Wish my 5 would have lasted till the 12 "mini," it died a couple of months ago, so I "had" to get the new SE
I had the 5s which literally fell apart this summer. Then I got one of the last original SE which I will pass on as soon as the Mini comes out. Looks like it will be one of the rare occasions where I will preorder a technical device blindly.

I guess they will learn from the sales number how the mini is the gold standard and make it a pro next year.
I would love that, as I am a fan of smaller phones. But if it's the best seller (likely), it will probably be primarily because it's also the cheapest option (of the new 12s).
I wonder if the smaller notch is because it won’t have the Face ID camera array & instead it will have the new iPad Air Touch ID power switch?
This phone with no notch and TouchID in the power button would be as close to perfect as any phone as ever been. But I don't think it likely.
No rumors pointed it to being in the iPad Air either. Screenshots of the user guide/manual leaked a week before it was introduced, which was the first and only indication of it happening.
But there have been so many more iPhone 12 leaks than there were leaks for iPad Air 4. I just think we would've heard something by now. I'd love to be wrong, but I doubt I will be.

Let me quote the genius of my generation, me:

Here is a radical idea, Apple:
make SE line a one-handed phone, with reduced feature list.

By reduced I mean I don't need AR games on it, or movie theatre experience, or triple lens camera.
There would be still a ton to innovate on this SE line.

They decided to name it Mini – great, that's more in line with the concept. Bring it on, could not wait any longer.

Moving forward Apple has nothing to make an iPhone SE3 out of so I feel that the spec of the 5.4" iPhone 12 is already targeted to being the shell of the SE3.
While I would like that, the rumor so far is that the SE3 will have a 6.1” display (see last table row in image below from https://twitter!com/DSCCRoss/status/1312013153547452418), which makes sense as that is more mainstream.

The smaller notch for the 5.4” is a must have and it will be almost for sure if apple wants you to have the same top right and left space , pixel UI
If they kept the same notch on the right o ly 2 icons would had the space like signal and battery level or/ network are you in
Apple doesn’t want that to have different pixel usage for iOS so, expect the notch to be smaller by some mm and thats all

I think 5G mania has had a negative impact on the 2020 iPhones. For some reason, 5G has become a must-have technology on all new phones when people don't realize that they will not see much, if any, benefit from it for at least a year. As a result, expensive, largely unusable 5G technology is driving up the cost and forcing Apple and other companies to make cuts elsewhere. The batteries on the 2020 iPhones sound pitiful and we're (from the rumors) losing out on features such as 120hz refresh rates and smaller notches that would have an instant impact on functionality, usability, and performance.

Leaving 5G out would have caused the biggest waves, but it's actually the least important major new feature to have right now. I think a lot of people will get their 2020 iPhones, not have any access to high quality 5G and wonder why they bought a new iPhone.

I am ok with all of that. It hurts when I drop my heavy iPhone 11 on my face in bed. I need a mini.
Don’t expect too much diff between current 5.8” iphone 11 with the mini 5.4”
No wonder for the smaller pro they go with 6.1”

For people who buy a new phone every year, this may be true. But with more and more people keeping their iPhone for 3, 4, or 5 years; having 5G NR in this year's phone is extremely important.

I said the same thing a few days ago, but it bears repeating again. The iPhone 8/X generation fell victim to this exact attitude. The iPhone X has felt long in the tooth for some time now for one very big reason that no one seems to talk about: a three-year-old cellular radio. Even with the Qualcomm modem, you can't make up for the fact that carriers have moved on. They now have 5x carrier aggregation live, 4x4 MIMO antennas, LAA, CBRS, 256QAM modulation, and support for bands that the iPhone 8/X and older don't have, like B14. Collectively, these represent a huge improvement in the ability to hold a weak signal and speed/performance, especially on congested cell sites.

If Apple had waited another year to add 5G NR, this year's iPhone 12 devices would suffer the same fate, being obsolete at launch and suffering from poor coverage and lacking the ability to take advantage of capacity improvements that will be realized in 2021 with 5G NR. People keep complaining that "nobody asked for 5G," but in 6 months time when carriers are stealing 20 MHz channels away from LTE to augment their 5G capacity and LTE capacity and speeds deteriorate, we'll all be thankful that Apple didn't wait another year to deliver 5G.

Exactly how I feel. I don't know why they decided to keep the ultrawide lens in the mini and regular 12 instead doing wide + telephoto. (Probably to upsell people to the Pro and force an unwieldy pocket brick on everyone).

That ultrawide lens is an absolute waste. The regular wide lens is already too wide and I never use it on my X. First thing I do when I open up the Camera app is tap the 1x to turn it to 2x. Every time.
You, a few others and I prefer the telephoto. However, it appears the majority these days don’t care about photographic accuracy at all in exchange for a wider FOV. You even have prominent youtubers such as Dave Lee who say they prefer the ultra wide, and when people like him make statements like that, others follow. I really dislike the distortion in wide lenses used nowadays, let alone ultrawides. Besides, the sensors and resolution are tiny for cropping 😕

8 vs 10 bit color will be pretty irrelevant, 120 Hz and resolution are the more important specs here.

Everything else seems like a fair tradeoff. Lidar is one of those "really cool feature but no everyday practical applications" type thing.

I mean, that's nice and all that they "like" the ultrawide. These are people who are going to buy the Pro with all three lenses anyway. But for normal people who don't know who no-name YouTubers are, they should be including the useful lenses. And just to be clear, I get what you're saying (Apple is catering to these nobodies who run the tech world now instead of the people who actually buy the majority of their products). This complaint isn't directed at you, it's directed at Apple.

To be honest, I don't understand the photographic accuracy of the lenses. I use the camera like "a normal," not some YouTube "celebrity." I just don't understand the point of the ultrawide lens. I've never been trying to take a photo and thought to myself, "I need to fit more stuff into the side of the frame." It's always already wide enough. Usually I'm walking closer to get stuff out of the frame. There are plenty of times I'm trying to get a good close-up photo of something or just couldn't get closer because of a door or window, and don't want to lose resolution to digital zoom. The telephoto lens is great for that. It just seems like common sense to include the 1x and 2x lenses. The YouTubers will get the ultrawide in the iPhone 12 Pro Super-Duper Max phablet anyway.

A lower cost is not likely at all. Rumors for months indicate prices are going up. Apple has elected to remove $60 worth of accessories from the box, and raise the price, allegedly because of the addition of 5G that no one needs nor cares about.

So you think the iPhone 12 mini is going to start at $999 like the iPhone X? I sure hope not.

And the one feature you will surely gain.... room in your pocket.
it’s also rumored that people who purchase the iPhone 12 mini will have their pants around their waist since they won’t be lugging the equivalent of a small laptop around. 😂😂
They definitely need to sell some iJeans with 12 6.7" so it can fit

I'm also looking forward to this. So is my 73 year old mother. Older people have generally less flexibility, strength, dexterity in their hands, so they drop these devices more. But they DO use them, need them, buy them. Can you imagine some old lady with a giant phone? I mean, more power to them, but I think most just want something comfortable to hold/use.

As our population ages this is going to be an enormous buying demographic that I don't see many companies catering to.

The ultrawide holds no allure for me either. I only upgraded from an SE1 to a Xs to get the so-called "telephoto" lens, as a 50mm prime on a Canon 6d is my preferred shooting setup (when portability isn't so much an issue anyhow), and the zoomed in lens/sensor on iPhones that have em' is pretty close to that focal length (more like 56mm 35 equivalent). But I've never gotten used to the girth and heft of the Xs, and the "telephoto" lens has noticeably less low light performance than the wide... so 12 mini it is for me, and I've found a nice man-bag to carry around a decent compact camera, probably the G5x Mark II, once someone finally has a sale on that model.

None of the phones will get getting 5G you can actually use outside of a very few urban settings, so the headline is pretty much inaccurate.
No, virtually all of the rumors suggest that all of the models will come with sub-6 5G support.

It’s still going to be a good screen, good quality camera, not sure how useful/necessary LiDAR Scanner would be, and 5G is not important today and still won’t be in the next year. The battery is the only thing mentioned that really matters. Let’s see what Apple delivers.

The price itself is worth giving up the exclusive features.

Apple: Just release the new iPhones already. People are tired of waiting and tired of the rumors in 2020.

Waiting for Apple to release this...

You joke, but I miss my 6S's size to the point I'd switch out my current 11 pro for this microphone! Let's go already, Apple!

I'm going to go from an 11 Pro Max to the Mini, and I can't wait. Only thing I will miss is the telephoto lens. Pretty fair trade off to be able to have some pocket room again.

I have to say I'm not going to be a fan of needing to buy the pro "max" model for additional features. Apple seems to be following Samsung's precedent where if you want all the latest and greatest features, you need to shove a tablet down your pants pocket.
