Wasn’t there a problem with in store pickup during a recent launch for a number of customers? I’d love to pick up in store, but I’d hate to experience an inventory glitch. Picking up at UPS has always been great for me, but I enjoy the launch day vibe at the Apple Store.
Highly unlikely. You’re far more likely to have an issue with a courier than Apple directly.
If I recall, last year there was a bit of an issue with their server which prevented Apple Store from selling their product for a short period, but I believe that was fixed within an hour. I wasn't able to pick it up at my scheduled time that I choose Burt was able to pick it up an hour later.
This will be my second year pre ordering an iPhone, I had it delivered to my house last time and received it on launch day only this time I wanna try a different method in the event I can’t secure my order to arrive on launch day... has anyone gone to the Apple Store on launch day and just cancelled their online order with the help of an Apple Store employee so that you can just buy one that’s in stock at the same time? I would only try this if I can’t get mine to show up on launch day so I wanna hear if anything like this has been done before?
So it is doable as long as your order is still in the "Processing" mode. So on pre-order night, if you pre-ordered but was not able to secure a launch day deliver, keep the order on just in case and then on the 20th, you could go in early and see if they have one you want available as a walk-in. As long as your order still says Processing and not in "Preparing for Shipment" or shipped, you can cancel it online. Once your order is in preparing for shipment or has been shipped, I do not think you can cancel those.

Courier issues happen all the time for reasons outside Apple.

I do not believe so. In order to finance with the carriers, you need to buy from the carrier (which I don't typically recommend)
Well you do have the option for Verizon Device Payment Plan on apple.com so looks like you can:

I got mine at 8AM on launch day after preordering early 2AM Friday morning (I'm Central Time)

Usually when pre-order starts. Sometimes you have to do it pretty fast as stores gets limited stock on launch day.

I’m going to be in Washington DC on the 20th. I wonder how crazy the Carnegie store will be. Last year I got my XS at the Michigan Avenue store in Chicago. Getting the phone was easy. Restoring from backup was not. In store wi-if was terrible as was my hotel wi-if. I probably should wait and get the phone back home but I’d really like to use the camera in DC.
