Dumb feature. All they need is to give iPad a desktop MacOS experience which they can already do on a 12.9" and certainly an 11" iPad Pro (they did sell an 11" MacBook Air some 10 years ago). They're just stubborn and won't admit that bringing MacOS to the iPad is worth it but they don't want to cannibalize their laptop sales. By keeping iPad a separate segment - they get double the sales.

It's also why the 13"MacBook Pro with Touch Bar still exists even though nobody really wants it. Apple has a tendency of not admitting when things are wrong or unpopular. Like how they forced to bring back MagSafe or change to scissor switches on keyboards over their flawed Butterfly keys.
Except that they see the iOS/iPadOS model as the future. Those operating systems are more secure, and at least for now, Apple controls which apps are available for them. Long term, they do see mobile devices, including the iPad, as most people’s “computers.” macOS would not work well on an iPad. It isn’t touch-oriented, and neither are macOS apps. It would be like Windows 8. Even now on Windows 11 Microsoft is still working out inconsistencies and quirks.

If there was more involved in the iPad update that I could actually make use of, I would consider an upgrade. However, Stage Manager in and of itself is not enough for me to say goodbye to my 11" iPad Pro. It is good to see Apple finally offering a feature that many can and need to make use of on a daily basis.

And you believe that?
Pfff!!!
M1 is obviously more powerful, but I'm pretty sure most iPad would handle Stage Manager well enough. Perhaps they could have limited the apps one can keep open on non-M1 iPads, but they chose to ditch them entirely instead.

I believe if Apple really wanted to sell more iPads, they would simply drop more of the older iPads from support in iPadOS 16.

Apple plans these things out years ahead. They just dream up features and say, oh well, our less than 2 year old devices are not gonna support it. Its just MBA’s at Apple maximizing profits to make shareholders happy. Apple does realize its reaching a zenith with its product line and I am personally worried what more they can do beyond feature bloat. Sure, its a lot of great feature bloat, but the level of complexity is starting affect the overall quality of the user experience.
Then why would Apple support 5 years of iPads? If it’s maximizing profits, drop support after 3 years for iPadOS 16 like what Android is doing. Your assertion doesn’t line up.

So much for being environmentally friendly with planed obsolescence. There is no reason that only brand new devices can do this

I get that, but as far as I'm concerned, that's a dirty trick.

These devices can already do multitasking, all they did was change the ui
They multitask with 2 pinned apps, not switching back and forth between multiple apps. The UI is how they control which apps retain their states and which apps reload when the user switches to them. This breaks that model, so switching to an app to have it reload would make it unusable.

The longer a user stays current with iOS, the longer that user pays for services and apps.

For just a few apps I would be fine, Apple could limit the apps based on ram just like running tabs in safari or available apps running in non-pro apps in iOS.

But having an extended screen on iPad mini would be nice. Oh well.

One of the reasons I upgraded to the 2021 Pro is because apps and Safari tabs on my 2017 Pro (A10X/4GB) would often reload (or go on reload loop then error out) while in split view. I’d have to hard reset to get things working properly again. Iirc, after upgrading to iOS 13, I hard reset that iPad sometimes 1-2x a day.

1 year of additional apps/services isn't going to make the difference, especially when apps/services don't require the latest iOS.

chopping off 4 year old users brings a huge wave of profits. much more so than a user lingering around for 1 more year on the old devices.

It's nice to see people think we users can be "chopped off". Very eye-opening.
