The last iPhone I bought was in 2018 and the next iPhone will be when the iPhone loses software support.
Alright. But let's pretend, you upgrade every year.
After 5 years, what would be better for the environment:

5 phones in rather big boxes
+ 4 unnecessary power adapters
+ the fact, Apple would need to manufacture those adapters, despite you don't really need them,
or...
5 phones in smaller boxes
+ 1 power adapter in a small box
+ the fact, Apple would NOT need to manufacture those adapters, because you can use the one you already have?

You agree with an end to capitalism? That is pretty rich for someone who posts as often as you do about everything from the latest/greatest iPhone to luxury cars.

As for the Article, I also call bull. My wife is from Henan province, and I've been to ZhengZhou (CGO) MANY times in the past 20 years. There has always been massive amounts of air pollution, mainly due to the huge amount of heavy industry. I doubt seriously that an assembly plant would have a meaningful impact on that. Not to mention that for many years there have been large numbers of private apartments and homes (in towns and villages) in the greater ZhengZhou area that are still heated using coal.
Luxury cars? Are you talking to the right poster?

Not to mention that every advancement that makes modern technology possible has been funded and developed by our tax dollars only to be sold off to private companies who package it for consumer goods...

I am of the opinion that not producing an entire and ever-expanding lineup of iPhones every year would be most impactful.

Sorry, but you know very well why this won't happen.🤷‍♂️
Because this is something, Samsung and Co. would definitely NOT copy.

Re Luxury cars: I thought I saw you posting about your Volvo XC70 I could be mistaken though.

Re: Capitalism: As someone who lived in East Germany till 1981, I'll have to respectfully disagree with you about the ability of non-capitalist systems to bring technology into the hands of the average consumer.

😂 yes, someone buying a 15 year old Volvo to fix up and drive forever is clearly someone interested in the latest and greatest.

I also (personally) replaced the battery in my 6s three times before I upgraded this year. You’re barking up the wrong tree if you think I’m interested at all in buying the shiny new thing every year.

Name one technology that drives the modern world that wasn’t pioneered by federal research grants through universities or DARPA. I can wait.

I absolutely agree. But let's not pin this on Apple and go after the car manufactures (especially Tesla who is killing it in the lithium department), tv makers, appliance makers, clothiers and other manufacturers whose core business depends on yearly release cycles. Yup we would probably save the environment, but further kill the economy.

All these guys calling for the end of capitalism, we'd revert back to the Middle Ages with substance living, of course we'd have to shed billions of people first as we couldn't feed everyone without capitalism driven industrial farming/distribution.

Yes. The ones who can’t do without yearly release should definitely stay that way.

So we can blame “demand” for poor air quality, but we can’t blame poor manufacturing regulations for poor air quality?
More “blame the gun and not the shooter” train of thought.
If china held to similar regulations as US, and paid their people similarly, iPhones would be made in the next country to “cut moral corners.”

Why do you think there’s a rush to move to India (and then next time certain parts of Africa)? China is stepping up their standards from *internal* pressure of a rising middle class. That means it’s time for Capital flight to the next sweatshop of the world, India.

India will go through the same development cycle China just emerged from over the last 40 years.Because we’re not interested in breaking this development cycle ($$$), the least we could do for the planet is help them leapfrog the the hugely polluting methods that are being geared up in the rural sections as we speak.
