okto prep didnt do crap
all i had when i updated last friday was the new upgrade but all applications were gone, teh god thing is my phone wasnt bricked

It works wonderfully. You run oktoprep in 1.1.1 then update to 1.1.2. Then you need to let iTunes activate the iPhone and run the 1.1.2 jailbreak app: http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html

The 1.1.2 update wipes your /Applications folder, but the other files remain in tact (well, most of them anyways).. regardless, you'll need to reinstall all your 3rd party apps after updating. Everything works nicely like it does in 1.1.1 though once you do :)

For you Windows users, there is a handy program called WavePad. I'll let you Google & find it, but the software maker has a free version that owns. You can do a ton of audio editing and it will read and save in several different formats.

Edit: ...And by the way, I had a ringtone file that, for no good reason, it wouldn't sync with my phone. Others work just fine. Who knows. *shrug*

wave pad was actually what i was using....but i didnt know that they had a free version that you can keep. preciate that

This makes me one step closer to purchasing my ipod touch. Add a mail app and notes and it will finally be what it should have been from the beginning. Although hackers are doing a wonderful job of making it better as it is.

Man that took a while...

Right on- 160 MB ??? am I doing something wrong? That's a fair amount of data for not much reward.

converting to a ringtone

I need a bit of help ... My brain isn't workin well this morning... :)

I made a song in Garageband (long ago), I saved it - then imported into itunes. Converted to AAC (by itunes) then saved a copy as a m4a. I drug the m4a vers. to my desktop, changed the format to m4r. Now iItunes wont import as a ringtone (I'm assuming because it's over 30 seconds).

How do I now edit this down? Is there an easier way to do all this (excluding rebuilding the song in Garageband, only shorter)?

THis is what I prefer - to make a ringtone in Garageband - import into itunes as ringtone... that's it. Probably not possible yet (retarded, if it's not) but it would be awesome if it was.... though my brain is a bit borked this a.m.!

TIA

Custom ringtones work

Custom ringtones do work with 1.1.2 without hacks on a Windows XP system. Here are the steps.

1. Choose your music or sound (mp3)
2. Use audacity to cut the song to 40 seconds or less
3. Drag the song to itunes
4. Right click on the song in itunes and convert to AAC
5. Find the .m4a song in folder \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
6. Make sure you have a folder \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Ringtones (if not create the folder)
7. Rename the .m4a song to .m4r (you may want to change your computer settings to show hidden extensions)
8. Double click on the renamed song.
9. The new ringtone should now appear in the ringtones list in itunes. Select it for syncing
10. Sync the iphone.
11. Go to Settings\Sound\Ringtone on the iPhone. There is a new grouping called Custom. Your new ringtone should be there.

That was easy. Ringtones seem to be snappier...

dvorak keyboard

Can anyone tell me if a dvorak keyboard is among the international keyboards in this iphone update?

No. I wouldn't hold your breath either. I'd rate the chances of the iPhone getting a Dvorak keyboard layout about the same as its calculator doing RPN.

1.1.2 fixes latency

1.1.2 fixes MAJOR latency issues when using Edge. This upgrade is well worth it as the phone no longer hangs when waiting for the network to respond. Weather and stocks now come up instantly... email does not freeze and glitch when churning through big email boxes. you're a fool not to get this update.

reboot

Oh yeah I am serious. I get random crashes all the time. For awhile I couldn't play music and browse the web, one of them would just crash. A little annoying.

try rebooting. i had the same problem and after clearing the Safari cache and a reboot, all was better. i had to remember that this thing is just a small computer and all machines need a clean start occasionally.

Update on Custom Ringtones

Last Friday I posted in this forum about the .m4r custom ringtone with the update 1.1.2 and that it now worked again.

I also posted this information in the Apple Forums. It was a test to see what apple's moderators would do. It had over 1500 hits and about 70 posts. And the moderators let it go.

Last night Apple removed my thread and sent me a warning email.

So...heads-up...It is now apparent that the free custom ringtone allowance was more then likely a mistake. For those of you that like this new ability, I would beware of the next iTunes/iPhone patch as it will probably close this again. Do not get rid of your iToner/iPhoneringtonemaker as you will more then likely need them again.

For now the method works great and I will enjoy my custom ringtone "Sounds" and my daughter telling me I have a phone call.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

RPN is way, way more likely than a Dvorak layout. RPN is a feature of the OSX calculator, after all, starting with Tiger, so someone in Apple must like it. It's true that Dvorak is also available in OSX, but the layout is designed for touch-typing, not two-thumb pecking, and would make little sense on the iPhone.

Hmm.. They should show up on the very top...

It's working for me just fine for me.

Also, when you're converting MP3 to ACC dont raise the quality of the song since the iPhone speakers aren't good enough to play it, you'd think you'd get clearer sound but you'll end up with fuzzier ringtones. Keep it at 128 KB and don't raise it 192.

dunno if this was mentioned, but i also converted my ringtones to mono since the iphone only has 1 speaker. (even if it had 2, they'd only be an inch apart so mono is still the way to go) cuts the file size in half, literally. my 30 second mono 128kbps m4r ringtones are around 240KB.

...installing the update on my iphone now..

...installed...

works great, now when my goofy friend calls "Lean Like a Cholo" blasts from ze iPhone. hahaha!

So is this Apple "allowing" custom ringtones, or is it something they missed again that'll be fixed in a day?

I just finished the update for 1.1.2 and am looking under Settings: General: Sounds: Ringtones and don't see any options for custom ringtones. Am I looking in the wrong place or did they do away with them already?

Do you have any ringtones in your iTunes? It'll only show up if you have them there.

Ah OK...that's why nothing is showing up; I don't have any ringtones in my iTunes. I just figured there would be something, perhaps an empty folder, where my other ringtones are. I guess I was looking in the wrong place AND looking for something that really didn't exist unless I were to put it there. Thanks.

Are the steps different if I'm using Vista, or will this instructions work?

The QWERTY keyboard isn't better for two-thumb pecking. It makes perfect sense for the people who normally type with dvorak. It's a standard keyboard layout that's available on all modern computers following Apple's lead as far back as the Apple IIc.

Anyway, I can hope.
