I had a Mac from early 2000's, it shipped with 256MB RAM and upgraded to 768 RAM I believe. That thing could edit videos, photoshop images, build websites, and run multiple software together like Office. May I ask what does a phone do with 6GB RAM? My Only guess is gaming.

I'll keep saying this... it's GOOD that Apple is conservative with RAM because it forces developers to not be LAZY! Developers are notoriously lazy, when they are allowed to be. Many feel that optimizing their app is an *optional* task. Now, I don't use Xcode, but I believe it does some optimizations automatically?

I build websites and my home-grown framework puts optimization first at every level, and the results speak for themselves. Fastest websites on the planet. It blows my mind how many wasteful, bloated websites are out there. A little effort to write optimal code and compress images and assets goes a long way to make the world a happier place.

Wow... they still compress images for websites? I remember in the late 90's it was worthwhile compressing an image from something like 120kb to 25kb to make it load faster. At fiber speeds, I thought this was over, although I am against websites using mega large images.

Everyone keeps saying "iPhone 12", when it's almost certain to be "iPhone 11S".

That hurts my brain.
We’re basing that assumption on the 3 year cycle that Apple seems to have changed to.

iPhone 6, 6s, 7 (8, the outlier)
iPhone X, Xs, 11/11 Pro
iPhone 12/12 Pro, 12s/12s Pro, 13/13 Pro

Not to be "that guy", but Samsung phones had 6gb of ram like 4 years ago.
Its not a secret, I would say its facts. Samsung needed it earlier as they (Android) don't manage memory as well as iOS does. I have never had any memory shortage in any of the iPhones i owned, even though they always had less compared to Android devices which were out same year. So it would be natural that new Android flag ships in 2020 are shipped with 8GB if not even more memory.

6.1 the “smaller” iphone pro???
Man!!! Why??!!! Because 6.1 is the most sold format? Cant it be because THE PRICE??????

BTW does this line means apple is lowering base model or raising top model?? Hahahahha make your bets

I think there is too much focus on specs and not enough on the user experience. People obsess too much over paper numbers, while there is not enough of “how does one use this product to get more out of technology”.

Xcode can help you manage memory, but if you're a bad developer, or just in a hurry, you end up wasting memory.
I don't think it is bad to have more RAM on a device, but I do like the fact you have memory constraints in your app. My only wish is the ability to have some control over that, for example I may want an app like Photoshop to be able to use as much RAM as necessary, while I expect my reminder app to use a small amount of memory and I'm ok with the system killing it in background when it needs memory.

I used to be excited in the past about the amount of memory cpu specs and so on in devices.
Nowadays, I care only about the functionality and the experience.

Why is everyone so excited about RAM is beyond my comprehension. Android users have reason for it. A bloatware OS needs it.

5G in US. Makes me laugh. I came to NY, today I am leaving back to Europe, but I got the chance to trade in my iPhone 7 Plus for the 11 pro max.
During this time I realized how low quality GSM signal there is in US vs Europe. Both for calling and for Internet.
No offense but you Americans are so ridiculous at wireless and communication services. You need proper base stations rather than 5G in devices.
Not to mention the prices!!!

What you call good internet, I call frustration in when it comes to ping times. You may reach some decent download rate but the ping time is a joke.
Several times walking through the city I lost the signal completely!

You measure battery life but it is heavily impacted because the devices constantly tries to adjust for poor quality signals from the antennas.

You guys don’t need ram or 5G. You need proper service providers... at least in NY area and Austin,TX :)

All that ML means we need 2gb of RAM per camera lens is my take away from this.

With more DRAM does it mean Apple will stop dumbing down iOS/iPadOS? Background multitasking limit on iOS/iPadOS 13 has been reduced to a useless 20 seconds for things like active SSH session with Termius when it used to be 10 minutes with iOS <=6 and 3 minutes with iOS 7 thru 12.

This was a known iOS 13 bug that should have been fixed around 13.1? Are you saying you still have that issue

I hope the cheaper 6.1" with two cameras will be available in 512 GB. I would be using the iPhone 11 instead of the 11 Pro Max if it was available in 512 GB as a storage option. I'm probably in the minority here with most people finding 256 GB enough but for my usage I want 512 GB and then I have to go for the "Pro" iPhones.

I also hope that the default storage option is bumped to 128 GB but I have a feeling Apple still will go for 64 GB for one more generation.

California is not much better when you compare cell reception with ASIA as well. The cities often oppose allowing cell towers to be put up in cities. Go to Vegas near any of the major casino hotels on Verizon or T-Mobile and try and get cell reception. Properties there are big enough to throw up a couple of cell towers in parking lots but guess who does not want you have good cell reception there..? 😉

RAM is a relatively cheap component & your defending Apple being stingy with it while taking a swipe at developers. Yes because Apple is giving them tough love rather than dragging its a$$ as usual. You said other things already use more memory so not everything is being optimised anyway. Funny I don't hear folks complaining about having up to 1.5TB of RAM in the Mac Pro crying "that's too much". Could it be that having MORE of such a component is better for productivity. So what would less be then..?

not to be "that guy" but Android takes up more memory. the comparison is pointless

Try being that guy that understands the current situation of memory requirements rather than parroting that false narrative of os efficiency. Fact is not enough is NOT ENOUGH when browser tabs have to reload. Besides reloading RAM wastes battery so where's the efficiency regarding that. iOS ain't the prom queen anymore, she's bloated & buggy and making excuses to make do with less is no excuse at all.

I’m being forced to get an even bigger phone now again:confused:

The new iPad Pro which is double in size if not bigger compared to iPhone 11 Pro comes with either 4 or 6GB of RAM as big as it is shows that Apple is being quite stingy here with RAM. No excuse for Apple being stingy with RAM
