Hmm, thought I posted in this thread but didn't see it. I was inspired by some of the folks in this thread that oiled up their smart covers so I picked up a tan leather smart cover and some mink oil. Here's the result:

that looks really good! could you describe the whole process in more details, anything to look out for?

Thanks, it was really easy. I went to a cobbler and picked up a can of spray mink oil made by 'Moneysworth & Best' for about 6 bucks. I put on about 6 coats over 4 days or so to make sure the cover had time to dry in between. Each application made the cover a bit darker. I didn't apply it heavily, but made sure to apply it as evenly as I could. It's pretty foolproof I think. I figured using a spray vs a cloth to apply it would yield better results.

The cover is in no way greasy or anything, which I'm really happy about.

The 8oz Obenauf's oil is out of stock. The 4oz heavy duty is also sold out. I bought the 8oz heavy duty instead.

They allow backordering but you have to order a minimum quantity of 2.

no because then it would be a folio, not a smartcover...

No, just a different type of smart cover, would still use the magnets etc.

I'd ideally like a rigid smart cover type cover for the front as the folds are of no use to me.

Worth asking.

I don't think the Obenauf heavy duty leather oil (solid) works very well. I bought the 8oz from cabelas and it kind of leaves a waxy texture.

I put on 3 coats and it only darkened the tan cover by 2 or 3 shades. It still looks tan.

I put some on my wife's black leather cover and it also leaves a waxy texture behind. It attracts a lot of dust.

I'm going to order the regular Obenauf leather oil (liquid).

My iPad Smart Cover (Distressed)

If you like to do one like this for your own,... here are the steps taken to achieve the desired distressed look:

• Start out with the original Apple Tan Smart Cover

• Wash very briefly with some Glycerine Saddle Soap and let dry

• Apply a couple of soft strokes with a very, very fine sandpaper to roughen up the leather just a tad.

• Use 2 (thin) layers of Fiebing's 100% Neatsfoot Oil (let it dry and soak up completely before the second layer)

• Rub down with a cotton cloth

• Enjoy

Does anyone else find that it doesn't always hold the iPad up when in landscape position?

Seems sometimes it's okay then other times the iPad tips backwards.

I feel like there's a knack to it, which is annoying and causing the WAF to fall quickly.

A friend of mine gave me a Red cover, it had a few spots on it (and she went to something more protective) so I decided to experiment.

I bought a bottle of this stuff, in the light brown shade taped off the metal and went to town with it...

I had layed the cover inside of a cardboard box, as I was applying the dye the bottle slipped out of my hand - luckily, into the box, but unluckily all over and it got on the back of the cover too so I had to do that side as well. I would have liked to keep the inside red, but oh, well..

I would have liked a lighter color but I think withteh base being red thats not really possible. I am very pleased with it, and luckily since hte whole bottle didn't pour out I can do it again, Ive been looking on ebay or the marketplace for a cheap tan or cream cover to give it another shot..

Anyway - here are the results...

Didn't have any oil. So I went down a different avenue and sanded down the smart cover an applied some waterproofing beeswax. Was trying to achieve a rustic, used, vintage look. What do you guys think.

Prob will get some Fiebing's 100% Neatsfoot Oil and apply that. But can't get it anywhere.

Based in south UK. I just scrolled up and mine looks rubbish.

the guy above sanded it too but his looks way better. tbh i sanded it to remove the coating and smooth finish, to bring up the raw leather and give it some character. its not a pair of shoes so doubt it will make much different to wear

My dye came through.

Had so sane back the chocolate brown to get my desired result and well happy. Any feedback would be great. Good or bad

I'm enjoying my smart cover.

However, I still like to take it out of the cover sometimes and when I want to do a hard dock for whatever reason.

To the point, it fits so tight!

Is there any risk of scratching up the metal back of the iPad when you're popping it in and out of this cover?

Has anyone seen any damage yet?

Thanks!

I am an extremely picky Type A person....I have had my iPad up and running for maybe 3 days...I would love to it in perfect -- and I do mean perfect -- condition but have come to the conclusion that this is an impossible dream...the reason being the finger prints, the constant touching of the screen, etc. make this impossible in the same way that it is impossible to do so for a phone (short of using an Otter cover which makes it bigger than a laptop)...

I wish things were different but they are not...

I think you are talking about the smart case this thread is about the smart cover. That said, that was one of the reasons I returned my smart case. It's surprisingly tough to get the iPad in and out of yet the iPad (at least mine) is loose once in it.
