Hi Guys,

I have an iPad 3 and I feel it is time to upgrade my iPad to the Next iPad Model that comes out. Having said that my iPad need is very limited I don't like day in and out use it, yet I feel an upgrade would be nice... So my question to you guys is, If somebody is not in a dire need to upgrade the iPad to the latest model but still wants to upgrade the iPad should he upgrade now I mean later this month when the iPad Air-3 is announced with Pencil Support or Next Year when even the 3D Touch is incorporated in the iPad. Ideally I would have liked to upgrade only when both the things, Pencil Support and 3D Touch have been included in the iPad. And actually speaking I May not need both these things, But I might also need it based on the theory, who doesn't like newest technology innovations. So If I am on a brink to upgrade or not ? should I upgrade this year, or whenever both the things are included in it, but that who knows could be when ?

What could you do without ? What do you need more ? Pencil Support ? or 3D Touch ?

Please advice people !

Hard to say of the iPad will ever get 3D Touch. The regular 4.7" iPhone 6s I believe uses something like 96 sensors to detect the pressure (they measures the distance of the light coming from the backlight to the back of the display and detect the miniscule changes.)

A 9.7" or even the 12.9" would take a huge increase in the amount of sensors required.

Then there is the matter of the Taptic Engine that gives you haptic feedback when you Peek and Pop and do other 3D Touch functions. iPads have never had any kind of vibration motor for feedback (neither the old motor or the new Taptic Engine.) iPads are large enough that just using one probably wouldn't suffice (especially not in the 12.9") they would have to either make one large enough you would actually feel it, or add in 2-3. Both methods would require new space to be made to fit it/them.

All of that can be overcome with time and probably will be. But when is the big question. Currently, it's probably not cheap to implement it at such a large scale (9.7" and 12.9") right now.

It's comes down to of you want upgrade what they release later this month and enjoying the massive upgrade over the old iPad 3 and use the Pencil. Or wait another whole year for a very big "maybe" on 3D Touch in 2017.

if you have an ipad 3, either get the 9.7" ipad pro when it releases, or the 'old' ipad air 2 which will then be more affordable. Both will be huge improvements over your current ipad which was IMO a bad one by Apple - adding retina display without the guts to push it.

Sp 2017 we are looking at

So 2017 we are looking at a 3D Touch is it ?
[doublepost=1457088247][/doublepost]But what are the chances of Apple adding Pencil Support to this one ? Do you guys really see this happening into reality this year ?

But my friend if I go by what you are saying, I don't need an iPad Upgrade in the first place !! :) with a person who uses his iPad so limited !! Why put in money on a investment that is used sporadically !

At the earliest I would say 2017 for 3D Touch on an iPad. The Air 3 (or rumoured to be iPad Pro 9.7") I'm pretty sure will be the only iPad updated this year. Going by the last year or two, it seems they are doing a two year refresh cycle for iPad models. Mini and 12.9" Pro came out last year.

The one coming out this month should have Pencil support. It's been rumoured to include everything the 12.9 Pro got last fall, just in the smaller 9.7" size.

Just wait the two and a half weeks for the announcement and see if it's something that is worth upgrading to. Personally I would if my iPad was the old iPad 3. But ultimately that is your own decision.

That's a good advice, but if I buy the iPad Air 3 right now with Pencil Support I will be left with the regret that I took the plunge without waiting for the 3D Touch to arrive on the iPad which could have made me have both ! Especially when I didn't needed it very urgently !! like right here !! right now !!

What do you use it for? Honestly I'd consider an upgrade to the ipad air 2 even if it was just used for safari browsing and watching videos.

The laminated screen is fantastic, the increased ram makes safari tab refreshing much less of an issue, the side by side can be handy to pop open a facebook messenger window and chat while you're browsing, the picture in picture is great to watch a video while browsing.

All that is a worthwhile update even for only light use. All in my humble opinion of course

With the March event coming around the corner, why not wait and see what Apple does for the iPad Air, which is rumored to be updated. Then make an informed decision.

If you don't use your iPad a lot, why are you so desperate for 3D touch, it doesn't make any sense?

I am sorry Laminated Screen ? What did you mean ?

Yeah I mean ! That would be the ultimate truth ! The Moment ! But the point is making up my mind ready with what I need versus what makes sense !!

To have the latest and everything !

Of course but with the event just a few weeks away, just don't press the buy button until after the event ;)

To have the latest and everything !

If you have to have the latest and everything, then why do you still use an old iPad 3?

Also, how does no 3D Touch make it not the latest? Regardless of 3D Touch or no 3D Touch, it'll be still the latest because it's will be the newest 9.7" iPad released, with all new specs and features.

I'd wait till the March event! Who knows whats around the corner. The worst that could happen is nothing, the best is that there will be an improved 9.7 inch iPad and the possibility of an Air 2 price drop.

I don't know if you'll see 3D touch though... *Possibly* 3D touch will come to the Air 3 (assuming Apple sells both a 9.7 inch Air and 9.7 inch Pro) and Pro 2 in September, while the 9.7 inch pro will wait till march next year.

For the sake of getting the longest out of tech. Same reason I'm waiting around for a new iPad with significant improvements before I give up my iPad 2, I'm in for the long game.

It removes/reduces the air gap between the glass on the front of the screen, and the actual screen.

The result is that the web page/content looks like it is floating on the top of the iPad. It's something I couldn't be without now

Yes. I get that. But the OP was asked why did he "need" 3D Touch so badly.

He been told lots to wait for the event on the 21st. To see what comes (even though it's practically confirmed it's a 9.7" identical version of the 12.9" Pro and dropping the Air tag and will also carry the Pro tag.) He wants the latest, it will be the latest regardless of it having 3D Touch or not.

Oh No...No...Don't worry I am not buying anything as yet, definitely waiting for what is being announced this month ! But some point of time will have to decide right ? So gearing up for that moment !

When I say I wanna have the latest I mean latest that is going to come out for atleast 2-3 years safeguarding myself against future technology innovations ! So by having Pencil Support and 3D Touch I would have covered the Max Apple has to offer in terms of innovations atleast for 2-3 years.

This is what even I am planning and hoping to do ! Exactly the same thing !

Based on what you posted, it appears that you've already made up your mind to upgrade and it wasn't a matter of IF you should upgrade but WHEN.

@mrklaw gave you solid advice. I don't see anything in his response that would convince you to not upgrade. Both the iPad Air 2 and the (currently mythical) iPad Pro 9.7 will be great improvements over what you currently have.

... or perhaps you are having second thoughts about upgrading (independent of what @mrklaw posted) o_O

Yes but it still will not have both (Pencil & 3D Touch) at the same time in the current iteration, which would have really urged me to go for the upgrade !!

even without 3D Touch you'll be getting some huge improvements vs your current iPad. If you wait until 2017, then you'll have missed a year of enjoying those features, and still no promise of 3D touch - it may never come to iPad.

I don't see the value in holding off for something that may never come, and missing out on real benefits now

With the 3D Touch already a existing technological invention by Apple which is fully functional on the iPhone 6s and Plus, it is just a matter of time before Apple brings it on to the iPad everything that comes on iPhone comes on to the iPad and vice-a-versa. So it is just a Matter of time when even 3D Touch comes to the iPad !!
[doublepost=1457120374][/doublepost]Also guys please understand this, I don't upgrade my devices and gadgets every year with what comes out. So if I buy this iPad Air-3 I wanna make sure that it is future proof technology wise that is it has taken care of all the major technology inventions available at that point of time. In this case we are talking about the Pencil and 3D Touch ! I trying to look forward to use this iPad which I will take for another 2-3 years atleast ! Hence need a cover for my investment !

everything that comes on iPhone comes on to the iPad

Not everything. As already mentioned, the iPhone has had a vibrator since the beginning, or close to it, but the iPad never got it.

As for 3D Touch, I think it'd be difficult to incorporate it into a large screen like 9.7 and 12. I'm thinking what's more likely is that the functions of 3D Touch will be incorporated somehow into the Pencil.

If you are fine with staying with the iPad 3 for another year, then go ahead and wait.

If 3D Touch is that important to you then wait until it comes out. But you could be waiting awhile because who knows if and when the iPad will get 3D Touch. 3D Touch may never come to the iPad or it might be a couple years. If it was me and what I am going to do is wait until the new iPad Air/Pro 3 is released and get it and be happy with the upgrade. Then if and when 3D Touch comes to the next iPad and you have to have it I would sell the iPad Air/Pro 3 and upgrade to the new iPad and be happy with my new iPad

I kinda wish they'd do it and get it over with, TBH.

on the one hand, i understand the concern that apple would add functionality only accessible by 3d touch, in the similar way that they seem to only be able to add an orange filter "night mode" to 64 bit devices, even though flux demonstrates that any device is easily able to handle such an operation.

(i know people will say its a question of devoting the programming resources to older hardware implementations, but the same problem could easily be applied to an upcoming iteration of iOS. just a purely fictional example with a heavily requested feature: they introduce a more robust file management system for iOS, but for whatever reason only make it only accessible via a force touch implementation.)

on the flip side, its really hard to advise on purchase decisions when they aren't based on any current need, and only on the speculative value of a given feature. iOS 10 is going to be introduced this summer; the march iPad will represent the latest hardware going into that introduction. which means you likely won't be missing out on any fundamental functionality in that release. its also a truism that when the following iPad hardware comes out in the fall or next sprint, it will have things that the existing versions lack. even if you got 3d touch this round, there'd be something else the next round that you'll have to live without.

so basically, if you really crave 3d touch, wait it out. if you see the value of whats currently (or imminently) offered, you can make a purchase sooner.
