A terrible season for ipad owners so far. Being afraid of what a new update might bring - or remove, is a serious breach of trust.
Bring, remove, or break.

With Apple, I am done updating until the system is fully tested and polished by the n.7 update.

I’m sorry, but Apple needs to put more attention and care to their software.

Omg is the new Preview app annoying.
I used to use it to read PDFs but Apple has now, in all its wisdom, decided that I can no longer make a single page of a PDF fill the screen and have it a single-page-display as I can on the desktop.

Also, why on earth do I have to see the Preview launch panel (you know the one that shows a giant loupe and the last opened files and the dialog of “new file” and “scan file”) each time I open a file?

This is the worst downgrade ever. Its like swapping from Mac to windows its that bad.

You broke my iPad, Apple.
Yup i edit some of my college work on preview. It sucks so much battery and the hand written text can get super glitchy. It was one of my most anticipated app to be good at launch. Unfortunately not.

I will add the extra issue that the close button in many apps is a black X in a gray background, MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE. That's a huge design flaw.
Can you point out where the ‘black X on a grey background’ appears. For me most if not all of the time I see a white X on a grey backround or a white X on a black background.

yeah… chemical battery aging… urban myth 🤣😂
Outdated software is nonsensical, if anything, it has the opposite effect: it preserves battery life.

Battery degrades, but it is irrelevant if the device isn’t updated.

The battery health craze needs to stop, it is far more irrelevant than most think, especially on iPads. People use decade-old iPads with no issue. Or more. Many report iPads 2 and 3 still have good battery life, due to their larger batteries.

Also, you can see the effect of updated software in this very thread.

This! (in bold above)

It's inexcusable for a company with their resources and pedigree to be releasing this level of half baked nonsense software.

If they need to get off the annual cycles, then do so!

Software is every bit as important (perhaps more-so) as the sexy beautiful amazing hardware and they pay so little care and attention to the software anymore.

Great software experiences need to be thought out, well developed, polished and considered. The way they've gone about this rushed Liquid Glass situation is exactly the opposite of what one would want.

It feels like the entire thing was about "marketing" and little else.

If I could revert every change in iPadOS 26, I would. Except for the new mouse pointer. Every other change in this operating system has made the iPad worse.
I hear you…my iPad gen 10 usb-c- which I only use for drawing about 7 hours a day-now jumps to another part of the canvas when I want to draw a line, wont type with a Logitech keyboard as well as other small problems I never experienced in pre-sept 2025.

My other  products are worse now since I did not purchase them this calendar year.

Tim will get another raise for these shenanigans….

I just come from trying an M5 iPad Pro with iPadOS 26. Has 26.1 been officially released? If not, I’ve been trying iPadOS 26.0.1…

It is a mess, indeed, even on the latest M5 iPad Pro. Just 10-15 minutes have been enough to realize that even in the latest hardware, the system is a mess, with windows disappearing and one final system respring (black screen with a white spinning wheel) as a final confirmation that even with 12GB of RAM, the system is struggling.

I am definitely staying on iPadOS 18.7 on my M2 iPad Pro for a long while.
Not yet. IPadOS 26.1 RC has released now for around a week. The full 26.1 release should come in around a week.

If you like using resizeable windows and want to use it as your primary device ( like me) you’ll really like this update.

If you use at as a secondary device and only use it for netflix and admin work then you’ll really hate this update.

Don’t generalize, i use my ipad as my primary device and i hate everything i’ve seen about ipados26. I have little patience for changing my routines so drastically and slowing me down to gain “freedom” i didn’t need (or dont consider as such) losing tools like slideover on the way.

Not sure why that would make me a netflix enjoyer.

Also don’t skip the fact i was also commenting based on the fact that there seem to be a lot of of bugs essentially making it a lottery updating right now. The breach of trust in updating a six month old device is what makes this a terrible season for me. I know ymmv. We can’t be writing footnotes and dissertations in every comment to account for the enjoyers, you are in a thread named as “ipados26 is a mess”.

In all fairness, the visualization of PDFs on the files app was already far from ideal. I don’t know if it’s even worse now on the Preview app but I’ve seen big PDFs collapse as soon as I enter on the search field to search one word. Or the Apple Pencil annotations going rogue or disappearing… on an iPad Pro with 16GB of RAM.

For all of this issues, I’m using a great app for PDF annotations called Noteful. It’s not subscription based, only a single 9,90€ purchase. It works quite great for PDF editing.

+1 I bought this, i freaking love it and it completely and instantly replaced goodnotes for me! Great recommendation and I am so hoping it won’t go down the subscription road in the future.

The Journal app is also a mess now. The handwriting causes so many performance issues it's shocking that anyone could sign off on it for a public release, plus a whole bunch of new bugs (including data loss where it occasionally just doesn't save your entry).

Ok, i take it on my part that I did generalise in the response.

Idk why you took it up as super negitive. Plus I wasn’t being overtly positive towards my own liking.

Yes Ik, but I also that if nobody who had a totally inverse opinion (like me) spoke on the fact that ipadOS 26 is good in some aspects then it will just become an echo chamber of ‘who can find the smallest bug so we can laugh at apple’. I’ve had my fair share of bugs that I’ve shared in this space and laughed at the smallest bug that apple has made. But we don’t need echo chambers. Just my opinion.

Handwriting is equally as bad in preview. For a long while, I couldn’t even erase a piece of highlighted text instead telling me to delete the whole page of handwritten notes instead.

i’ve been annoyed and tired by the latest conversations about these issues with people
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipados-26-is-an-absolute-mess.2462173/post-34259434

but you are right that we dont need echo chambers, it’s just that talking about this has felt over and over like we have to defend every sentence we write over nothing. We all want the same thing basically, cool devices, nice experiences with them as promised to us bug free and for our lives to be easier working with them.

Now, indeed why has handwriting caused these issues for so many years and why has it still not been fixed. I was itching to use my handwriting in journal since launch of the app for iphone. And for notes to behave after some paragraphs of handwriting. This is crazy to have been overlooked, right?

Which iPad do you have?

Which iPad do you have?
I have the air m2 13 inch now, bought it days before the m3 announcement, i was eager to buy an ipad mini next year too (but not so much now, if slideover remains in this state and ipados26 doesn’t get any better). Also scrapped my plans to get iphone 17 due to this situation. Previous to that some pros and some minis.

The page control reminds me of Windows 8. M$ tried to integrate Surface controls into PC’s without touch controls. They had to bring an update so you could disable all of this were not needed. Fortunately Apple has a similar control I talked about up thread.
