1) All pirate stores that let you install all apps for free on Android. (black market app)
2) Its not Apple
3) Panic sales like the HP tablets and Kindle fire that is sold at a loss.

What tablet apps does Android have... pirated or otherwise?

I've never heard anyone say "I'm gonna buy this Android tablet to use ____ app"
 
Does this prove that iOS users actually buy their devices to use and understand what features they offer vs. a regular smartphone that people buy that happens to run Android? I wish there was a way to compare the direct challenger(s) on Android as a whole to the iPhone and leave out all those crappy prepaid and low end Android phones. I think that would be a better metric as far as adoption rate between the two.

Just a thought.

I wish Google and its Android vendors would talk about sales instead of activations and shipped products.
Who cares if they ship 5 million tablets that nobody buys.
Or activations, that is done every time you reset the phone, upgrade the OS and return you phone. 10-30% of Googles activations is the same product that is activated again and again and again.

I have tried to find out numbers for the best selling Android phones. Cant find it. Just market share.

The only number I could find was Samsung that was honest and said that they had sold 3 million Galaxy II phones. iPhone 4S will probably beat that the first week if Apple can ship as many as people wants. 1 million pre orders in US alone the first 24 hours.

Nice that they emphasize the fact that many manufacturers have tried to release a similar device and some have already been discontinued. Even better, every time one of these devices is released it gets labeled as the "iPad Killer" when in reality it just gets killed by the iPad.

But they have Adobe flash!

All consumers want Adobe flash. Rip Iphone/Ipad :rolleyes:

Sales measures 1 quarter. This will be effected by an install base over 18 months for the iPad, but a few months for competitors.

Most of the sales of other tablets were fire-sales, by people who barely wanted them. e.g., I picked up an HP touchpad for development (before HP completely beheaded it) and now it is just gathering dust. Far less easy to use, and far slower than the iPad 1.

I hear it all the time from Android users.

"Buy Android and use the black market app and get all apps free"

A lot of the other tablet market devices are sold but sit on the shelves of the stores that bought them. My local Best Buy has the iPad out on display and the others in a cabinet under the LED displays... I asked you have people buying any of those, she said no they pretty much just sit there.
 
Android is on many low end phones that aren't exactly smartphones which may account for its lower share of internet traffic.

I would not be surprised if Google started to manipulate this data. Just emulate android HTML tag on 1% of their server farm and Google can announce that Android have 90% of mobile internet traffic.

Then they will announce that they have activated 250 million devices and that Android tablets will surpass iPad in 2012. "50 billion Android tablets where shipped. We now have a 99% market share" Googles share rise. AAPL continues to lower and lower valuation. (P/E12 with 80 billion in cash + average growth of 63% last 5 years)

Indeed. There will be a total of around 45-50M iPads sold through the last quarter. Reports will be announced in a week. I think there are somewhere between 3x and 4x many iPhones as iPads.

It's doubly noteworthy because iPhone users use the web much more than any other smartphone users.

The problem is that Android OEM/Google talks about shipped products and activations. Apple talk about sales.

The strange thing is that just 0.9% of Android devices that visit Android market are tablets. That would mean about 1.35 million Android tablets sold. Apple have with Q4 sold about 40 million iPads. So 97% is more accurate then 60% market share.

I wouldn't classify the Kindle Fire as a panic sale. I expect it will sell quite nicely although it is a different class of device.
 
Wow, that's nuts....I expected Android to have at least 10% to 20% of the tablet market, who knew they were selling so poorly.


But in all honesty, I would think with the million touchpads and 100,000s of PlayBooks and Android Honeycomb devices, I have to question these numbers.
 
The most surprising number to me is the 5% of the traffic captured by the RIMM Playbook. I would have expected that number to be much lower, at 1% or less. I don't know of anyone that owns a playbook, have never seen one in "use in the wild", and have never heard of anyone talk about their Playbook.

Meanwhile, I see iPads everywhere, mostly in use by children 10 years old or younger. In all likelihood those children also have (or will eventually have) an iPod Touch. I can't imagine a significant % of those future consumers "switching" to an Android device when they are ready to get a smartphone.

RIM only captured 5% with ALL of their devices. The Playbook doesn't have 5% on its own.

Indeed. Kindle Fire is basically a store front for Amazon, not really hardware margin producer, just like how Google is giving away Android software to keep mining data from users searching Google.

It's a mystery. Nobody seems to know exactly how well these Android tablets are selling after the sell through and return rates have been applied.
 
So they are measuring internet traffic by "browser based page views"? It would seem that this misses the much heavier data usage of streaming audio and video. What am I missing?

You’re missing what they are measuring: people browsing the web, not data burden on the network.
 
Frankly, I don't expect the Amazon Fire to generate that much web traffic when it ships either. I don't think that will be what their customers will be using it for, just as I don't think they'll be a big app platform either.

We'll see.

The remaining 2.8% of tablet traffic is people visiting Apple.com on their Xoom to order an iPad.

Same here, and that's exactly why they made the iPad. I remember Steve Jobs saying at the keynote that they would only release it if there was a need for something between the Mac/PC and the iPhone.

Same here. I rarely use my expensive-ass Windows 7 laptop now that I have my iPad 2. I just never really need it.

iPad has 75% of the market measured by "channel sales". It is probably even higher measured by end-user sales (though slightly down due to the HP TouchPad fire sale). It is funny because the tablet space is almost an exact inverse of the PC space. Apple represents only 23% of computer sales (yes much higher than the 5% number you often here quoted by some folks). So about 1 in 4 computers sold is a Mac, but 3 in 4 tablets sold is an iPad. Apple is eating away at PC sales from both ends now. Personally, I think Apple has a lot of room to grow financially providing they don't screw things up or get complacent. If they keep pushing forward they have the potential to make 10 times the revenue they do today in the smartphone, computer, and fast-growing tablet markets. No other company is better positioned to dominate in those areas.

If you use that metric, then iPads are outselling iPhones, which must be sitting on shelves unbought. However, we know that to be very untrue, and that there are many more iPhones than iPads.

Web page views are not a good indicator of sales.

Not saying they will. It's just hard for me to see how a leader and visionary of his caliber can ever be replaced.
 
Gotta love how the Android fanatics crow about their smartphone market share while refusing to include the iPad and iPod Touch (i.e. the total iOS platform) in their numbers.

Didn't we just read somewhere that Android tablets had 30% of the tablet market? I guess none of those folks are actually browsing the Web. :rolleyes:
