These numbers don't add up, at least here in the UK.

Looking at eBay sold prices: iPhone 12 Pro Max (used) seem to be going around £750-850 mark. RRP £1099. S21 Ultra (used) are around £800-850, RRP £1149.

Barely any difference. This entire article is basically what one trade-in place has valued phones at.
What you are doing is comparing a less then a year old products (one hardly couple of months old) when both do have strong support. Try and compare older ones, say iPhone X and Galaxy S9, or whatever flagship released by Samung that year. The older the devices, the greater the resale difference. That's because Samusng devices do not age very well.

That's not what this article about though. The subject is quite clearly iPhone 12 vs S21.

Calculating depreciation based on MSRP is just plain stupid. Very few people buy Samsung phones for MSRP (and those that do usually get a lot of free stuff). When calculated against the actual retail price, it's not clear which devices hold their value better.
Good point. You are saying MSRP on a Samsung phone is like MSRP on an automobile. For most of the garden variety of autos (excluding high performance and ultra luxury) most people do not pay MSRP.

With Apple products, the resellers may offer BOGO deals, but that is on them and not Apple, although there are sales to be had.

Electronics like smartphones are not assets but liabilities. When purchasing liabilities resale value is of no consequence.

I have sold a Galaxy phone on eBay mint condition (UK) just few months after purchase for barely the half the price, and no discount when purchesed. Their resale value sucks.
I have just done a search of completed items on eBay UK for iPhone 12 [all derivitives] and they are not selling at anywhere near as high as the article suggests, some have gone for <50% of MRRP. eBay is about the worst place to sell a premium phone however.

Folding phones are not tier 1 🤣 They're just a weird flex.
What else do you expect Apple fans to say? They disparage all new tech until Apple releases its own version. Remember Galaxy Note (the first phablet)? Apple fans were laughing at it for years and now they all have the phones with this form factor.
