I'm more concerned about how the software lock works. The iPhone only locks to portrait mode. I (and I'm sure plenty of other people) mainly use the iPad in landscape mode. It'd be a major fail if the orientation lock only allows portrait.

Read the thread.

I would rather they leave it as it is, or give the option to choose in settings. I use the orientation lock all the time, and holding the volume switch down to mute is easy.

My wife & I, and our granddaughter, would like to say that we prefer the orientation lock as it is now. We don't want a mute switch as the iPad is permanently set to 2-bars of volume.

Another bloody button

Well, a software button in addition to the physical switch – on a multi-touch device!? Come on, Apple, the Nano can rotate the screen with two fingers, why not the other devices? Unwanted rotation? Rotate it back and it will lock. Kill those bloody switches and silly mouse interface buttons; utilize "magic" for what it's worth!

Hey, I love that quote in your signature -- that plus your post is an excellently concise way of putting it! (would make quick feedback to apple.com!)

Because some developers may want to use the rotate gesture for something else. Some things need to be saved for the OS. Others for apps.

Agrees, the ability to select from various uses in the system options would be nice. Some people may have more need for one purpose than someone else.

Signatures with your user name at the end of each and every post despite it being visible to the left of your post, why?

Sorry for being off topic, and I'm not trying to be rude, but it annoys me much more than a software or hardware orientation lock ever will.

Word.

What a ****** idea? I REALLY liked the orientation lock idea with the ipad. Now the only physical difference between it and the iphone is that its a fat ass. NOTHING is special to the iPad practically. BAD IDEA. SWITH IT ****ING BACK APPLE. FOR GODS SAKE. K? anyways, why dont they just make the screen orientation lock a volume lock? INSTEAD OF TAKING OFF ONE OF THE ****ING FEATURES I LIKED THE MOST ABOUT THE IPAD AWAY (kinda) WHEN PPL THINK THEYRE GETTING A FRICKING UPDATE. I MEAN, AT LEAST MAKE IT AN OPTION TO CHANGE IT IN THE SETTINGS!!!!!!!!!

Right. Because the key differentiating factor between the iPad and the iPhone is the orientation lock switch.

Use some logic.

I wonder if Apple will be giving away free Mute stickers to cover the little padlock icon that is next to the switch at the moment?????

This is one of the worst ideas Apple has had in ages. I NEVER touch the volume on my iPad, unlike my iPhone which changes many times a day.

Hopefully it's a simple case of the software not being 'cleaned up' yet from the iPhone version and that those features will be chaged for iPad by release.

Mark me down

As another person who does not like this. Never need mute, always needing to lock orientation. Yuck.

Did Steve get caught listening to some music his kids did not like and needs to be able to mute 2 seconds faster?

Having read through this thread, it seems quite evident at a lot of people are missing the fact that the orientation lock hasn't gone away, it's just been moved to the multitasking bar the same as the iPhone. The way some people are reacting it's as if it was removed entirely.

FWIW, I think this is entirely logical. Some people have already made these points, but:

- Yes you can hold down the volume button to mute but it doesn't work both ways (you cant instantly restore the previous volume)

- With a hardware switch, you can't have a software toggle that toggles the same setting, otherwise there would never be a standard on or off position for the button (think about it)

- I'd argue that the software button is sometimes more convenient. The iPad is designed to be held any way. I find, especialły with the Apple case, that the switch can be awkward to get to when it's at the bottom and I have the iPad propped up on my knees. Also, the switch always changes position. With the software button its always in the same place (bottom right)

- It takes literally a second to bring up the multitasking bar, swipe and lock. Maybe using the physical switch took half a second for some people. Why are people getting so uptight about half a second?

In case you want to use Orientation Lock , maybe you are reading something, doing something. Right ?
that mean your screen must be ON.

However if you want to mute,
maybe you are listening,
maybe be you got unplug the earphone in accident ,
your screen might not be ON.

SO MUTE is definitely more useful than Orientation Lock.

Why are people saying the screen must be on for the "hold volume down to mute" to work? I just tried on my pad, and it does work with the screen off.
