Research firm comScore today announced the results of its latest study of digital media consumption in the United States, perhaps unsurprisingly finding that the iPad has continued to dominate the tablet industry and has even quickly overcome the iPhone's headstart to lead it in total traffic. Among iOS devices, the iPad is now responsible for more U.S. Internet traffic than the iPhone, taking the title by a margin of 46.8% to 42.6%.

Perhaps most notably, the iPad continues to dominate the U.S. tablet industry even as numerous high-profile competitors have introduced (and in some cases already discontinued) their own tablet products to take on the iPad. According to comScore, the iPad accounted for 97.2% of U.S. Internet traffic, as measured by browser-basd page views, from tablet devices over the June-August period.

Looking at the broader tablet and smartphone market, iOS as a whole represented 43.1% of the installed user base for connected devices in the United States over the study period, with Android placing second at 34.1%. But in looking at traffic from those devices as a gauge for how much they are being used, iOS takes a commanding 58.5% of the market while Android dips to 31.9%.

Apple fans have frequently pointed to the company's strong performance with the iPad and iPod touch as data that should be included when comparing the relative adoption of iOS versus Android. And given that Android has yet to take off in the tablet and non-phone connected device markets, iOS continues to hold a sizable lead in overall platform comparisons despite Android's rapid ascent in the smartphone portion of the market.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/9A334)

Wow, more than the iPhone!?!

The remaining 2.8% of tablet traffic is people visiting Apple.com on their Xoom to order an iPad.

Most android tablets have an option to set it for desktop mode so it reports as Chrome - FYI. Either way, impressive.

RIM at the bottom? Not surprising, used a BlackBerry to surf the web last week, and I wanted to die/ kill it with fire.

So they are measuring internet traffic by "browser based page views"? It would seem that this misses the much heavier data usage of streaming audio and video. What am I missing?

iPhone screen being just 3.5"

it is not surprising that people are switching to iPads for web browsing.

Why does iPad get 97% of tablet market when measured this way when (as I think I read recently, but could be wrong) iPad has approx 75% of tablet market as measured by sales?

Because the iPad is so much better than other tablets that iPad owners tend to use them a lot. 25% of tablet owners may have something else, but it sits around collecting dust because it's such a piece of junk.

75% (whatever the actual percentage is i don't recall) is for tablets "shipped" so this 97% number is a confirmation that all of this competitors tablets are actually sitting on the shelves.

Not to mention I tend to use an app for online content/data access on a phone (because of the display size) and find myself using the browser more on a tablet.

Nice that they emphasize the fact that many manufacturers have tried to release a similar device and some have already been discontinued. Even better, every time one of these devices is released it gets labeled as the "iPad Killer" when in reality it just gets killed by the iPad.

97%. Wow. Sure supports all the reports that others ship lots of tablets but they don't sell through to consumers.

97%, holy ****. Well, so much for all those Honeycomb tablets.

As someone else said, it's not a tablet market, it's an iPad market.

Many of the 3rd party browsers on iPad also have that option. I doubt there's a very significant number of people on either platform who changes the agent value.

I bought an Android tablet about a year before I bought an iPad. I used the Android tab a couple of times in that year. I use the iPad almost daily. I suspect it is a similar fate for many of the Android tablets.

I bought the iPad for one task - simply to use it as a digital portfolio of photos. It has become so much more for me.

So what we can take from this is... iPad users are traffic hogs :D

That's really impressive, though. 97% is insane.

Does this prove that iOS users actually buy their devices to use and understand what features they offer vs. a regular smartphone that people buy that happens to run Android? I wish there was a way to compare the direct challenger(s) on Android as a whole to the iPhone and leave out all those crappy prepaid and low end Android phones. I think that would be a better metric as far as adoption rate between the two.

Just a thought.

Android is on many low end phones that aren't exactly smartphones which may account for its lower share of internet traffic.

Just to play on this point a bit more, I use my iPhone WAY more to stream audio and video than my iPad, but I use my iPad to browse more because of screen size. The stats are misleading when compared to the iPhone, but probably valid when comparing to other tablets.

Analyst says that Apple have 60% market share.

The problem is that Android OEM/Google talks about shipped products and activations. Apple talk about sales.

http://daringfireball.net/2011/07/ipad_dominance

The strange thing is that just 0.9% of Android devices that visit Android market are tablets. That would mean about 1.35 million Android tablets sold. Apple have with Q4 sold about 40 million iPads. So 97% is more accurate then 60% market share.

There is only 3 reasons to buy another tablet then iPad.
1) All pirate stores that let you install all apps for free on Android. (black market app)
2) Its not Apple
3) Panic sales like the HP tablets and Kindle fire that is sold at a loss.
