Keep these reports coming, so funny seeing all the excuses people keep making on why it sells bad.

It sells bad because apart from a very small very vocal minority nobody wants a small full fledged iPhone.
The mini isn’t a ‘full fledged iPhone’.

Oh boy, I’m gonna buy the next iPhone 13 mini, because if demand is so absolutely low, it will probably be the last iPhone smaller than 6”.

Not necessarily, Apple could still go for 5.5”-5.9”. 😉 They could certainly bring back a 5.8” screen in a lighter body. It would also be interesting to see what will become of SE over the next few years.

I really love my Mini and hope it continues going forward. And as far as battery life goes, the lowest I've seen at the end of the day was 36%. More like around 60-70% on an average basis. But I am not a power user either.

Only thing that could really keep me from upgrading is if the next one has TouchID in some form added to it. Otherwise I am happy with this phone and is a keeper for some time to come.

Timing blunder on Apple's part. Rolling out the SE2 prior to the 12 mini soaked up at least a few million potential mini buyers (and several hundred million $$$ of foregone revenue). The cheaper, 'small' iPhone SE2 is a relative bargain for those who want a smaller screen / one handed use, but was guaranteed to cannibalize sales from the mini.

I say it shouldn’t cost more than $599
$550! No wait, $450!

MOST people do not want small screen iPhones when larger screens are available. Small screen buyers may care less about features and can get an SE.
Or they care about features and can't get a Pro Mini because there isn't one.

I own the 12 mini and I'm not really in love with it as much as I thought I would be.

It is way too tall and narrow.
Too tall that I had hard time reaching out to the top and bottom with thumb.
Too narrow that typo occurs too often with keyboard on screen

A 5.4 inch fat iPhone with 3:2 screen ratio (like the original iPhone 4 ratio) should be the way to go.
At least 16:9 would be way better than current nonsense display ratio
I agree, it's too tall, I've thought that since the iPhone 5. I'd love the screen size of the original iPhone, with the modern almost-all-screen design.

I think the people who want a small phone are a small vocal minority.

I think people who can't stop trash talking small-phone-fans are a vocal majority. Seriously, I don't get why you people seem to view this as a fight. People who like small phones don't need to make excuses for them not selling (and frankly there are a hellovalot of people on both sides of the debate in this thread who seem to think they know better than Apple on the subject, which is odd as I suspect very few of them are trillionairs). Small phone fans wants the option of a small phone, why does that seem to bother so many people?

Hasn’t this been reported before at least twice? Why another article about it?

Folks just love drama. Portraying at least one Apple product as a failure (when it’s clearly just the least sold, and one model always is) gives room for all the usual anti Tim Cook trolls as well as the “Apple is doomed” crowd to get out again (it hasn’t been going too well with the doom predictions as of late) plus all owners of said device chime in to proclaim how great they think the thing is.

Seems like the people who like small phones have become a loud minority.

To be fair, forums tend to amplify that as users go there to discuss things that don’t work, things they’d like to see different etc.

I don't think the issue is that it's a small phone; there are plenty of people out there who clearly like a smaller device, hence the success of the SE 2020. For me, the problem is that it's simply too expensive for such a small phone.

Apple is pricing this at the same starting point as last year's 6.1 inch device; in order to get that size you now need to spend at least another $100. And there are compromises that come with a smaller device, too, such as a smaller battery. $700 just feels like too much for the Mini.

Maybe they just misjudged the price/positioning. Maybe a better option would have been to drop the XR, move the 11 into that price point and put an LCD screen instead of OLED into the Mini and sell it at the current 11 price. That may have been a surefire hit. Or not. Who knows? 🤷‍♂️

The dismal battery was the decision maker for me...you can’t fork over $700 for a base model that has a battery worse than iPhones 3 generations ago

So Nikkei Asia are making claims that the iphone 12 mini sales have been lacklustre, yet GizmoChina are saying that the 12 Mini was the 10th most highest selling phone of 2020 with approx 14.8M units sold, even higher that the 12 Pro which did not make the top ten. Who to believe?

Ya, but you if you make a product your not gonna go in it as "this will turn out bad", so this is expected.

No one wants the mini, everyone wants the big boy.

I know a person who upgraded her old SE to the mini and she is very happy with it. Short of a design or operational flaw, I'm pretty sure she would only have been stopped by incorrect pricing. But, she got the "low price deal" from her provider that usually comes along at some point if one keeps his/her eyes open.

My wife got one the other day and it’s great. Really a wonderful thing. If I hadn’t needed the Lidar on the Pro for work, I’d probably have gone for it.

I suspect if more people had been able to see them in person more people would have had confidence to try the new size. Hopefully apple stick with it for another year.
Genuinely curious: can I ask what you use lidar for at work? It's a fun tool that brings obvious benefit to the phone's computational photography features, but I've been wondering what other use cases are out there beyond just that.

I don't think I'm the only one who waited and waited and finally gave up?

I held out for soo long with my OG SE waiting for a new small phone but caved a few months before the mini was released. As much as I want the Mini I can't really justify upgrading my iPhone after just a few months.

Ideally I would upgrade in the end of 2022 next, but if a Gen 2 Mini is release I´ll upgrade a year early.

I’ve heard the mini’s battery struggles to get through a whole day - when brand new. After a year or two usage : it will be useless. I wish Apple had tried this after battery technology had ramped up quite a bit more.
I don't use my phone extremely often, (calls, few texts, podcast/music, news app) but I do game for about an hour each day on my mini, and the battery usually stands around 40% at end of day. (Though most of my use is background) 😝

I guess that depends on how you use it. For me, the mini could easily last about 2 days on a charge. I have 5G turned off (since it's not in my area), and I don't talk a lot on the phone anyway. I also kill any apps after I'm done with them. But for my usage, I've been fine with how it's been performing.
