can't wait until someone comes out with a similar sized competitor. iPad is great except the lack of flash - which they will never resolve because it will cannibalise iTunes media sales, and they do stupid stuff like this to it. Plus, the multitasking on my iPhone 3gs is pretty poor tbf....

As usual MacRumors will commit 1000s of pages of comments in wailing and gnashing of teeth about how terrible IO 4.2 update is, and 99% of actual users will happily update to it with no complaints. ;):apple:

Good for me.
I rarely use the orientation-lock but I use my iPad at my university and it's nice to be sure when it is muted. Not a big thing though.

And with this you have just shown you have no idea what Jony Ive does at Apple.

Bravo for spreading ignorant lies.

:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:
No kidding. Jony was responsible for the original iMac, the lamp iMac, the original iPod, the iMac G5, Power Mac G3, tower,Power mac G4 tower, Power Mac G5 tower and a host of other product designs at Apple.

So just to be clear - with iOS 4.2, I can use a software screen orientation lock and the switch becomes a Mute button? Since I rarely use the lock(I'm always in landscape), this should be a boon to me as I do use Mute more often.

...that is something that you will only do at the beginning of a session...

Aristotle -- I am not sure if you are too busy or not interested in taking the time necessary to read other's comments -- admittedly, that can be very time-consuming to do.. But if you did so, I assume you would not make blanket statements about how other people "will" use their iPads.

Who does this really inconvenience anyways? How many people within a single session continuously uses screen orientation lock? Sounds like strange behavior to begin with AFAIK. Mute is a more sanely used function. Hell, I'd question the marbles of anyone who needs to constantly re-lock their screen.

You can turn on orientation lock using the double click home button
shortcut, which is easier anyway, so what's the big deal?

I think is ridiculous that people complain about this things.... Come on! is it a relevant decision? does it change or ruin the experience? Is there a steep learning curve on how to lock the screen via software?

I could care less about this change. I own an iPad, an iPhone4 and a 3G, for those who might be interested in questioning whether I have had one of this things in my hands...

There are more important things in life than a stupid button. LOL to those who say that this would hold them from upgrading the OS!!!!

Get a life.

I agree there are MANY more things in life that are more important than a button. ;)

If you had read any of the comments by other posters who prefer the orientation-lock button as it currently is -- a hardware button, rather than a software button -- your own questions above would be answered already.

I guess this means you are not really interested in the answers, however.

Read the above comments which refer to display of photographs, if you are actually interested. :D

I haven't tried this -- had not heard of it until now. Are you speaking of the iPhone, or the iPad? Do you mean that I can lock the screen in its current orientation WHILE looking at photos (in Apple's Photo app on iPad)?

EDIT -- I just tried double-clicking the home button while looking at a photo, but this did NOT cause the screen orientation to lock; it simply caused the Photos app to quit, and returned me to the Home screen. So if you have a secret way of doing this that works better, please let us all know. Thanks -

A physical orientation-lock was a strange thing to begin with when some apps (especially games and iPhone apps) doesn't care which orientation is locked and start in the orientation they were developed for.
A software lock makes more sense to me.

Could always make have Mute be activated by hitting both volume buttons at the same time. Though I'm unsure how the volume button functions on the iPad.

Me too. I vote for a software option to use the button for different things, orientation lock, mute, colour reverse, wi-fi off, whatever.

That'd be really cool: allow you to customize the button. One flip and it turns off all audio and goes into Airplane mode, etc.

The Orientation Lock On The iPhone Only Locks In Portrait

Totally dislike. I've definitely needed to lock orientation more often than setting the thing to mute. It makes it so handy if you hand over the iPad to someone to take a look and can flick that switch at the same time.
Zactly.
Why not the option to choose what it does in settings?
I wish.
I hope they make this an option, I like the orientation switch. When do I ever need to mute my iPad? Plus, hold down volume for 1/2 a second and it mutes it anyway.
Worst part about this is that The Orientation Lock On The iPhone Only Locks In Portrait and I fear this will be the same on the iPad. I too prefer the physical aspect lock switch. I find this news to be very disturbing. :(

Well the iPod touch 4 already has this and that picture has the same icon the little circular arrow, when you press that the orientation gets locked. And that icon comes up when you press the home button twice, its in the same thing that you use to switch apps so ya you can use it in the middle of an app.

Sorry for being off topic, and I'm not trying to be rude, but it annoys me much more than a software or hardware orientation lock ever will.

Agreed, TripHop - disturbing is a good description... :(

Here's something you can do to feel a little better --

Sorry, should I change to accommodate you?

What's really frustrating is that Apple could just let THE USER customize the function of the switch! Throw a toggle in the Settings app already!!!

Not really all that big of a deal, but I'd much rather they keep the button as a screen orientation lock. Or at least let the user retask the button's function via Settings.

Boo hoo. I have not used my orientation switch once on the iPad. I have an iPhone, so it would only be logical for it to work the same way. It's not like I'll use it more as a mute switch either.

I'm more concerned about how the software lock works. The iPhone only locks to portrait mode. I (and I'm sure plenty of other people) mainly use the iPad in landscape mode. It'd be a major fail if the orientation lock only allows portrait.
