That’s okay. This is a great form factor for a “phone”. Get an iPad and watch your movies. :)
Except for those of us that use their phones heavily at work texting, emailing, taking Pictures constantly, and using company apps/websites. The mini will not suffice. The regular iPhone doesn't. But we can't change physics and don't have a better battery solution yet so the Max it is.

I'll never understand why Apple won't just add a few mm to the thickness for a significant increase in battery life. It's just like the MacBook Pro that got a miserable keyboard so it could be N mm thinner. Stupid. IMO.

Since the iPhone 6 and until the iPhone 12, they have become thicker.

The battery on the 11 pro max and 12 pro max appears to be basically identical.
however, what I find more interesting is how heavy these phones are compared to last year‘s.
iPhone SE: 5.22 ounces (148 grams)
iPhone 12 Mini: 4.76 ounces (135 grams)
iPhone 11: 6.84 ounces (194 grams)
iPhone 12: 5.78 ounces (164 grams)
iPhone 11 Pro: 6.63 ounces (188 grams)
iPhone 12 Pro: 6.66 ounces (189 grams)
iPhone 11 Pro Max: 7.97 ounces (226 grams)
iPhone 12 Pro Max: 8.03 ounces (228 grams)

I think it’s good to give choice as long as people realise that smaller means less space for the battery. Leave it to the customer to decide whether the trade off was worth it.

On the other end of the battery life range I am frustrated as an 11 Pro Max user that Apple didn’t offer a choice, they made the 12 Pro Max thinner and only maintained the previous battery life. I wish they had kept the same thickness and given another increase in battery life. Or maybe they should have gone all-in on choice, the released the slimmer 12 Pro/Pro-Max as just announced but also release extra long battery life variants that increased thickness to be the same as the iPhone 4 was. I don’t remember too many people complaining about too thick with those and that would have given amazing battery life.

I admit that weight might have been an issue with thicker versions of the Pros but depending on how many grams it added users wanting maximum realistic battery life without needing to strap on a really bulky battery case could at least have decided for themselves whether the trade off was worth it in a similar way to how iPhone Mini users can now decide about trade offs.

When did they stop publishing talk time estimates?

All the people suggesting this is obvious also need to factor in that smaller screen.

I currently have an 11 Pro and was really hoping to go with the 12 mini but am now torn. The 2 ounce weight saving (+ smaller size and cost) is amazing but I do want the 2x optical zoom (wish it had that instead of ultrawide) and sounds like LiDAR helps improve portraits.

Funny really, Apple provides the comparisions for video playback, streaming and audio playback - I have a TV and car stereo for these things - how many hours actual call time do I get ?? - you know cos it's a 'phone'

I expect it's better than my SE and I for one am really happy they have made a phone not another huge ugly phablet as my hands stopped growing along time ago.

Still paying the premium for it...

Shifting the goalposts much? The design builds the antennas into the band and they are using the same chipset. it doesn't make sense to exclude the compatibility, especially considering the devices are unlocked.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro right now...I upgrade every year but this is the first year I just don't know what device I want (first world problems). I'm torn between the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 mini. I really want a smaller device - I hate having a brick in my pocket, but I don't want to miss out on the new camera updates and battery life. I feel like the devices are so dang similar.

This iPhone 12 Pro Max is getting closer to the dream iPhone.

My only wish now is for the effing notch to disappear. (And the switch to UBS C, which will never happen).

iPhone 12 and Mini 3.66 GB, that’s what the base A14 comes with. The Pros are rumored to be closer to 6 GB.

Exactly! Be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it.

Works for me. About damn time there be an option for a regular sized phone for normal humans. Appreciate the wish coming true. Never gonna hear me bitch about it.

Mmwave 5G uses different antenna modules then the antennas built into the band. (watch the keynote where they showed the antennas, that pill shaped hole on the side is a passthrough for mmwave antenna) Mmwave antennas do carry a premium currently.

Yeah, the target audience for this are those still holding on to the 6-6S-7-8 form factor, and the battery is an improvement over those, so it's all good.
