The iPad has BT 2.1. Why does Apple not allow you to use your existing Apple BT keyboard or any other BT keybord? No, you have to buy a new one from them, that you can't even use in landscape mode.

Not really - that's like saying MBPs have Dual link DVI output - they don't unless you spend more on some spurious adaptor you have to carry around with you (and doesn't work properly either in that particular example).

Yes really. The guy said the iPad didn't have USB SUPPORT. Apple doesn't say that USB is included, they clearly say it is additional. That is still support.

NO FIREWIRE?! :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Jesus, not again.

Genius, you can. I hate people that don't read / listen. You can use your existing latest BT Keyboard with the iPad. Wow.

Silly me - you see where he said:

Problem is the ipad does not have a usb port!

I naturally assumed he meant it does not have a USB port, since that's what he actually said

I don't see integrating a camera into the iPad as very practical. Whichever side you put it on someone will want it on the other side.
The device is so small that it doesn't matter which side you put the camera on. It's one thing with a 27" iMac, the camera has to be centered on that one for obvious reasons, but on this thing they could just put the camera in any corner and tilt it a little toward the middle so that the user will be centered in the image no matter what the orientation is. You won't be holding it by the corners anyway.

They'll add a camera soon enough. This is one of those cases where apologists scramble to come up with technical reasons why it "couldn't" be done, only to find that Apple fixes it in the next generation. Anti-glare screens on MBP's was deemed "impossible" by pundits for various reasons like "it would obstruct the camera". Then came the MBP 17" with an anti-glare option, no problems there.

It's funny how people give Apple's engineer's zero credit sometimes... they can build the world's thinnest laptop or a laser-sculpted unibody case, but their brains explode when they try to figure out where to put a camera? Right.

Game. Set. Match. You win! :)

That is what happens when I read too quickly. My mind turned port into support. Oops.

So yes, obviously then no it does not have a port.

I wonder if there's a way to tether the iPhone to the iPad and use the iPhone camera... Probably have to jailbrake for that, but it's an obvious workaround.

There is no documentation on the Apple website that says you can use a BT keyboard. I see a dock, and a dock connected to a keyboard. Even though this has BT 2.1. it's still the iPhone OS running. We all know the iPhone has BT, but you can't attach a BT keyboard. Right? Why would they be selling a Dock, AND a Dock Keybord, if you could already use your BT keyboard?

The only reason not to include a forward facing camera would be to cripple the ability to overwhelm the network with videoconferencing. There are plenty of other ways to cripple it besides omitting the mandatory camera hardware.

Video conferencing could only be enabled on 3G with a highly crippled resolution so you can see who you are talking to but not who is in the picture on the wall behind them.

It could be limited to wifi only.

It could be limited to wifi and LTE only, since LTE will be deployed beginning next year (2011), presumably first in New York City and San Francisco where the networks are grossly overburdoned now.

In addition it could be a new animal called a mesh network with nodes "allowed" to be attached to broadband connections for public sharing, which is currently contrary to most broadband contracts. By doing that, a secondary network to 3G could co-exist in dense urban environments on wifi.

Devices with multi-homing such as iPhone and iPad could either selectively or concurrently use those networks.

The shift from voice to data only with VoIP will further free network bandwidth from continuous dedicated signals, to IP packets which allow multiplexing and substantially increase overall data send capacity.

It's time for networking schemes to become more prominent, more deployed, and more concurrent, as the build-out speed of 3G and 4G cannot keep up. It will not be able to keep up soon. We need urban concurrent networking.

Apple needs to sell 802.11 mesh network devices that have finely granular broadband attach nodes and which are licensed by ISP's to have allowed access to reduce pressure on wireless networks.

It will have the secondary benefit of a backup plan in an actual emergency in a region. The wireless networks are the first to crash or become overburdoned.

That might sell a few Airport Expresses. :) Buy AAPL. Run a wire up the wall above it to a picture frame, um, er, antenna.

Rocketman told you so. :D

Yes there is, although it is interesting to note that they only say "Apple Wireless Keyboard". This may just be an advert for their keyboard. I don't see why there would be a limitation.

The term "Apple Wireless Keyboard", can also imply to the one pictured that is attached to the dock and is therefore considered "wireless". If in fact you can use the wireless BT Apple keyboard why develop a dock with an attached keyboard? Why not just show the dock, with the Apple BT keyboard?
Does that not make sence?

Edit: Ok I just saw your attachment. Thanks. I just don't know why anyone would buy a dock with an attached keyboard if they can just use a BT keyboard.

For the swanky special iPad keys. :) Also, it does also act as a dock, and if you are going to keep it docked on your desk anyway, maybe might as well get the keyboard.

I am with you. I guess the reason is that the dock will only be $69 I think, while the price for a keyboard + stand alone dock would be comparatively expensive.

I guess if your vision is not to good and you have to be so close to the iPad. I think it would look better with just a dock, and a separate BT keyboard. Apple should have spent more time in putting in a camera in the iPad, than fusing two accessories into a useless one.

How many more times are you going to link to this?

1. This has been out for a while now.

2. Besides the fact that this has been available for quite some time, it is in way competition or replacement for an iPad. It costs a lot more and runs applications that are not designed for a touch interface.

I think he feels let down, like the rest of us. We were expecting a truely "revolutionary" new product. I have a feeling the iPad will join the ranks of Apple TV and the MacBook Air. To many people just consider it a big iPod touch. Also shipping is 2-3 months out, the longer the wait the more time people have to think, "do I really want/need this".

what's the point of iCal on an iPad if you can't dial the number from the device?

Edit: meant address book.

I assume you meant Address Book? I can't dial a number from Address Book directly on my iMac either, yet the app still seems to serve a perfectly legitimate purpose. ;)

And with VOIP-over-3G now allowable in the iPhone SDK, seems you could make a call from your iPad after all.

Hmm... well a modbook (http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook) has a built in camera, is pressure sensitive (wacom), and runs full blown Mac OS X.

Really tempting vs the iPad.

Hmmm. Not. Lets see, pay $699 to get a hacktab with no 3g (plus the cost of the macbook you are giving up). Or $1649 with their laptop included.

VS $499 + $120 for the 3g iPad ($619). Not too mention the STEAL on the data plans. For someone like me, who is on the big V, this is a LOT cheaper than adding a MiFi or wireless access plan. The MiFi has a 5gb (not unlimited BTW) plan for $60 a month. So, with a rebate the hardware runs about $100, plus I am sure they shackle you for two years. That is a total cost of $1540, plus I have to worry about data overages. The Ipad with data & hardware will run $1339 for two years (with NO contract). But, if I can squeak by with the 250mb plan I can reduce the 2 year price by $360. I dunno, it isn't perfect, but there ARE some killer features despite its limitations. Everyone likes to bash the Air as a failure (I have one), but for some folks it is perfect. I would buy one again. Like the Air, the Pad is not right for everyone. Adding 3g to a modbook is even more...

One more thing. How long before data plans start dropping for everyone? How long before other devices start getting 3g enabled as well? This indeed is a game changer, and time will bear this out. Apple has always been on the bleeding edge of change, for better or worse. Ditching the floppy, scsi, firewire, the disk drive (like in the Air). Sometimes you just have to jump off the cliff and take a chance (not like a lemming though, lol). I decided to buy my Air without the external disk, and see if I missed it. Did I? Nope...
Did I miss the floppy??

I think they also did a lot of thought on price points. $499 is half what a lot of folks thought it would be, and a lot cheaper than I would have guessed. $30 is probably what folks consider reasonable to pay for unlimited data (if asked).

Because there's a lot more to contacts than just phone numbers. That's why it's called, you know, address book, not phone book.

Wouldn't you rather pay $999 or more for a REAL tablet with OS X and many more features? I know I would. So, $499 for a Mega Ipod touch is just plain silly.
