I am an extremely picky Type A person....I have had my iPad up and running for maybe 3 days...I would love to it in perfect -- and I do mean perfect -- condition but have come to the conclusion that this is an impossible dream...the reason being the finger prints, the constant touching of the screen, etc. make this impossible in the same way that it is impossible to do so for a phone (short of using an Otter cover which makes it bigger than a laptop)...

if you are concerned about fingerprints on the screen, consider getting a screen protector.

Smart Cover Dyed Dark Brown

Thanks to this thread, I was able to do this.

1. New iPad 3 tan leather smart cover.
2. FIEBING'S Leather Dye (brought at a local shoe repair cobbler, 4oz for $5.69)
3. Lint free cloth.
4. Painters tape.
5. Rubbing alcohol.
6. Tape off back and all the metal (I would use good painters tape, that does not bleed through)
7. Clean with rubbing alcohol to take the shine off with a lint free cloth and let dry.
8. Shake dye and apply with applicator, so that the whole cover is wet.
9. When dry, buff with lint free cloth and re apply, until desired color is achieved.

I did not color the back (suede side) because the cobbler told me to us a suede dye, which he did not have. He said that the suede would get matted with the leather dye. Dark brown leather dye is all he had, but for me I think that a burgundy dye would have been a better match to my Zagg alligator skin.

Dirty Black Leather Smart Cover, used angles from one of the first threads point of view. Yea I know, my desk is really dirty. Horrible lighting in the room didn't help either.

I'm a bit disappointed in their pink. When it first came out online, I thought it would be a lighter and brighter pink, instead it's closer to dusty pink. Bought it and exchanged it for the green because it's brighter and looks nicer with my white iPad. But now that it's been over a year, I think I need a new one because my green one is getting really dirty.

Do the current incarnations of the Smart Covers still gunk up the screen/leave oily resude

Remember reading reviews of the smart covers and it was a problem, but dont know if it was for the Previous generation for the iPad2, or the redone version with the diffrent magnets.

Would like to get a thin case/cover as my Targus Slim is starting to fall apart. But dont want to gunk up the screen

Windex the MF interior down occasionally and they never gunk up the screen.

A friend of mine gave me a Red cover, it had a few spots on it (and she went to something more protective) so I decided to experiment.

I bought a bottle of this stuff, in the light brown shade taped off the metal and went to town with it...

I had layed the cover inside of a cardboard box, as I was applying the dye the bottle slipped out of my hand - luckily, into the box, but unluckily all over and it got on the back of the cover too so I had to do that side as well. I would have liked to keep the inside red, but oh, well..

I would have liked a lighter color but I think withteh base being red thats not really possible. I am very pleased with it, and luckily since hte whole bottle didn't pour out I can do it again, Ive been looking on ebay or the marketplace for a cheap tan or cream cover to give it another shot..

Anyway - here are the results...

Hmmm I'm thinking I can do this with my new iPhone beige leather case. Think it'll work?

Think i prefer the Tan, that looks like mission brown to me.
