Lighting is a no sale at this point. While it is nice they are including a potentially higher quality cable, there is no upgrade there until it is a type-c connector. I'll stick to my X until lightning is dropped and there is a major change to the screen.
To me, they could keep lightning forever... if you own peripherals like audio interfaces or external mics (I have a Røde i-XY) changing the standard will make more stuff obsolete (nothing new in the Apple world, though).

I don’t think there will ever be an iPhone with a USB C port, and for what matters I’d consider that a downgrade, certainly not an upgrade.

the regular old vinyl coated lightning cable we've been subjected to for 13 years was designed for a 5 watt charger. Now that the charge rate of the new phones can be much higher, it's about time they upgraded the cable too.

Cars are coming from the factory with USB-C ports? Seems like USB-A is still the norm.

Most of my 2019-2020 MY rental cars have had USB-C ports. Carmakers need to anticipate the future. Also, USB-C is more durable, reducing warranty claims.

So not only are customers not getting a power brick (was fine with that), they are also not getting a cable they can use with current current iPhone power brick (I have the iPad Pro so that should work fine). I really wish Apple would just switch the ports from lightning to USB-C then give me a USB to USB-C cable.

The MacBook Pros when USB-C only in 2016, iPad pro went USB-C only in 2018. It is past time for Apple to go USB-C on all of it's devices.

I would love to be able to carry one charger and cable for all my devices.

Perhaps we no longer have to throw away the original cables, and go and buy an Anker... I have a full box of Apple cables, If I give them to the kids, they survive few weeks at most. The rock bottom Anker last typically 2+ years in our family.

What are you doing with a cell phone that usb c is going to help you in any manner

So basically what Anker has supplied for a few years now. No doubt Apple will claim that their way of designing a braided cable will be revolutionary.

"We saw other companies make these cables. Apple wanted to wait until we could do it properly."
Apple’s cable is too short for me. Of the last two Anker Lightning USB-A cables I bought, both lasted less than a year. On one, the insulation jacket split near the connector; the other got a corroded edge connector 🤬 Ones I bought for a family member fared no better. Extremely disappointed... I used to swear by Anker.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a high quality cable? I’m done with Anker.

I can plug in a CF Express reader and make use of the port as a on the fly place to dump RAW files. Other than that the port serves no function and it can just as easily not exist so we have a fully wireless device. If they want to make the iPhone a iPhone Pro now, well, they'll surely be doing some work to get TB3/4 into the next CPU and that would make it even more useful. As it currently stands lighting's only function is to make the iPhone the oddball when it comes to charging. Why should I not be able to charge my phone with the same cable as my camera, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro?

Ya I have an X as well but I'm upgrading this year no matter what accessories come in the box. It's starting to feel a bit sluggish and battery life have never been great on the X. Good enough reasons for me to upgrade to the next iphone. Unless something from Android royally blows my mind I'll be looking to upgrade to the smallest 12, 12 pro and less likely but would think about the 12 Pro Max. Though with an 11" ipad pro I think a compact phone probably makes more sense and cents for my pocket.

I think it's a good idea to have a usb c cable in the box vs A, it also kinda feels like there should be a USB C to A adapter along with the lightning to headphone jack adapter but I doubt either will come in the box.

At the same time you can just ad the headphone dongle to order if you really need one of those still.

Hopefully Apple offers a USB C brick and headphone dongle at a discount when ordering an iphone.

It's still odd that ipad pros have USB C but iPhones don't though.
