Apple has been doing a ton of research into fabrics the last few years. My guess is that if this is true it’s being used as a production testbed (with no actual applications here) for something that may or may not actually wind up in a different product.

They did a similar thing with LiquidMetal being used for the SIM ejector tool (remember those?) even though it served no purpose for that tool. It was to test production abilities. I think later on that material became part of an antenna design.

My iPhone 6 is still going strong (after a battery replacement). It's obvious that lighting connectors for new products will become extinct in the near future - either they'll move USB-C or Apple will find a way to remove the cable entirely. I'll hold onto my phone until either of those two events.

I honestly prefer this Anker Cable. Much better value and durability.

Nobody said they were discontinuing the existing USB-A to Lightning cables.

Besides, if the EU is going to force a standard, it's going to be USB-C at this point.

this is about what it may be „shipping“ with though. So you get a cable but no charger to „save the environment“ I mean money, but not a charger this cable works with so you either 1 buy the usb-c to lightning charger or 2 more electronic waste by not using the provided cable since it doesn’t work with the chargers u already have

" but it does offer a braided Thunderbolt Pro cable " ... 😂😂😂 that's too much Apple. And I'm not talking about the $129.99 price tag

Love it. That cable is all it needs. Everyone should get a USB-C charger if you don’t have one already, iPhones have supported quick charging via USB-C since the iPhone 8. Here’s a nice compact folding 18w one for $9.99:

Is Apple finally admitting their default cables are junk and want to replace them with a HQ cable?
Time for usb c, lightning 2.0, or thunderbolt iPhone connection.

If it makes the cables more durable that would be one bright spot. The current cables are terrible and start falling apart after too short amount of use. Have too many cables with the shielding wire exposed. Not durable at all.

I have probably one of the biggest Lightning defenders around here recently. But it's time to ditch it.

There really isn't any redeeming feature to lightning anymore. It's nearly as old as the Dock Connector was it was replaced.

I'm not a huge fan of USB-C either, but it's objectively a more versatile and better-supported standard at this point.

Lighting is a no sale at this point. While it is nice they are including a potentially higher quality cable, there is no upgrade there until it is a type-c connector. I'll stick to my X until lightning is dropped and there is a major change to the screen.

Then you're going to be owning your X until your last day on Earth. There is no room to incorporate USB-C inside of an iPhone.

I cannot believe this company refuses to give up the lightning port.

Believe it.

And nothing to plug it into.

Hard to believe that you don't already own a single charger. I guess this will be your first rechargeable device.

Could be even better if they dropped lightning and went Usb-C since many of their other pro products have gone that route (MacBooks, iPad pros, etc.) Come on Apple.

How's that? The braided cable is thicker compared to the standard cable. The braiding is top of the normal PVC cable sheathing.

There's no PVC in any Apple product except AC power cables in certain countries.

The wire insulation is a different polymer. You can't use those plastics for the jacket because they're expensive (like fluoroplastics) and/or soft and not abrasion resistant or have issues when exposed to light (polyimide).

The idea of any jacket, including a nylon braid, is to have a tough outer surface to protect whatever polymer or foil layer that's underneath. PVC is an ideal material except for the environmental concerns surrounding incineration.

If they are an iPhone owner, how many iPhones came with USB- C charger (just the 11 pro). I know the die hard apples claim everyone stockpiles all those extra chargers, but you can remove your mouth from the apple teet and see this is nothing more than a money grab.

I understand people will be angry at this and I get it - but personally, I would rather get this nice USB-C cable in the box than a lightning USB-A cable with an USB-A charger. Of course, I would prefer to get both an USB-C cable and a charger, but ok. And, yes, I get most people won't like this decision.

5G speeds are not enough to entice you? Its using the same cable as your X, so whats the big deal?
