If that is accurate, Apple may not make another mini phone.
Which would be a shame. The only reason I didn't buy the Mini was because I had just bought the new SE, which for my uses is good enough. I'm not a fan of big phones (small hands 😂) which means eventually, when the time I feel like upgrading comes around...I'd pick up something like the Mini in a heartbeat.

Deniers: “This is still not evidence of poor sales! These are all rumours and speculation until Tim Cook personally visits Foxconn and shuts down the line on live TV.”

Rest of the world: “Nobody wants a small display when we’re consuming more media every day.”

The whole idea of there being a huge subset of users that still want a tiny iPhone has never made sense to me. They're just a really vocal minority that never seems to amount to much in significant sales. Most people use their smartphones more than any other device, and as smartphones become more and more capable every year, the screens actually NEED to be bigger. If you're just looking at Twitter and iMessage and making phone calls, yeah, a tiny phone might be fine. But most people do more than that with their phones and the sales prove it.

Not sure how or if at all this translates to cases of similar users but I’ve been wanting a smaller iPhone for years. IP4 was my favorite form factor. Then the time finally comes only for me to discover based on how I use my phone and what I use on it, combined with aging eyes, I bought the Max.
Yes, similar feelings!
No telephoto turned me off.
So went for Max. Good phone but uncomfortable to hold. And heavy. XS Max was much more comfortable (for me...)

The research is only for the U.S. though? I've read other reports that the mini is popular in Asia.

I also think the pandemic has had an effect. People aren't thinking as much about going out with a smaller phone, and also not gathering as much with friends to show off their smaller phone.

In China, the minimum phone size is 6.45” whether you buy from Vivo, Oppo, or any other domestic brand.

Don’t blame the pandemic. Phablets were growing fast even before 2020.

And this is a surprise? The days of the smallest phone is the best phone were over 15 years ago. Unless you are a third grader, the mini does not appeal to today's users and what we use our phones for.
But it has a bigger screen than the iPhone SE.

Sad news if that is true, but at least I have mine :). Probably they could still use the mini as the base for the SE3. The timing of the mini release was really bad also, just a couple of months after the SE2 and coming after the 6,1. Probably it wouldn’t change too much the things but I think that it did not help on the numbers

If i have not updated my iphone with the 11, when it was released, the 12 mini would be my choice.

With these numbers, pretty sure it will be discontinued so Should have waited.....

Hmmm, 5% of sales for the whole iPhone lineup for the whole year? The Mini was only available for two months of 2020, and there were like 12 other models sold in 2020 (11, 11 Pro, Max, SE, 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, etc), I wonder what percentages the other models sold in 2020, I don't think that they sold as few Minis as we are made to believe. I'll be getting one to replace my XS soon.

First half of January. At least read the headline before replying.

It’s a fantastic phone. Shame it’s not doing better.

I agree with the comments about the telephoto lens. The ultra wide is useless. I’ve not used it once. But the same could be said of the 6.1” 12, so it’s not just that.

Hopefully this doesn't cause Apple to bail on the design; it's the first iPhone I've felt comfortable buying since they killed off the 4" iPhone SE and if I'm forced into gianto-phones in the future I'm gonna be super bummed.

And for the individuals that want a compact, modern iPhone with a great camera but don't sit around watching feature length films on their devices all day? Just SOL I guess?

I just want a phone that I can comfortably use one-handed (and even the iPhone 12 Mini is barely reaching that most days) and doesn't feel like I'm trying to fit a small baking sheet into my pocket at any given moment.

One could say the sales were smaller than other phones?

That volume didn't measure up?

I'm surprised. I expected this to at least find a significant nice market. If this was what you wanted, get one now. It won't come back.
Not really a surprise, I would have bought one to replace my original SE if I were leaving the house on a regular basis. But at home no need for a phone of any size with an ipad and macbook. I just hope the stock will held until autumn and drop the price with iphone 13 coming out.

Btw, I would be very interested in the market share among people with other devices (tablet, mac) registered to their icloud account. Keeping people spending thousands on other devices would make selling mini phones worthwhile.

Imagine they had introduced the 5.4" as the iPhone 12, and the 6.1" as the iPhone 12 max. Most people would have bought the 5.4" because they just want the "regular" iphone.

Apple introduced the XR as the lower end iPhone and the Xs as the regular iPhone. The XR sold more.
