I assume you meant Address Book? I can't dial a number from Address Book directly on my iMac either, yet the app still seems to serve a perfectly legitimate purpose. ;)

And with VOIP-over-3G now allowable in the iPhone SDK, seems you could make a call from your iPad after all.

I did mean address book. You have a good point but I'm still having issues in trying to come to a clear realization for why I might buy one.

It does everything my iPhone does but it doesn't make phone calls. So if I buy one I still have to carry around my iPhone + the iPad. The issue I have their is they do the same things for the most part.

It almost makes as much sense as driving both my cars to work every day.

and about the Voice over IP . Let's not jump ahead of ourselves, this product was just announced a little of 24 hours ago. There's still a lot of IFS and many months before the iPad may be remotely possible of making calls.

IF Apple really did agree with a few VOIP software entities to begin developing for this.
IF AT&T is going to be ok with it afterwards (even though they made a public statement giving it a thumbs up, what one says vs what one does .... )

even then , i have my doubts that Apple will allow any company ie, skype be able to make their App interface directly from the Address book to initiate a phone call through a 3rd party app.

Because there's a lot more to contacts than just phone numbers. That's why it's called, you know, address book, not phone book.

I kind of want to add more to what i posted above, but I think my post above covers your response as well.

On possibility is that the lack of webcam on the iPad is largely due to bandwidth limitations for the 3G model. In other words, the idea is to keep the AT&T networks from melting. Obviously a camera isn't expensive nor does it take up much room, so I have a tough time imagining that's the limitation.

apple could limit video chat or video skype to wifi. that would protect 3G from too much data and still allow the iPad user to have video chat and video skype and augmented reality apps and all that.

.................................................... Also shipping is 2-3 months out, the longer the wait the more time people have to think, "do I really want/need this".

that is a very good point. i only can imagine that apple had all this content negotiations and contracts with publishers and ATT so they knew the secret can not be kept for long. so they decided to announce it, give developers 3 month to make apps. and they simply have to take the risk that the hype dies down a bit.

maybe we get a nice surprise when the final release day comes. in order to generate new hype they say: oh, btw we included a webcam, a sd card slot and an optional stylus and a mini usb port. we also offer a 128GB/G3 version for $959. no matte screen though.

I always thought that Apple would eventually add a camera to the iPad.
It's a no brainer. But I thought that it would be in the 2nd gen one.
However, it does seem pretty realistic that Apple might just add one before shipping.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
And I think that this is good. Apple can really see what people want in it now, so even if they don't add it, it should be the first thing on the next gen.

I doubt that will happen. Wishful thinking though. Most of the press I read is trashing the iPad. It does not look good for Apple. It's not a good way to launch a new "revolutionary" product. You know what they say, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression".

on multi-tasking...

Everyone (the pundits) are saying there is no multi-tasking (Gizmodo says "Want to tweet while you browse the web? Listen to music while writing a memo with the iPad? Sorry. The iPad just can't multitask, even if you can.").
On my iPod Touch I can listen to music while surfing the web, checking my email, etc. Why would this not be the same on the Pad?

Gizmodo is wrong, at least about the music part, assuming you don't use pandora or something for your music.

Multi-tasking has existed for a long while now. From Cydia apps.
I wouldn't buy an iPad if it couldn't be modded like that.

That's probably the only thing you can do is listen to music and do one other thing at the same time.

Wouldn't you rather pay $999 or more for a REAL tablet with OS X and many more features? I know I would. So, $499 for a Mega Ipod touch is just plain silly.

No, not without the 3g. I am on Verizon, and have no smartphone. My Touch has wifi and all my emails, but without wifi access I can't check email or surf, etc. If you have an iPhone this probably makes less sense, but I don't, and am TIED to Verizon (kids, family plan, etc...). I have looked at the 2 carrier solution, the 3g card, the MiFi, etc. This is a better solution (for me). Furthermore I think this is the perfect device for my folks, who are older, and less tech savvy. This may not be the tool for the average uber-geek.

Also, I am wondering if Flash will be coming (although I have my doubts).
When SJ went to the NY Times he got the plug-in missing warning, which seems like an uncharacteristic mistake for them to make.

If it did have 3G, and be a REAL tablet. Why would you settle for a iPod touch XL?

Because it is the only game in town right now. Undecided whether I will bite on the 1.0 version. Waiting to see the final features when it ships. But on price it is mostly worth the tradeoffs. A front facing camera would make it a smash though.

YES! Haha. The names change, but the level of idiocy remains.

Hahahahahahaha! That's an awesome example of typical Apple users. They haven't even used the device yet and they already hate it.

What if it turns out to be a lot nicer than it looks? Seeing it probably isn't enough... gotta hold one and use it first to get a real opinion.

Some of the posts on this forum make me wonder about the saniety of people. But really camera or no camera this device is awesome I love my iPhone it's awesome, if I can have that same expreince on a larger screen and put my textbooks on it, well I'm sold

I wonder if there's a way to tether the iPhone to the iPad and use the iPhone camera... Probably have to jailbrake for that, but it's an obvious workaround.

getamac tech support ad

i'm trying to find the getamac tech support ad where PC gets a strap-on webcam... did apple delete it and forget all about it?

I'm not buying into the iPad concept until it has a webcam.

Many said the same thing about the 1st Generation iPhone when it was unveiled. Everyone saw the hardware and then said ok so what.

Wasn't until 2nd generation and the App store that the potential was realized from non adopters and other cell phone companies. They have been playing catchup ever since. This is at least starting off base line where we are today with the iPod touch. Where the device goes and Apple's ultimate plan is YTBD. There's still another 60 days to see what comes of it.

+1. There is going to be major jailbreakage. This thing is too much like a computer for people to be satisfied with a walled garden, even if they'll accept it for the iPhone.

By the same token, this image below implies the iPad can make phone calls...

It almost certainly can't, but the code for it exists in the OS, because the OS was probably forked from the iPhone. I'm willing to bet the same is true of this camera that won't exist
