just because its your own personal "ideal" size of an iphone doesn't mean its not outdated.
You didn’t address my question. Why does the passage of time mean phones have to get bigger? Will 6.5” phones be “outdated” in 2024? If 4” was a good size in 2012, why does the calendar changing make it a bad size today? Have humans’ hands and pockets grown in the last 7 years?

"Lower" cost seems more appropriate than "low" cost. in my opinion.

Yeah, the iPhone 11 is only about $50 lower than their standard flagship prices a couple years ago.. but when you start selling $1000-1500 iPhones suddenly $650-750 looks like a low cost option.

I do appreciate that Apple's been giving the XR & 11 the same chips and most of the features the higher priced models have. Last year the XR had the best battery life. For this release, it's really the display, a little more water resistance, and an extra lens that sets them apart.

As an XR owner, yes, it's a great phone. It's just not a great phone if you bought one last year. It's a mediocre upgrade, but if you're coming from a 6 or 7, it's most definitely a sizable upgrade.
Glad you mentioned that, Going from a Product Red 7+, I'm loving this new gen. Not worried like other people about 5G, (not even close to my area). Seems the only people complaining are the ones who upgraded last year. But for people like me, it's a great upgrade time.

I'm coming from a 7 and my wife is coming from a 7 Plus so we're real ready for new phones. The only thing she's upset about is the lack of telephoto lens. But I'm sure she'll get over that. I hope... ;)
I had telephoto on my 8plus, while it was nice, it def wasnt a deal breaker. I rather have the ultra wide

Surprisingly this year, every review seems to have forgotten something: BEZELS

We are in 2019. Compare the iPhone 11 (or even the Pros) with just about every other manufacturer's phones and the size of its bezels are completely unjustified. For not talking about screen resolution….
I prefer symmetry over non sense like curved edges...
In the real world people don’t care about bezels.

You know, there’s a lot of people that don’t have this no-bezel fetish.

I’m an IT guy, *anytime* I use the term bezel I’m met with blank stares.
This.

why do people on this site care so much about smaller phones??? stop living in the past
People on this forum care about what Apple isn’t doing. That’s it.
They would criticize nonetheless

When you are staring at your iPhone under a microscope and counting pixels. The type of average use some MR readers do everyday.
And you really need a microscope to count pixels on an iPhone 11.

Please explain how the passage of time changes the ideal size of a phone.
Easy answer: contents.

Quite different today.

iFixit will dissect iP11 on friday, camera model numbers might reveal something...
IFixit told us very little about camera sensors in the past.
They are usually better regarding battery size and memory.

“Stop believing your eyes and believe Apple’s marketing department instead. You’ll be much happier”.
I’m believing my eyes.
Without an hater filter between me and the screen.

at low DPI that my eyesight easily resolves and makes text look blurrier to me

why Apple choose to go backwards in tech to save a few extra dollars in their pocket...
And maybe you would be happy with a pentile 1080P display, which actually have a lower “real” DPI count.
But someone told you that “1080 and OLED is better”, so it must be true. Right ?

More specifically a lot of the complaining is people who upgraded last year and like to upgrade every year. They feel like Apple has robbed them of their most prized annual ritual.

Quite different today.

the two main forces driving bigger size are customers desire for screen size and more battery. I suspect that is overwhelmingly the two biggest points of emphasis for the majority of customers. Most people don’t really want a smaller screen, they just want a smaller form factor to fit in their pocket and be able to use with one hand. If Apple could automagically make a 6.5” device that shrunk when put away and that made your thumb grow then nobody would be complaining.

People need to realize overall innate desires of the customer base in total are at cross purposes.

Guess I’ll have to wait until next year for something with TouchID and no notch to replace an iPhone 8 that will be 3 years old by then.

In the meantime, I’ll put a new battery in.

This is nonsense. We’re talking 2012, not 2002. We all used our phones for exactly the same things in 2012 that we use them for today.

I honestly don’t understand why it’s so hard for some of you to accept that smaller is more usable for a significant number (yes, a minority, but a sizable minority) of people. This idea that phones inherently must get bigger as time goes on, and that smaller is inherently outdated, is as baffling as it is wrong.

Im keeping my 8. Right now I might wait 2 years to upgrade unless next year is a redesign or something other than minor spec updates.

I was so looking forward to the iPhone 11. Well until I seen they got rid of the zoom lens! I would be buying one right away if they kept the zoom lens I can think of no occasion when I would have needed a wide angle lens it’s utterly pointless to me, a zoom lens would have been much better. So sad cos there is no way I’m paying 1179 for an iPhone - even if it has everything I want. It’s just to much!! Oh well, guess I’ll have to find an old iPhoneX on eBay

Me too..thought this was a good upgrade and cost efficient to bridge me until next year with the trade in, but lack of zoom but wide was a total deal breaker for me. Id rather keep my original X.

Just about everybody ... except persons with smaller than average hands. I want an iPhone the size of an iPod touch.

Apple's obsession with speed has replaced their obsession with thinness. No mobile apps require the power of modern chips. If they instead focussed more on efficiency they could design an amazing small phone. Plus small phones with smaller screens use less battery anyway.

Oh so first it was, we need thicker phones to justify them getting smaller and now the new idiotic talking point is that we need worse phones just so that they can be smaller  Be realistic dude even in a situation where the battery wouldn't be the issue you still couldn't fit half the things in an old SE enclosure let alone innovate with that. We need larger camera sensors (because physics) not smaller ones just so that they can fit in a phone that's too small for 90% of Apple's public (if it isn't more than that, there's a reason Apple has discontinued the SE and it wasn't because it was a huge success in sales numbers).

Really? I am of the opposite opinion. I take many outdoor pictures while hiking and the 2x zoom is invaluable for pictures/videos of animals, mountains, etc. If the 11 had the telephoto I would jump on it. Instead it's probably the 11 max pro if I wanted to upgrade my 7 plus.

This time they offered this link:
Halide's write-up
So, there really is a hardware upgrade.

I would buy iP11pro, but the price difference is just not justifiable.
I'd need 128GB, so I'd have to pay 120€ for something I don't need and the rest of the difference is 350€.
I could buy just a camera with longer lens for that price...

Well in my part of the world, literally every single female out there puts their phone's in their back pockets. Go to the mall and you'll see hundreds of them no matter the age. It's a "thing". My wife and daughter does it too as well as every woman at work.

I've asked many of them why and if they were worried about sitting on it. None of them care. All of them said it's never been an issue and have never damaged their phones.

I thought this was a worldwide thing.

There is literally ONE millimeter difference on the bezels.
[doublepost=1568738714][/doublepost]
If you stop looking at “numbers” and start looking at the display, you’ll find out the XR/11 screen is better than most of the so-called high end android phones.
[doublepost=1568738791][/doublepost]
As battery life and camera quality are concerned, the difference is night and day.
For the rest, the iPhone 8 still is a great phone.

I'm looking at the display as it is what I have, problem is, when I take a screenshot (very often) I get images form videos or websites at that resolution.

Lol, I feel you. I’m wondering what would happen if people did a blind test with the phone what Pepsi did with Coca Cola in the past. Can’t imagine iPhone would come on top because you get less everything for the highest price.

yeah!
