At the end of the day it matters not what an Android phone needs, even though we all know its more than iOS, but what iOS needs. Apple should supply the RAM in their phones based on what gives the best and most fluid experience to the vast majority of their customers… for most of the lifespan of the device. So if they're giving 5 years of iOS support then their devices should have sufficient RAM for say 4 years of that. The question is whether Apple is pushing RAM down to be yet another one of those not obvious things that compelled people to upgrade earlier.
Like varying storage sizes there's no reason why they cannot offer the same for RAM and/or scale up with the model.
FWIW, my Samsung Galaxy S10 with 8GB RAM starts up and idles requiring 3.2-3.5GB RAM… which is pretty high in my book. Irrespective of uptime though I don't ever see it consuming more than 5GB. For others that may be more due to different app usage and the fact that I close all my apps once a week or so. There's more than plenty of legroom moving forward especially given the fact that I highly doubt I'll be offered Android 13/14 let alone even getting Android 12 so what RAM I have today will in fact last the life of the phone. Also, being able to close all apps with the press of one button, unlike the one by one that's needed by iOS, does mean that recapturing a swathe of RAM is significantly easier.
If Apple wants to say to everyone that they give the best and longest device lifetime experience then they should offer the RAM that goes along with that whatever that may be.
