Re. swtiching to a fall release pattern for iPads... I'm not so sure.

Wouldn't that leave them a bit bare for new releases for the rest of the year? iPads, iPhones, iPods and new iPad minis all within three months? Doesn't seem like a smart move to me... of course I've been wrong before.

I don't need 4G on the iPad Mini, but I do need at least 3G. No 3G means no GPS and compass which means de facto no maps. It also means unreliable iClouud access, and obviously, unreliable web browsing and email.

Bam, the 3 things I really wanted from this device.

And, Bam, the 3 things you'll find in an iPhone. Think they may produce products that entice you to buy the more expensive ones by limiting the features in the lower priced ones?

Poor experiance.

Apple will be aggressive on price gonna be interesting how much , but if it's anything like the the iPhone 5 launch it's not going o be very exiting buy your device from the apple store go next door for a case, "any adaptors?" "none in stock" "when are you getting some in?" "don't know".

The Guardian don't know anything IMO. They don't have Apple sources so I wouldn't take this to be gospel.

I think most ppl understand how gps works its just in most cases for tablets the mapping is updated by data connection and all the maps are not stored on the device like on a stand alonegps unit so therefore so wifi only wouldnt include gps

looks like apple need to copy google and allow downloading maps for offline use.

nexus 7 is wifi only but has gps.

Way to dump on everyone in the UK that just bought a new iPad, buying in to all of that "spectrum is fragmented, won't be available for a few years yet" jargon.

Thanks, Apple!

Yes, same for us in Australia. If they do put a global LTE chip in 'The New iPad' I will be pissed, as i only got my iPad a few months ago. Wouldn't be very happy at all.

But what can you do, technology evolves too quickly these days for some things.

7" would be a perfect size for my truck. I could see building a full stereo / nav system around this if it is real. 4G would be a benefit, especially if the GPS chip is not available in a WIFI only model.

Yes GPS is a separate device/chip/whatever, my Garmin GPS doesn't have 3G but finds satellites just fine.

3G and GPS are separate things, but they are not necessarily on separate chips/devices.

In recent iOS devices, GPS (and GLONASS) support is provided by the baseband chip (e.g. Qualcomm MDM96xx on the iPad 3 and iPhone 5). This is why the WiFi-only variants do not have GPS.

This is bad news for consumers desperate to take on another data plan with a mobile carrier. I already have contracts for my iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2 and iPad 3, and I couldn't live without a new mobile contract for my iPad Junior.

Please Apple DO NOT RELEASE iPad Junior UNTIL you have unlocked the technology to integrate mobile data into these phenomenal devices.

Ipad mini was designed to go after market share of the Kindle Fire at the same price point, with virtually the same feature set, but much better platform and marketplace. You people that want to keep stacking features on to an entry level device have no clue why it was created in the first place. You want 4G in a Kindle Fire, then you'll pay $499. Now we're in the price point neighborhood of the larger iPad. I'd say Apple has got it covered pretty well for the holidays. That is of course if they can keep up with demand.

I can't see the point in upgrading the uk model only, especially when the ipad 4 is o ly a few months away.

Thank you! Remember the iPad 2 HD rumors that surfaced in October of last year? Everyone swore that Apple will create an HD version of the iPad October and then release the new iPad 3 March, and we all know how that worked out.

New iPads and an iPad Mini just before Christmas could be good for Apple.

I agree! I can see Apple moving to an iOS update during fall and Mac update during Spring type of deal. iOS devices are cheaper and more "giftable" items than Macs - hench the pre-holiday release. :)

why does it cost SO MUCH to integrate mobile tech into these devices?

You can buy a complete dumb phone (which has all the tech) inside it for like £30 dollars brand new, the whole phone. not just the chipset.

This is crazy! Apple is supposed to stop innovating because previous customers won't have the latest and greatest features? Good Grief!

That is also an example of how statistics can be deceiving. These numbers also include Nook and Kindle (e-ink ereaders that are not true tablets). You have to look at more than just a percentage. You have to consider the actual unit sales per year as well as which devices are included in the survey/report.

Either way, tablet sales are increasing overall as well as the number of iPads being sold per year.

I always felt that sticking to one upgrade each year like clockwork was more of a liability, because it makes you predictable to your competitors. Not to mention that new tech and features you want to implement today, may not be as ground-breaking a few months down the road. Apple now has the resources to release the "true ipad3", I say they do it.

For instance, having an iphone and ipad share the same connector means you only need to bring one lightning-to-vga adaptor (if it ever comes out) and one charging cable. I shouldn't have to wait 6 more months for this.

The ipad3 was a solid piece of technology, but marred by a few flaws. Doing a minor refresh now would allow Apple to update its tablet line and keep it fresh and relevant, let them get away with introducing just a minor refresh (I am predicting a thinner and clearer screen, improved ability to handle retina graphics, faster charging time, true 4G, faster processor) as well as 'buy' Apple one more year to think of how to better refresh their ipad4.
