How are you getting screwed over? I just bought a 2 knowing full well a new one will be out soon, but I want an iPad now. In 3 months if the 3 is worth it Ive got 2 options, sell it for 3 quarters of what I paid and put £100 towards an upgrade or give this one to my mum and buy the 3. If the 3 isn't worth the upgrade I'll get my mum a 2 for less than they cost now. If you can afford to throw away $500 on a toy I'd expect you can afford the extra to upgrade if you insist on having the most recent tech

How are you getting screwed over?
Because you just spent $499 on a gadget that can't even play flash. Knowing that apple just announced another ipad that will come out in few months, then you've basically been screwed over. You better have a good relationship with an apple store manager or you are not returning your device for full money back.

What, you think people have a luxury to spend extra quarter for a god damn device, even if it's a remaining half price after trading in the device? Seriously, THINK before you talk, please. THINK.

So your logic is basically, anyone who can afford $3,000 worth HDTV, then that person have commodity to buy another $3,000 when the new version of HDTV come out in few months, despite what kind of salary that person is getting. Maybe that person saved his money after many years to buy that TV.

Not many people doesn't have 500 bucks laying around just to upgrade the device in few months after buying one for same price. Not in this economy. Maybe you don't get outside very much to find out out what is actually going on with the economy.

Deal with it.

If I get ipad 2 now for $499.99, and in February apple announces ipad 3, then I've been literally screwed over. Most of people who bought the device now would feel they've been screwed over. It's as simple as that. Any person with basic human instinct and emotion would feel cheated when they realize they just spent $500, then finds out new updated version is coming out soon with very same price. Don't try to debate this.

Not everyone is a god damn apple sheep thinking every yearly apple upgrade is worth their money.

You're deluded. I'll email apple and tell them to discontinue the ipad after you buy one so they don't hurt your feelings.

I believe that for many people, the ipad represents a significant monetary investment which easily equals 1/2 to 1/3 their monthly salary (assuming you go for the 64gb 3g version). So it is only natural that we need to think long and hard before committing so much money to it. Nor may everyone be comfortable with selling/trading online, or willing to go through the hassle. This isn't some cheap $10 casing that we can just throw away if we feel it doesn't suit us.

For me, I will just wait. :)

I understand this, but by buying a product nearing the end of its cycle while being fully aware of this fact, how are you being screwed when apple bring out a new product that you were expecting to be released? That's my point.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I would wait. You're probably 2 to 3 months from an iPad 3. Don't pay $499 or more for an iPad 2 right now. I would NOT be surprised if Apple said iPad 3 (16GB Wifi) now starts at $399. I am hoping it drops $100.

On the remote chance they do drop $100 off the price it won't be on the 3, they may retain the iPad 2 16gb wifi with a reduced price. The iPad 3 could cost more and they'd still sell out

There's a chance that it could happen. Tablet prices will eventually drop, just like 32" flat screen tv's have been for the past few years. If Apple makes the entry level iPad 3 ($399), it will be even harder for competition to compete. If Apple doesn't drop the price, then competition will and will start eating away at the iPad sales (for ex. Kindle Fire). Of course we don't see the effect now, but the over time, we will.

I really can't see the price dropping lower than it is, an improved spec will justify the cost and make it better than the competition.
There will always be cheaper options but they won't be the premium product the iPad always will be

I think there will be a price drop on the iPad 3. If they don't want to come out with a smaller/cheaper (preferably 7") tablet, then they should just drop the starting price of the iPad 3. But, in a couple of months, we will find out.

Apple never really does price drops all that often for upgraded hardware. There may be some small drop, but really all I see happening is releasing an upgraded iPad and drop the iPad 2 to more of an entry level price. I could see a comparison as to that of the MacBook Pro and MacBook. Similar designs, somewhat, similar functions, but upgrade hardware=upgraded price.
The thing with apple is it all just works. Thus, the price of an IPad has not changed people wanting to buy one. I don't see Apple changing this strategy anytime soon. Then again, we are living in a post-Jobs era. Anything can happen.

I'd be very happy if it was simply a new screen and more ram with reduced iPad 2's around release because then I won't want to upgrade and can get my mum an iPad 2 cheap, she's not fussed about retina displays either lol

And you are ignorant. While you are at it, email ask them why their garbage product cant even play flash.

I pay good $499 for a tablet that can't even do what android tablets are capable of.

How am I the ignorant one? I'm the one with my eyes wide open, when the iPad 3 comes out you won't find me cursing apple for "screwing me"
Also you mention flash a lot, not once in iPod, iPhone or iPad ownership has this ever been an issue, nor will it be in future now adobe have ceased development of flash. Doubt it will be an issue for you either, I can't see you ever buying an iPad due to the fear that apple will screw you over by releasing another one and making you feel inferior to the rest of the world.

Reading comprehension anyone? Who said I will be cursing when ipad 3 comes out?

I hate arguing with illiterate people on internet.

The iPad 3 should come out around late February or March, and I think it'll be well worth the wait. If you wait you're either going to purchase the new and much better iPad 3, or you're going to buy the iPad 2 for less.

It's very difficult to guess the cost because of the retina display. Without it costs should remain the same but with it, it's hard to say. What I hope for is this:

  • iPad 3 16GB $499, 32GB $599, 64GB $699
  • 1.4GHz quad-core Cortex A15 processor
  • 9.7 inch 2048x1536 IPS display
  • PowerVR SGX 600 series graphics
  • 1GB LPDDR2 RAM
  • Lighter, better battery life
  • Higher resolution cameras
That would be truly beast.

Anyone wanna venture a guess as to How Much a new ipad3 will cost?

The same as current models. Slight chance that the price could go down a bit. I don't expect the price to ever go up, because that's the best advantage the iPad has over the competition so far. Apple will leave out features and/or settle for lesser specs before they raise the price.

Here's the question: can you wait a month to see if they announce it? If they do and say they'll drop the price of the 2, then you can save say...$1 a day for waiting if you want to buy the two? That way, Apple will be helping you, right?

In all honesty, Apple can do what they want. You need to know that new products come out all the time and there is always the potential for a new product. If you wait for the 'next big thing', you'll always be waiting. Once the 3 is announced with its specs, they'll already be talking about what needs to be in the 4.
