buy a whole new iPad? Probably not.

I think that if they do add one, it will be something REALLY interesting, like a camera hidden behind a screen someone mentioned earlier. Now THAT would be something. It would even address most of the issues a bezel mounted camera would have. It would be hidden, so aesthetics wouldn't be an issue, and it would work well no matter you how held it.

It probably simply isn't ready yet, I haven't heard of any device that would use this sort of technology, and it probably is insanely difficult to construct one, but they filed a patent, so maybe they just might pull it off.

Agree on the plan pricing ....

Since I already have an iPhone with AT&T, I'd like to see some kind of discount for adding the iPad as a second device for data use only. Maybe something like $20 extra for unlimited data on it?

The lack of a front-facing camera bugs me too, but maybe not enough to skip buying the iPad over it? It depends... I just think they could do a lot of creative stuff if the camera was in there, like letting you wave your hands over the tablet to turn book pages, instead of having to actually touch the screen to do it.

No front facing iSight, and no family data deal from AT&T, no sale...

The camera part is cheap and they could always stipulate no video over 3G at this time, and why must the Wifi only users suffer?

Also until AT&T offers a combo data plan, no deal.

We already pay $60 for data (2 iPhones) and unless at&t says for ~$15 more we can tether the iPad, or reduce that $30 iPad data plan down for iPhone subs, no deal.

Sad really, a camera, and at&t bundling data usage fees, and I think this things would sell twice as fast.

I think it will still sell to major apple fans, but my money says 75% of the early adopters will wait for a camera, and it's the early adopter that drive v1 sales. (Ex we all paid $600 for the v1 iPhone)

Oh well, apple and at$t still have time to fix this... fingers crossed.

I think i'll email them feedback right now...

Cheers

Actually, for what it is, the Magic Mouse is a fantastic idea and well implemented. I love it. It is almost magic!

On possibility is that the lack of webcam on the iPad is largely due to bandwidth limitations for the 3G model. In other words, the idea is to keep the AT&T networks from melting. Obviously a camera isn't expensive nor does it take up much room, so I have a tough time imagining that's the limitation.

If you think that iPad will be available in US only, you wrong. Screw your poor AT&T with bandwidth limitation, it is not only one carrier available on the planet Earth. In EU we got enough speed to carry video calls without carriers complains.
No, lack of camera is not to protect your AT&T bandwidth structure.

I'm not interested in using the iPad as a camera. I can't imagine trying to hold it steady in one hand while using the other hand to click to focus and shoot. I've already got a "good enough" camera in my iPhone.

I agree with everyone who talked about apple not adding a camera because there is not supposed to be a wrong way to orient the ipad.

What I really want to do is hook up a camera via usb and have people write apps that allow me to fully control my dslr. Let me see the live preview on the gorgeous iPad screen. Have a histogram, full control of the camera. Touch to focus or set white balance.

Imagine all the cool iphone camera apps not using the dinky cameraphone lens and sensor, but with a full frame fast lens. That is my vision of photography with the iPad

+1:D and i probably know +19 more

Now the iPad is finally out, we'll get no-end of "Will it, won't it" feature rumors until they finally add them in the next revisions... the never ending cycle of Apple Hype and Hoopla....

Exactly. After yesterdays anti-climax I think it wise to lower rather than raise expectations.

But what about people who will be using it on wi-fi? That has no need for 3G and there is no reason a camera should not have been included. Apple spends all of this time, money, and research on a new product yet it lacks such a basic feature.

This is similar in my mind to the lack of cut-and-paste on the iPhone. It took 2 years for Apple to add such a mind bogglingly simple and basic function. Either it took them that long to figure it out or they just didn't think it was important. Apple has taken the weaknesses of netbooks and turned them into strengths, while also taking the strengths of netbooks and turning them into weaknesses (no camera, no USB ports, no multitasking OS).

Apple wouldn't have developed this product without a lot of expensive consumer research, focus groups, etc. I certainly the iPad meets with success.

I don't really buy that - they could surely have restricted it's use for streaming over 3G but allowed it over WiFi.

Not that I have great love for my carrier...

Angry. Much?

NO FIREWIRE?! :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
And this is... unexpected? They phased out Firewire from their iPod line ages ago. USB 3.0 is around the corner and Apple are likely to throw in the towel as far as Firewire is concerned. Yes, it's their baby, yes, it has advantages over USB, but this means nothing when Apple sees an opportunity to save 25 cents per manufactured laptop by ditching one port.

I could see them purposely leaving out the camera option in the keynote.

A) it's either not that impressive ie; 2 megapixels

B) they don't have it done yet and/or they are going to surprise us with 'oh yeah, by the way, we added a camera for your liking'.

Although who am I to call you wrong; I think the camera will be in iPad 2.0 (why else would you upgrade?)

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic

Are you suggesting that AT&T is telling Apple what to do? Great! So should I blame AT&T for not having a camera on the most anticipated device of the last decade? Who should I blame for the lack of multitasking? Bill Gates?

Just stumbled over this...

interesting, but still hoping for a camera when it comes out....

Will that work with an iPhone?

Forget the iPad device itself...

Just put an iPad software emulator running iPhone OS under Mac OS X on a Macbook Pro... and add a G3 chip with easily swappable SIM card (along with a wireless bluetooth headset) to the Macbook Pro. Then buy a contract-free data-only (no voice) $30/month unlimited data plan from AT&T (or T-Mobile or, with the right kind of G3 chip, Verizon).

This package enables you to make VOIP calls and surf the net anywhere anytime. When you travel outside the USA, just swap your SIM card and continue with another carrier. You can read newspapers, magazines and iBooks... make/get cheap phone calls (even have them transcribed using Google voice)... send/receive email... take/store/organize photos & music... watch movies & videos... all without being locked into a contract and without paying outrageous fees.

Right now the iPad hardware isn't powerful enough for me. I'll stick with a Macbook Pro and hope they add a good/flexible G3 chip to its features.

Off the camera topic for one question please. (yes I too want a front facing skype machine)

With the new Iwork will I be able to print? That would be fantastic. If not we all still need a 2nd computer.

Ok back to camera.
