I feel bad about your cracked screen but I also agree with these comments. I've had my ipad 2 for two months now and I use the smart cover to view in landscape mode just about everyday for lunch and dinner. It has never tipped over.

I had time to cool down, and I'm much less upset today. I agree that the landscape position is safe. I used it like that quite a bit as a lunch/dinner TV as well.

The vertical position always looked unsafe and it was never advertised. So yeah, my fault.

Yeh sure, box is a bit dirty, also I've never seen a genuine Apple Smart Cover so I don't know how it compares. Seems to look and work the same what I've seen on vids, quality looks good as well.

Hi mate, does this have the rubber all along the hinge like the official covers?
Also, how long did it take to arrive in the UK and did you pay for quicker shipping?

Hi, There are grey pads on the 2 hinges, and grey material all the way down the long part of the hinge, doesn't look like rubber to me looks like grey Teflon plastic?

i payed for the delivery by DH i think, took about 3 days, I've purchased from them before using slow mail, it took 2 or 3 weeks.

I applied "skins" to my black leather smart cover a few days ago which I ordered from eBay. The one's I chose are called Anthracite Brushed Silver but they also sell Carbon Fiber and many other designs.

I ordered them from here.

Sorry the photos are so big, I couldn't figure out how to post thumbnails.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. It does look great. I totally agree that the patina looks sharp. Really gives a high tech, slick device a touch of organic, human earthiness.

Random question -- after you applied the leather conditioner did your cover get a bit of a "waxy" feel on the outside. I posted about my cover getting a bit of a moist, tacky, waxy feel that stayed for the few days following and I was forced to let it dry off of my device. I am wondering if it's because if used maybe WAY too much conditioner..? Or maybe too many coats? A few commenters thought it wasn't a big deal and just recommended letting it dry. I also wonder if this is why my cover was maybe so, so, so dark.

Anyhow, after 4 days it's still didn't feel quite right I read about "removing" oil from leather using talcum power or cornstarch. I used talcum powder. It lightened color to a warm, saddle brown (lighter than yours) and removed the waxiness and I am quite happy.

Dd the treatment change the texture/feel of your leather..? I recall me original tan cover having a slightly suede-like feel... A most like fabric. Now it is still soft (and very thin feeling) but definitely has a bit more of a smooth, leather feeling.

How about yours?

Hey man,
How's the color of your leather now?
Might turned out a bit too dark. I think I put too much conditioner. So I just added talcum powder and will leave overnight to see the results. It has been 24 hours since I applied the conditioner and it stills feels a bit yet.

did you put an weight on top of the talcum to help absorbing or just left it alone?

No matter what the new treated leather looks very nice on dark brown.
Thanks

A ended up doing 2-3 talcum treatments. You will DEFINITELY notice it lighter after the first treatment. It was still a little dar for me so I did another treatment and then a final third and was left with a more maple color than the dark walnut brown it started as after my initial treatment.

It has lightened even further in the past few months and I'm considering doing another single VERY LIGHT coat of the condition probably followed by another treatment of the talcum powder - potentially experimenting with leaving a few scattered spots with more or less talc to give it an even less even colored look. That's one thing I am not super happy with the patina over time -- I really wished it looked more worn... But I suppose it's not quite like a boot or a saddle or a jacket and has a more dynamic range of stretches and wear..

As for putting weight on it -- nope. I just spooned talcum over the ENTIRE cover so it literally just looked like a very short rectangular pile of talcum powder was on my desk. Lift, transport and dispose of carefully as that stuff kinda likes to get everywhere.

I would also suggest tapping and shaking the cover to get it off rather than trying to wipe it off. For me the bottom layer of talcum absorbed a lot of the oil and would kind of crack off the case pretty easily (good thing) but I made the mistake of trying to wipe some off and it kinda smeared this soapy scum on the cover like I ran a bar of soap across it. It was easy enough to scrap off but would have been better to avoid all together.

How did it turn out? Success with lightening? Just one round with the talcum..?

thanks for the reply.
I did it overnight with the powder and I did not see much difference. What I notice with use some of the oil goes away showing a bit of the Tan original shades. So I assume with constant use it might start to fade and look more like a worned leather piece that is something that could look cool.
Also on the Obenauf website they say to wait for at least one week to see the final results. This is just day 2.5 for me.
What the powder did was take away that wet oil feeling that I still had after one full day of the application. I was using paper towel to dry and I could see oil on the paper.
No matter what I like the darker look much better than the original tan. With at some point if there is a combination of the two I think it will look great.
Anyway, I will keep you posted. Take care

Yeah... I think I noticed more of a chance with the single treatment of the talcum but I was really looking for something lighter so I did another treatment or two.

Like you the initial treatment got rid of that gross, oily wet feeling that my cover had after the initial oil treatment. I guess the leather of the cover is quite thin and had read that if there is even a tiny slight bit of excess oil used it will just sit in the oil like water in a sponge so the talcum helped with that. I still had a lingering bit of slickness after the first talcum treatment but after the third time it was back to very much feeling like the original velvety smooth texture.

I will also as that my cover had definitely lightened a bit in the past few months. So much so that I am thinking about smother (very light) treatment of oil. So if you were hoping for something lighter and don't want the the trouble of ruining it through the talcum process a few more times like it did I think time will lighten it...

Good luck... I totally agree that the cover looks better even when it's "too dark" or darker than w would have liked... Te original color was too monotonous and cardboard looking for my taste.

I am LOVING the Oil stained Tan covers everyone has been posting! I just wonder one thing.

Has ANYONE ever tinkered with the idea of taping the edges of the Tan cover to make sure they dont get damaged and then trying to artificially stress the leathers using dropping or running abrasive objects like keys, nails, etc on it, cleaning it and THEN oiling your cover?

I'm thinking of wanting a warm, warn tan look. I definatly like more of a light to medium look to leather.

Thanks! :)

That sounds like it would look awesome! I would love to see that.

I just order my Obenauf's leather oil to try the darkening trick with my tan smart cove.! I was pumped to find out they ship to Canada too!

Does anyone have on of the listed ipads and smart cover and could take some photo's so i could have a look and decide.
Thanks

1. Black iPad Gray Cover
2. Black ipad Red Cover
3. Black iPad Black Cover

Thanks again

I just posted mine. Dark grey SC on the black iPad.

Since Apple released the 2nd generation of Smart Covers awhile ago, has the colour of the green polyurethane changed? Has it gotten lighter? Because the one posted on here is a little bright and I was wondering if it was the real colour? If it has changed since then, could someone please post a picture of:
the newer green Smart Cover with a white ipad?
the newer blue polyurethane with a white iPad?

It would be a TON of help (torn on deciding to get green or blue)!!! Thanks!

Hmm, thought I posted in this thread but didn't see it. I was inspired by some of the folks in this thread that oiled up their smart covers so I picked up a tan leather smart cover and some mink oil. Here's the result:

That looks awesome! The one I treated with Obenauf's came out quite a bit darker, almost chocolate. I like it a lot, still a million times better than color on the Apple Tan smart cover.
