What about customers who bought iPhone 11 and only got a power adaptor with USB A? What then?

Unless I’m missing something, you can’t plug USB C into USB A and make it work
They buy an adapter. The world continues to turn, with a little less electronic waste in it.

In six months after Apple and Samsung stop packing power adapters, nobody will be talking about this any more. Everyone swearing they’ll never buy another iPhone again will go back to buying iPhones. Everyone bitching about the Lightning connector will go back to buying Lightning iPhones. The forums will be filled with some new outrage and the cycle of life will continue.

Buy a USB-C charger and enjoy fast charging! It’s less than ten bucks! Use it with your future iPhones, or any USB-C devices.

My prediction is iPhone 12 will ship without EarPods and charging brick, but will include both USB-A and USB-C lightning cables for power. Not sure why they would be braided though.
I hope they just use usb c cables. That’s a lot of waste to include two. Let’s all move to usb c. I use a 30w usb c charger for my 16 in MacBook Pro. I charge it overnight like that no problem in my room. The charger that came in the box stays downstairs. USB c is awesome. My one usb c power port next to my bed charges my iPad, Nintendo switch, computer, and anker 24000mah power pack.

If they are an iPhone owner, how many iPhones came with USB- C charger (just the 11 pro). I know the die hard apples claim everyone stockpiles all those extra chargers, but you can remove your mouth from the apple teet and see this is nothing more than a money grab.

I probably have over a dozen USB A -> Lightening cables and a bunch of chargers from previous iPhones; so unless Apple changed the MiFi chip to be able to reject earlier cables not getting a charger is no big deal. I doubt most owners get rid of their old charger when they get a new phone; and if they are replacing an existing one would probably be smart enough to realize they need to keep the one they have if they have no USB-C charger.

I would not be surprised if Apple either included an USB A -> C adapter or drop the price of theirs when the iPhone first comes out with an USB-C connector.

Geez, still using lightning cable.
I understand the sentiment, I have been on both sides on this: iPhone, iPad Pro, a very old MacBook (a big chunk of it on windows), etc... so halfway Mac user/halfway windows with a bunch of old ports.

This being the year of Work From Home decided to go all in OSX, iMac, AirPods, Apple TVs, etc... suddenly I have no shortage of cables either USB-C or Lightning or USB-A, let me tell you, I do find the Lightning cables amazing and even more so by surprisingly how old it is by now. It is smaller, lighter and less cumbersome.

After having to connect (at times, because they do last on batteries a long time) Magic Keyboard(s), Trackpad, Mouse, AirPods case... it's definitely swift and easy with the Lightning cable, not to mention that it's like 1/5th of the volume, it just 'gets in' more times in one shot too.

I have nothing against the USB-C connector and the Thunderbolt version is as powerful as it can get, but you know what? I would rather those stay for the 'rear' side of the user presence, for daisy chaining screens, HDDs/SSDs bays, bigger controllers, etc... I would rather keep the Lightning cables towards the front facing user side of things: keyboards, phones, mice, etc.

I think I might be very alone on this sentiment though, my personal experiences.

I said until they drop lightning. They can go USB-C or full wireless, but I will not be paying for an obsolete connector.

By definition, if it still used it is not obsolete; but more to the point what does USB - C do that Lightening won't? Persoanally, I like the idea that my existing peripherals will still connect.

Well, it should ship with a USB-C to USB-C cable. How are people still tolerating Lightning?
I know. I cringe every time I plug it in to any of the many lightning cables or the dock I own. It’s just awful. I just want to know when I can throw away all these lightning cables I own and buy usb-c cables are are marginally different and better for some reason.

I would love one of these cables.

USB-C is bigger than lightning, that's the downside. But like all of you, I'd rather have one connector for all.
A dream people have had for several decades now ... soon a reality?

It's almost like Apple is a ridiculously greedy company and nearly forces their customers to buy accessories in order to realize the full potential of their products. USB-C connector will require the purchase of a new charger for most, and they are quite a bit more expensive than USB-A. And of course they are keeping Lightning for the sole purpose of keeping the corner on the iPhone cable market.

USB-C is a great move, it has much greater power handling. But 1) Include a power supply, and 2) Get rid of Lightning and use an embraced standard, USB-C, one you actually push on your Mac lineup.

Imagine if we went to the USB-C connector on both ends, and it stuck around for as long as USB-A has? How much easier would everything be?

But Tim and others at Apple care about culture and people right? Lol. The Apple consumers are ultimately paying for all of this "generosity", grants and charity. Don't be fooled, all of that has a purpose as well.

It would be just like Apple to ship with no adapter but the included cable is USB-C forcing many people to have to buy a USB-C adapter. Guaranteed all these adapters people say they have filling up drawers are the 5W USB-A adapters as that’s what Apple has been shipping with the iPhone since forever.

I can plug in a CF Express reader and make use of the port as a on the fly place to dump RAW files. Other than that the port serves no function and it can just as easily not exist so we have a fully wireless device.

Well, I can output video via Lightening so there are other uses for the port; and doesn't the Apple Camera adapter llow you to transfer files from a camera or SD card as well?

My concern with a totally wireless device is the time to will take to transfer files, backup the device, etc. Not to mention the need for yet another charger to carry around or and expensive Apple watch style charging cable to break or lose.

Why should I not be able to charge my phone with the same cable as my camera, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro?

Because Apple said no.

Yeah, cuz’ you know, no one has multiple adapters laying around their house or Could easily purchase one for a few dollars at the most. How inconvenient.😁
Most people don’t have USB-C adapters laying around as prior to last year Apple wasn’t shipping them with iPhones. And sure you could by one for cheap on Amazon but who knows what the quality is. And if people will just jump on amazon to buy one (or buy one from Apple) that’s not helping the environment.

Lighting is a no sale at this point. While it is nice they are including a potentially higher quality cable, there is no upgrade there until it is a type-c connector. I'll stick to my X until lightning is dropped and there is a major change to the screen.
I'm sure they'll get right on that for you now that they've read your demands.

It's still odd that ipad pros have USB C but iPhones don't though.

I'm guessing with Apple's positioning of the Pro the faster data transfer speeds, higher power capability and more flexibility for connecting devices made it a better choice.

Sure. I suppose it’s not as common as a lightning brick, I have plenty of USB chargers and it seems a lot of products support that for an accessory. However, my post was more of being sarcastic in terms of it’s not that big of a deal to the majority of consumers given the amount of over exaggeration on MacRumors discussions.

Additionally, you don’t have to purchase one from Amazon if someone was concerned about your authenticity, when almost every retailer has those in stock.

Apple will go wireless before dropping lightning

They make $ from MFI on lightning

Lightning makes sense for Apple, not for everyone else. Love to dream explained why iPad Pro was exception to this. Also explained there is a lengthy roadmap, with purposeful intent. Also said that No USB C will be coming to iPhone in retail market, although they have had multiple prototypes with multiple iPhone generations (from X to 12)

Multiple other Reputable Leakers over the years have suggested the same - USB C will not come to iPhone

Because Apple said no.

The camera connection is indeed SD which is mostly just consumer cameras. Pro cameras where on a mix of CF, CFast, and XQD. These are now all exclusively CF Express. Then even if there was a lightning to USB-C adaptor, that would add an adaptor when they could just push one port.

The other grip I have with lightning is we have to have a separate charge cable for that one device. I can charge my iPad Pro, cameras, and MacBook Pro with one cable that also acts as a high speed data cable when I need to dump files and don’t have a reader with me.

You are aware Apple don't give a monkeys about comments on this forum? It isn't an official Apple forum and the chances they'll take input from one person is slim to none.

I downvoted you, then thought about it more.

I find that Lightning is superior to USB-C when it comes to smartphone applications. But there really needs to be a standard for this. I find USB-C to be awkward and cumbersome to use when compared to Lightning. But if USB-C is the standard we have then so be it. I will adapt or just buy a wireless charging pad.

I removed my downvote because after thinking about it I realized that you are right and it was undeserved.

You are correct that "all the adapters people have laying around" are mostly going to be the USB-A type (though there are 4 iPads in my household of 4 people, and even my teenagers know "the bigger white plug charges their phones faster than the little white plug.") So if you are more than ankle-deep in the ecosystem, you more than likely have a transformer that will output more than 5W.

More importantly, are you telling me that no one out there has a recent Apple computer, or even a recent Windows laptop with USB-C to plug a nice new cable into? Even the nasty Dell Precisions my office buys have multiple USB-C Thunderbolt ports now. Honestly I haven't used an Apple-provided wall wart in years, regardless of wattage.

Likewise, the list of cars rolling off the lines with USB-C is growing steadily - Tesla is the only one I can name for a fact, but others who've posted above seem to know of more. The number of cars with included or optional Qi chargers is even greater.

I think this whole phone port/charger format is way overblown, and as I've said before, I think mostly it is just people being sad they aren't getting as much junk in the box for free.
