Does anyone know if one can use the webcam built into the Studio Display if one connects an M1/2 iPad to that monitor? Normally, iPad doesn’t work with external webcams but I was wondering whether this might be an exception

10 years later and they still can’t figure out window management on iPad… or Mac… the clunky iPad window management, virtual desktops, expose, dock, stage manager, clunky multiple monitor support… Apple is lucky their next best competitors are Microsoft and Google… both even more clueless when it comes to good UI.

I’m so glad to hear Apple is finally bringing external display support back to iOS 16. I’m re-enrolling my iPad in the public beta so that I have early access to the one feature I was most looking forward to with iOS 16.

Since Apple only wants iOS and iPadOS to support touch input, does Stage Manager support external touchscreens connected to iPad?

I was wondering the same thing, as well as how the studio display’s built in speakers work when connected to an iPad. I’m also wondering if the VESA studio display supports portrait orientation when connected to an iPad.

Kind of obscure questions, and I don’t think I’d ever use them myself, but I’m curious!

On that tiny screen? No. Not a chance. Yes, even iPad mini screen is tiny for window management that stage manager offer.
I think the desired feature is more like: connecting the iPhone/iPad Mini to a larger screen and get stage manager..

But if current implementation is anything to go by, I dont believe apple wants to create DeX like device with that experience. Plus, Idk if running an iPadOS underneath that wont be used by 90% of people is a good use of the hardware power.

I meant the ability to use this mode on an external display. Turning your phone/iPad into a desktop experience like Samsung Dex. The smaller the device, the greater the utility of such a feature.

But running an iPadOS underneath doesn’t make much sense for majority of people. And iPhone apps wont display well on landscape screen either.

Why did they need to remove the external display support from the version of Stage Manager for iPads that supported the feature just to put out a version of Stage Manager that otherwise worked on older iPad Pros? It's not like Apple doesn't put out individual IPSWs for each model of iPad anyway! It's why I don't see cellular options on my Wi-Fi-only iPads. Why they couldn't just release the respective versions of iPadOS 16.1 with the respective features turned on is beyond me. Unless they simply couldn't meet their already extended deadline to get iPadOS 16.x out there. But that goes back to Apple needing to go back to releasing products when they're ready and not on a strict annual schedule.

Here's a review/video using a 44" ultra-wide. This video is a couple months old, but I think it at least starts to answer your question.
Thanks, I did find that in my initial search, but it was on a older Beta. Imagine new videos will come out in the next few days, ill keep a watch on YouTube.

Will be travelling for the next couple of weeks, but when back home I think ill go for the M2 Pro 11, give it a good shakedown with StageManager on my 49 wide and use the 14 day return if it's not up to scratch.

Can anybody confirm if the iPad Air M1 will work with the full external display support? I assume so since it's M1?

Anybody know if the iPad screen can be turned off when the external display is being used?

Anybody know if the external display can also provide power (USB-C PD) to the iPad while using Stage Manager on the external display?

I stand behind my first comment about the “Stage Manager”. The feature still does not appeal to me and I have lost interest. I don’t plan on using it. However, I’m glad Apple is trying to make it better for those that will be using them. Sorry for the confusion.
Yeah, I am with you on Stage Manager. I have an 11” M1 Pro, and while interesting in some ways, it is mostly useless for me on that small screen. I do sometimes have Mail and Messages in split screen, but that could be accomplished without Stage Manager.

It's crazy Apple still keeps the "M1-only" thing for external display support. My iPad Pro 2020 handles 1080p@60fps external output just fine, even running 2 4K videos from youtube. Why not enable it and keep the up to 6K option for M1 and beyond?
