It always cracks me up how every time there is a new firmware update people always reply saying: "Safari seems snappier."

The operative word, of course, being 'seems.'

Wel at least this time Safari IS snappier (seriously!).

I tested 1.02 on CNETs bandwidth tester. The rating was 17 Kbps. I tested 1.1.2, 131 kbps.... its a LOT snappier. Can anyone tell me what 3G phones test at?

In one area that I was using EDGE, I was getting 190 kbps with 1.1.2. Though I do not know if it is a result of the firmware, or a network update. Though I have not gotten speeds like that ever with EDGE.

Custom ringtones do work with 1.1.2 without hacks on a Windows XP system. Here are the steps.

1. Choose your music or sound (mp3)
2. Use audacity to cut the song to 40 seconds or less
3. Drag the song to itunes
4. Right click on the song in itunes and convert to AAC
5. Find the .mpa song in folder \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
6. Make sure you have a folder \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Ringtones (if not create the folder)
7. Rename the .mpa song to .mpr (you may want to change your computer settings to show hidden extensions)
8. Double click on the renamed song.
9. The new ringtone should now appear in the ringtones list in itunes. Select it for syncing
10. Sync the iphone.
11. Go to Settings\Sound\Ringtone on the iPhone. There is a new grouping called Custom. Your new ringtone should be there.

That was easy. Ringtones seem to be snappier...

I'm having a heck of a time getting this to work. My iPhone is 1.1.2. Itunes is 7.5.0. I followed each step and it didn't work. I'm on an XP machine. I cut about 10 seconds out of a song using audacity. Everything seemed to work until step 8. XP didn't know what kind of extension .mpr's are. So, I chose itunes to play it. Itunes didn't do anything with it. It did not put it into the ringtones section. It wouldn't play it. It wouldn't do anything. I tried to even manually drag it into itunes. No luck. Help please!

I just want to be sure, if I jailbroke my iPhone previously, will this return it to a non-jailbroken state?

oops

Sorry guys. The extensions are .m4a and .m4r. Just change the "a" to an "r". My bad. Hope I didn't cause too much grief.

why, with a completely jailbroken touch, with everything i want (for now) on it... iphone apps, nes, editable calendar, etc. would i possibly want to do this update. yeah, no thanks apple, i'll keep the ipod touch that i love.

Made a ringtone today - on my Dell @ work with iTunes. Converted an mp3 to AAC and shortened to 30 seconds with the end tags in iTunes "get info". Changed to ".m4r", dubble-clikked and iTunes loaded it into the ringtones...

Also checked Safari/iTunes together and it worked fine for over a half hour before somebody HAD to talk to me....

All is good with MY iPhone.

So I tried to put those ringtones on my phone. And I got all the way up to where the ringtones show up in my iTunes but they wont sync over to my phone. And yes I have the boxed checked to have them synced. Can anyone help

Are they over 30 seconds in length...because I had one at 45, and it did not sync...cut it down a bit and it did (I actually think it has to do with file size, but I do not know the cut off point).

And for the record, Safari still crashes with the iPod...although instead of it cut cutting off, it started to stutter first, then stop playing...progress? Either way, it sucks that still this feature is not fixed.

ipsf phone upgraded successfully to 1.1.2

just updated my 1.1.1 ipsf unlocked phone to 1.1.2 using the method on tuaw ... Took less than 10 mins and worked like a charm :D

Last night, I kept trying to play songs while I surfed the net and after a minute or so while browsing the internet.....the music kept stopping....consistently kept stopping

I just gave up after awhile.

I when ahead and uploaded the new firmware and now i got I error message in itunes saying "itunes could not connect to the iphone because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iphone before it can be used with itunes"

i get this error message too but haven't been able to find any way to get past it

in addition to this first error message, when i go to my iphone i also see the following message "Incorrect SIM, Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone" with the option to slide the arrow beneath to the right for emergency calls

i've done some research on the internet to find out how to correct either of the error messages and found nothing for the first message about the passcode. i have found some stuff on the second error message and from what i've read believe i have to downgrade my firmware back to 1.1.1

i've tried to follow the instructions i found but have run into a problem that i hope you can help me with. it's my understanding that i need to use PuTTY to talk to my iPhone via SSH. however, when i enter what i believe is my wi-fi IP address i get the following message:
PuTTY Fatal Error, Network error: Connection refused

I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong - maybe i've got the wrong ip address, thing is i can't get it from the iphone since it's locked - i'm hoping somebody on this site will be able to help me

As an FYI, i should let you know i'm not in the states, i'm in Toronto, so my phone is not with AT & T, it's with Rogers Wireless

Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated
thanks
