I need this for my iPod Touch! So many times I lie on my side and want the screen to stay vertical, but it goes horizontal anyway and it is annoying.

I get the phone into widescreen orientation and then hold the phone so that the home button is toward the sky and I can keep the widescreen view while lying on my side.

WHAT?!?! People prefer buttons? Blasphemy. We at Apple make mice that lose buttons each generation. You can have your screen lock button for now...

I am happy they decided to use the button for screen locking. But theoretically, couldn't it be used for both? I mean 1 quick tap for screen lock and a long tap for muting? Seems simple enough, especially since they're all gesture crazy.

See my previous post regarding the idiot who uses the sim card to mute the iPad.

:)

Mute button makes more sense on a phone. Not on the iPad.

If you think otherwise, you need your brains examined.

Hi,

I sent Steve Jobs an email about this needing to be a feature sometime ago. What struck me is he actually responded to me. I was shocked!

Now we need one of those "Hi! I'm a Mac, and the iPad was my idea" commercials.

All I can say is THANK THE LORD!!! iPhone drives me nuts when I barely wiggle around and the screen shoots into landscape from portrait vice versa.

1. Only works in some applications.
2. What if you're injured and have to lie on your other side? (or get acid reflux!)
(for instance, your side splits open from laughing at the "it's a self destruct button, etc..." jokes, or the folks who think double tapping or long-holding the lock switch would work.)

"Browse a section of the store that features apps designed specifically for iPad. You’ll find hundreds that make the most of its large display, responsive performance, and Multi-Touch interface."

.. ok .. weird additions to number 2.
Anywho .. landscape works both ways .. so you just turn around and rotate your phone 180 deg.

To the first point .. well not working is want we actually want right? so that shouldn't be a problem.

It is a stupid method .. but it is the only that works .. do it every night whe tugging the monsters in.

i would like a mute also

Yes, because in the 1.2 seconds it takes to silence the device by holding down the volume down button, the iPad will end!

edit: "The world," I meant "the world." "The world will end." the iPad is only means "the world" to Steve. <3

On another note .. I kind of keep thinking there has been an option in the settings menu where you could switch that auto-rotate off .. no, never jailbroke my phone .. must have been an earlier 2.x version .. or is my memory playing tricks on me again?

There are some apps that offer a no-rotation switch in their settings bundle.
Mine is one of them. BibleXpress.com Because some people like to read their Bibles in bed.

It's not touch sensitive. It is a physical toggle like on the iPhone. It's either in an off or on position.

Just another example of why physical buttons still have their place.

Any action that is either global or very common is justification for a real button. (Just like the current home, volume, ringer and power buttons.)

What I'd like is a Back button like almost every other device on the planet has. It's bad enough having to reach up on an iPhone/touch to go back a screen, and this is a much bigger screen.

Or at least a gesture area on either side of the screen that I can assign actions to.

That option is application specific.

For example - texting. You can stop it rotating by locking it into one orientation.

I think the iPhone is going to need one for task switching in OS4 - how are you supposed to switch apps if the one you are using is full-screen? Answer: A dedicated button.

Nice improvement!

I must say that the auto rotation is a little frustrating when I'm trying to use Safari in bed. I do like the addition of a screen position lock button. Now if only they could create a screen lock button combination for the iPhone / Touch. Maybe they could hold down the home button and either press up/down on the volume control.

Now do it! Make it happen! Ready GO!

I wish my iPod touch had one! It's really annoying if you're on the settee reading something then woops! It's turned :p
