And with VOIP-over-3G now allowable in the iPhone SDK, seems you could make a call from your iPad after all.

Just put a 3G chip in the 13" MBP and forget the iPad. With $30/month unlimited 3G data (no contract, no voice) you'd be able to surf the net and make VOIP calls from anywhere. No need to locate a WiFi connection.

Actually I think it´s for an accessory:
at www.apple.com/ipad

Connectivity
The 30-pin connector on the bottom of the iPad allows you to dock and charge it. It also lets you connect to iPad accessories like the Camera Connection Kit and the Keyboard Dock.

The camera connection kit just provides a way to upload you pictures from you digital camera, through an SD card, or directly with a USB cord. It is not actually a camera.

Sure, IF ATT offers that, and that is a BIG if. My bet is they don't, at least for awhile....

Lack of camera and video ichat on iPad is a seriously poor oversight.

Regrettably, this sort of confirms that the June iPhone update won't have a front facing camera or video iChat either because there is no way they're going to isolate the iPad even more.

Stupid thing is this is such a family 'home to home' type of feature that could have really launched some sales and ensured iPhone and iPad purchases went hand in hand.

Sometimes even Apple don't see the blatantly obvious!

Many said the same thing about the 1st Generation iPhone when it was unveiled. Everyone saw the hardware and then said ok so what.

Wasn't until 2nd generation and the App store that the potential was realized from non adopters and other cell phone companies. They have been playing catchup ever since. This is at least starting off base line where we are today with the iPod touch. Where the device goes and Apple's ultimate plan is YTBD. There's still another 60 days to see what comes of it.

So what you have a gazillion apps for the iPhone you still have no flash support, no multi-tasking, cheap camera with no built in flash, same boring UI. If you think the iPad will miraculously become an OS X tablet device, with 3G and everything else within 60 days, which is what it should have been, you have another huge disappointment coming your way. This is just a big iPod touch with 3G, lacking flash support, camera, multi-touch, and much much more.

Wouldn't you rather pay $999 or more for a REAL tablet with OS X and many more features? I know I would. So, $499 for a Mega Ipod touch is just plain silly.

No. Because it's going to be hot (likely), take time to boot/shutdown, etc.

Everything depends on what one needs. For 'me', I have an iMac to do intensive work like converting movies, etc. When I'm sitting outside having a drink - I want an iPad.

This isn't supposed to be in-lieu of a main computer.

My ONLY gripe is no iSight :(. Though I'd rather have that on my iPhone.
I guess I don't complain because I'm counting on jailbreaking

Up the nose camera

I think the reason there is not a camera is very simple. If you put a camera on your lap and take a picture of yourself with it, you look bad. It is a very bad angle for video conferencing.

You can already do this with iphone tethering, either via dock or through bluetooth. I've been doing it for a while, of course you either need 3.01 firmware, or jailbreak.

And if you take a picture of your baby but point the camera at your toes, that won't work either.

People can live with aiming the thing long enough to do the job.

It is not that aiming it is the problem, it is using it in a way that is comfortable and you still look reasonable is difficult. if you put it on your lap, the image of you looks really bad (up nostril shots, double-chins galore, weird unnatural perspective of the face, slight rocking movements of the ipad will cause the face to go in and out of the frame very easily). You could hold it in front of you , but that would get uncomfortable fast. You could put it on a table, but you would probably need a stand for the ipad to sit in and based on my experience with the macbook, that stand would have to be adjustable so it can be aimed at your face.

The bottom line is this would not be a good device for video conferencing. For that reason, I doubt you will ever see a camera in the ipad. Putting a camera in the device is a trivial thing, getting a good user experience would not be.

All your objections also apply to typing on the thing. Fact is, if people are going to type a lot they'll use a dock or a case that stands it up. If they are going to videoconference they'll do the same.

And, frankly, it's not that awkward. Hold a mirror in front of you, angled like you are reading a book, and look down at it. You look fine. Just like if you held a tablet with a camera on it.

And your excuse is ridiculous - which is the better videoconferencing "user experience" - no camera at all, or a camera that requires slight physical manipulation to get a decent shot?

just a thought

how many people complain about cameras in their phones because more and more businesses are not allowing said phones in the workplace to protect intellectual property?

now think of the business uses of this device. It did get demoed with iwork, not ilife. How would a camera in the ipad effect its adoption in portable note-taking/work environments?

That's if you want a videoconferencing experience AND if there's bandwidth.

Just read this on their FAQ's
Might be time to shoot them an email and see how that's coming.
Just got this back from BT-1

Hi Lamont:

Thanks for writing. We are receiving a lot of interest from our customers regarding these features. We are not sure what we are going
to be able to do with the iPad as we cannot get our hands on one yet, but as soon as we can we will be looking into it!

Kind regards,
Midori

Ambient Light Sensor

A few points, first the device is not out yet, and has not been torn apart. Weren't there a few recent patents that hid a camera behind the LCD screen allowing for a more natural chat? Also, I thought there were two cutouts in the thick plastic cover from the leaked pics (see attached). One for the home button, and one for??

The ambient light sensor.

Personally I think Apple purposely left off the camera. With all the complaining that there isn't one, Apple will come back last minute add the camera and then say we listened to you and added the camera. That way they regain people by making them feel involved with the process. I think it's all planned personally. We'll see.

I wish you were right. An ipad with a webcam would be a good travel companion.

Actually, if you read closely, this accessory will be for importing photos not taking them.
