$349 = major fail... the whole point about it is a low price

I must have missed something during the last five years, because I have never seen Apple selling a product at a comparably low price to compete with other products. To expect that Apple is going to release a product with a low price is outright ridiculous, in my opinion. If Apple decides to introduce an iPad Mini, then for the simple reason that there is demand and potential for it. There is no evidence that suggests Apple would be compelled to reduce prices to stay competitive, the latest figures seem to prove otherwise. Since the price range of the latest iPod Touch is $299 and higher, I'm not convinced that an iPad Mini would be cheaper than that. $349 is a reasonable price, but it could easily be higher.

The whole point of Apple products has NEVER been low price. They will not market anything as "this is our product for cheapskates." It will be marketed as advantageous to those who want iPad quality with the convenience of a smaller form factor, or something like that. There will be corny commercials, probably with sugary pop-music. Millions of people will buy one.

Said it many times, but will say it again.. considering the price of the ipod touch lineup, why do people keep assuming this will be sub $300? Also, how is $349 not reasonable if that is the price?

How's that work out for you when you're in a car? Try using GPS. Oh, you can't because the wi-fi iPads don't have GPS!:)

Use our iPads in the car all the time for turn-by-turn directions, looking up restaurants, attractions, etc.

I've never used an iOS device as a GPS in the car. It's too annoying to see that while driving. I have a Garmin GPS. Even if you could have an iPhone 4S with iOS 6 doing the turn-by-turn in the car, most people bought separate GPSs before Apple Maps came out and still have them.

eveyone knows i ment 7.85 inches. i couldn't be bothered typing it all out. i was layzing away in bed. The catagory is 7" tablet devices. It's all the same. don't need to get all technical on me like that. :D

But 7.85" rounds to 8", not 7". The iPad mini will be 40% bigger in screen area than the Nexus7 tablets.

Would a Wi-Fi only iPad Mini be completely ridiculous? Yes, of course.

Would Apple actually release a Wi-Fi only iPad Mini? Yes, of course.

Apple is king when it comes to getting customers to buy products following their refresh cycle. Releasing a Wi-Fi version now and then later releasing a 3G/4G version later would follow Apple's business model.

The question is how long will they be able to stick to this business model.

Very soon the smartphone and the tablet markets will be mature, just like the PC market.
That is to say that the features of the devices already sold will be sufficient for most users not to need to replace their device for years:

- on the one hand, for a company like Apple, the less features they give, the more people will buy another of their products to compensate for the flaws of the one they previously bought (planned obsolescence)
- on the other hand, if they're too cheap, people will just buy the Samsung/Asus/whatever tablet or phone that will have all the features to last for years.

Apple is now reaching the bearable limit (compared to competition, their products are almost obsolete at the date of release), and I'm not sure their top management has the ability to react.

Or the increased sales have been going to other corporations or organizations. Keep in mind the number of business that are now supplying iPads to their agents as both work and field "digital-clip boards" in-place of laptops. Any iPads that are going to be purely internal won't need 3G/4G and will use the buildings WiFi. Schools are a very good and easy example of this kind of model, but it works for business as well.

Example, look that McDonalds in Virginia, mounting iPads onto tables. That's an increase in shipment without a corresponding increase in actual personal ownership.

Excellent observation. ;)

It doesnt say wifi + uk lte, it was pretty clear at launch that 4g would only work in the states.

That's going to be a tough one to figure out.

Well no announcement today, so maybe it's all just rumor afterall?

iPad Mini has been the longest running rumor I can think of in the Mac community. It emerged on scene as soon as the iPad was announced.

... and here we are.

Remember the rumor from Feb-Mar which was started by some analyst/ball gazer from the WSJ (if I remember correctly); he claimed he saw the NEXT iPad which would be released in September. That "actual" device was going to be the ultimate everything-killer and had an amazing leap in function, etc etc etc blah blah. "THE ONE TO HAVE!" and so forth. ... it's October 11th. Nothing. Not even a rumor.

Someone should pin those predictions to a wall so everyone can be reminded of how much future-feces is inherent in all analyst/prediction articles.
