I'm always surprised how many people I find have iPhone 12 pro's and don't know what Lidar is.

I'd bet 90% of the iPhone 12 users don't know what most of the features are on the phone. OIS? RAW? f-stop?

I think a lot of Apple buyers just default to 'the best' (most expensive) option they can afford.

Exactly. They simply want the new shiny.

So yeah, Apple did overestimate demand by quite a margin but that does not mean it is a failure in any way.
Of course it does. It means there is a chance they'll discontinue the mini line sooner rather than later. If had sold better, its future would be much more solid than it is now.

I'm always surprised how many people I find have iPhone 12 pro's and don't know what Lidar is. I think a lot of Apple buyers just default to 'the best' (most expensive) option they can afford. When it comes the iPhones, carrier deals and monthly financing results in the 12 mini not being very attractive unless you really love the form factor.
LiDAR on its own is basically a pointless gimmick right now. It shouldn't come as a surprise most people don't use it or even know about it.

And yeah, the mini is not attractive so people don't buy it. And no, people don't just default to the most expensive phone. The 12 outsells both the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. It should be noted that the Pro Max outsells the Pro though, because it's bigger, has a better battery, and has a better camera setup.

Not my daily driver, but I’ve handled the Mini extensively and it is an excellent phone and form factor in-hand. My guess is that people see the regular iPhone 12, with larger screen and battery, and consider it a no-brainer upgrade for an extra $100. Also, more and more people use their phone as their sole communication device - no desktop, laptop, or tablet. When you live your entire life on a pocketable screen, the size of that screen matters a lot.

I love the fact that the 12 mini is not selling well. Back in the iPhone X days there were so many goobers stating that an iPhone X design in an SE package was an automatic buy. Where are these goobers now?
They bought the seventh best selling smartphone in January? (And to get it out of the way, I have the 11 Pro Max because I love big, but I feel for those who love small and up until now couldn't get what they want.)

I think the "mini" name had an effect on sales too. They should have called it iphone 12. Called the 12 the plus, and so on. I think it would have been a much better sell. People equate mini with LESS than normal. Therefore why would I buy less of a phone when I can get a real iphone 12 for only 100 bucks more. More people would have said, I don't need to spend the extra 100 bucks on the larger size.

Make a new Mini every three years like you do the SE and be done with it.
That might be the answer.

The Mini outsold the SE in January, and it almost surely has a higher unit margin on sales. What it doesn't have is the SE's extended product cycle which may (or may not) lead to a less favorable ROI than that model.

Just like the iPad Mini is updated on a slower cadence than other iPad models, so too might the iPhone Mini eventually be compared to other iPhone models.

I don’t think the form factor is why the mini isn’t selling, it’s the price. Apple should have waited and made the mini the new $399 iPhone SE, they could have used an LCD and single camera to keep the cost low.
I can understand the price for the SE as they didn't need to re-tool or re-design whatsoever beyond the better processor.

$499 would have been fair for a slightly better than SE (but far Lower spec than 12) Mini.

MacRumors attempts to paint the 12 mini as a failure are both obvious and pathetic and I do not understand why. So it’s not the #1 most popular phone in the world. It’s primarily being beat by its siblings. It’s outselling all three Android models. 1% of ALL Smartphones sold in the world for January is still in the millions of phones. Drop the hate already it’s making you look bad.

iPhone mini is the result of listening to a vocal minority that made the business case seem much bigger than it actually is.
Yeah, and people simply just got used to the larger phones over time, and accepted the fact that a larger phone comes with a larger battery.

Most people who have upgraded to a larger phone, when they hold the smaller ones are like how did I use this before.

Myself included, I had several 4.7" Touch ID phones, never felt like I wanted the 5.5" Plus ones, but once I upgraded to a XS Max, I couldnt go back to something smaller.

I'm sure the iPad mini is not in the

It's funny how the one's who have no interest in the mini, think that their opinion matters more than those who have no interest in a phablet.
And, yes...it was implied.

Its funny how you imply I'm a phablet fan. I actually bought a mini last year.

And yet the 12 mini, free with bill credits after trade in of an iPhone 8 has been my favorite iPhone purchase to date.

That really doesn’t mean much since for everything ever created, good or bad there would be at least one who loves it. I think iPhone mini will be just a flop. Small phones made sense over a decade ago. People in general (majority) love large display phones and this has been proven by popularity based on the most sold devices.
