Im debating about ordering now to take advantage of the extra $150 to trade in or waiting for a black friday deal at apple (possibly $150 in bonus for the sprint trade in + whatever amount gift card apple gives) not sure what to do

I tried looking at the site, but it was down for over an hour. Luckily I was able to access the preorder via the iPhone app with the Apple Card. Looking forward to the 12 pro max pacific blue! Luckily I'm in another country right now that allowed me to stay up till 10 or 11 pm and it was 0500 PST...

Everything went really smooth this year. Maybe less people ordering the later batch of models? I picked up:
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max 128GB for myself
  • iPhone 12 Mini 64GB for my wife
  • MagSafe Charger for my wife (she doesn’t have any sort of wireless charger coming from an original SE)
  • HomePod Mini - figured I‘d try it out for 99 bucks and like having an intercom to call the kids. Intercom sold it for me.

Found out the hard way that I couldn’t do the iPhone upgrade this year since I switched off of ATT to Spectrum Mobile over the past year. Kept getting nagged by Apple to do all the pre-qualification before pre-order went live on the 6th. Because I wasn’t with one of the 4 major carriers, it would not let me do the upgrade even though the carriers have nothing to do with it. The loan is through Citizens One and I turn my prior year phone into Apple. I’m not on any carrier contract either.

Thanks for nothing, Apple. Apple support was apologetic, but otherwise unhelpful.

Why don't they "release" the reviews on order day, only the hands on? I would like to read those (especially about the camera) before I decide on a $1300 purchase

Couldn't see a way to get signed up for IUP so tried the 24 months interest free scheme, got rejected despite literally having an Experian score of 999. My partner who has an impeccable credit history was also rejected, as well as a friend.

Is this one of these 0% finance deals that are only available for 0% of the people?!
If you are UK based ignore this fictitious score that has been made up by Experian.

As you will see, despite being 999 you still got rejected. This ‘score’ is not seen by Barclays. Even if it is exemplary (in your opinion) you maybe didn’t fit Barclays profiler.

Electoral roll, links to your partner, address changes, a credit limit of £5000 on a credit card but you make the minimum payment each month etc. etc. See what’s on your credit file. The score I promise you is for you and you only. Barclays will never see that.

I’ve seen people who have been bankrupt come out with scores of 999 with Experian.

The credit score is important in the US. Not in the UK.

Yeah, I joined the iPhone upgrade program back in April 2019 and had to jump through hoops since I didn't have a AT&T consumer account.
Because of the timing, I couldn't upgrade to iPhone 11 Pro when it was released. This time I again had issues due to my wireless service. I decided to just pay off my XR (the payoff amount was less than the trade-in value) and just buy my iPhone 12 Pro Max directly. So no more iPhone upgrade program for me.

In retrospect, it seems like it wasn't worth it. With the trade in value of my old iPhone, I could probably of upgraded to a new phone whenever I wanted to.

The need for an existing account with one of the major 4 (3 now) wireless carriers makes me think that maybe they are giving Apple a kickback.

It's an unlocked phone that I am buying through Apple. Why do I need a particular wireless service and account?

Lesson learned.

I've never understood why the US requires you to have a phone plan to buy a phone. Here in Australia I can go to any electronics retailer including Apple Stores to buy unlocked iPhones.

In the U.S. it isn’t required to have a phone plan in order to buy a phone from Apple. The carriers require it because they want to get you as a customer so, they often create these supposed great deals to lure people in and then keep them for 24 months or more if they can.

Ah I see. Otherwise I’d buy iPhones in the US if I was there as a tourist as it’s probably cheaper than Aus

Might keep my eyes peeled for John Lewis next week - am I right in thinking that if I manage to get one from elsewhere as long as my order from Apple isn't preparing to ship I can cancel without an issue?

You’re not wrong to be confused. Apple store rules have changed overtime.

Sometimes Apple has a straight unlocked option other times it doesn’t. Two years ago you had to ask for a Tmobile version and it would be unlocked but there was no specific unlocked version.

It seems counterproductive and adds unnecessary layers to purchase a phone. I mean when you purchase an iPhone at an Apple Store, Apple allows you to sign up to a plan with our three major carriers (Telstra, Optus, & Vodafone) but of course it’s optional.

In the US, carriers pay big money ($50-200) for every user any retailer can sign up for them.

It’s difficult for retailers (including Apple stores) to say know to this kind of money.
