Okay, sure, the 12 Mini doesn't match the much larger/newer iPhone battery stats, like duh, how could it? However, according to Apple's website it does match the XS Max, which was pretty well-regarded for its battery life back when it launched. What's my point bringing up that comparison? Well, it's that while battery life on the 12 Mini might not be as good as the latest/larger models, it's still shaping up to be pretty dang good all things considered. For anyone upgrading from an iPhone 7/8/SE or heck, even a X or XS, you're looking at improved battery life here despite several upgrades in a significantly smaller package. That's something to be excited about imo.
This is a very good post. The truth is, it’s nearly equal to the XR which everyone raved about it’s battery life just 2 years ago. 15 hours of continuous video is amazing for such a small phone. I really want the 12 Mini!

So XS is about 10 hours and iphone 12 mini is about 15 ? Wow that's quite an improvement. I'm really on the fence about 12 mini or 12 pro. I don't like the fact 12 pro is slightly bigger than my XS. which was slightly bigger than my 7. It's about the size of my old Note 4 which was massive. It's like carrying around a slab. So a smaller, thinner, lighter phone really appeals. and battery life is good. Only thing lacking then is the fusion and third lens. IS that worth it that's my quandry

I can't justify spending £1k on a phone knowing that an imac starts about £1100.

I mean it's all crazy money (cheap) for what these devices do and the technology we take for granted these days but it kind of highlights that the price isn't necessarily tied to what you're actually getting, it's just what they can get away with asking. That big ol spaceship campus and a bank full of cash tells you they know what they're playing at though.

an imac is order of magnitude LARGER. can you fit an imac in your pocket ? no. It's apples to oranges comparison no pun intended.

30 hour time difference in audio playback? thats seriously significantly different.

That’s okay. This is a great form factor for a “phone”. Get an iPad and watch your movies. :)
My thinking exactly, reserve the phone battery for calls and watch media via my iPad. An iPad pro mini will fit into this mobile setup nicely.

Smaller device, less space for battery.

We can't expect Apple to defy the laws of physics, can we?
They can always make it thicker. I forgot. It's Apple: it can never be too thin or too rich.😒

I never thought I'd see the day when a regular sized phone is considered a mini. Now I'll wait to see if my 5' 2" wife wants a normal size phone or one of those jumbo phones.

I'll never understand why Apple won't just add a few mm to the thickness for a significant increase in battery life. It's just like the MacBook Pro that got a miserable keyboard so it could be N mm thinner. Stupid. IMO.
It is about choice. You can add battery case (and there will be a few of those I imagine will the new magsafe) BUT you can not shave it off. Just one example, you are going to a wedding in a tucks, you want light and slim.

I could potentially expect them to NOT include useless mmwave 5G (for the vast majority of the country) and save some power that way... But then I guess Verizon wouldn't be happy now would they?
Can't you just turn that off?

Well, bless their hearts.

They could have made it, gasp, a little thicker...not fetishized thin over all other possible features/specs? Achieved the screen size/physical width customers want, and still include a decent battery?

Ha ha... yeah, I know, not going to happen in the hellscape timeline we're trapped in.

They actually bragged about making it *thinner*.. lol.. Apple isn't limited by (battery)physics, they're limited by the obnoxious fetishization of thin over any other possible feature/spec when designing every f'in thing they make.

Not that I'm going to be watching even two hours of video on an iPhone Mini screen anytime soon? But, come on? They gotta be trolling us at this point, right? lol.

I can't wait for the return of the crappy PITA butterfly KB with the Apple Processor Macs, and them bragging about how you can fit two inside a manilla envelope. You know it's coming.

Just gotta laugh at this point.

I have like... six extra adapters in my house, did you need one? I mean, I’m sure you probably have an extra one laying around to, but I know it’s easier to make a big deal out of nothing on the internet, amirite?😁

They removed about $30 in value, but managed to .. increase the price of the phone ... (Apple is also likely saving millions in shipping/transport costs with the smaller packaging allowing more devices per/pallet) I'm sure shareholders are happy, but I'd say that anyone with pets or children, who seem to destroy these accessories with amazing efficiency, actually have a legit beef here?

So many people making definitive decisions and statements about a product battery that they really don’t know anything about, much less how it will fare with the new modem. How about we wait for facts before making declarative statements about what phone x,y,z will be able (or not) to do?

Apple's iPhone 12 mini is the smallest iPhone that's been made available since the original iPhone SE, with a 5.4-inch display and a body that's 5 inches high and 2.5 inches wide.

Since it's the smallest iPhone Apple sells, it's also the iPhone 12 model with the lowest battery life, coming in at 15 hours of video playback compared to the iPhone 12's 17 hours. For streaming video, the iPhone 12 mini offers 10 hours of playback, while the iPhone 12 offers 11 hours. The iPhone mini outperforms the iPhone SE, but doesn't measure up to any of the other larger iPhones.

The 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max features 20 hours of video playback, offering five hours longer battery life than the iPhone 12 mini.

Apple breaks battery life down in three categories: video playback, video playback when streaming video, and audio playback. Battery life info for all iPhones in the current iPhone lineup is listed below.
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max - Up to 20 hours video playback, 12 hours streamed, 80 hours audio
  • iPhone 12 Pro - Up to 17 hours video playback, 11 hours streamed, 65 hours audio
  • iPhone 12 - Up to 17 hours video playback, 11 hours streamed, 65 hours audio
  • iPhone 12 mini - Up to 15 hours video playback, 10 hours streamed, 50 hours audio playback
  • iPhone 11 - Up to 17 hours video playback, 10 hours streamed, 65 hours audio
  • iPhone XR - Up to 16 hours video playback, 65 hours audio
  • iPhone SE - Up to 13 hours video playback, 8 hours streamed, 40 hours audio
All of Apple's new iPhone 12 devices support fast charging and can be charged to 50 percent within 30 minutes using a 20W power adapter and the included USB-C to Lighting cable.

Apple would have increased thinkness by an inch to accommodate the extra life to iPhone 12 mini

Perfectly fine by me. Wired CarPlay twice a day will charge it up a bit anyhow.
I hopped on this train when I got my XS January last year and now suffer terrible battery life because of it. 88% battery health. And algorithms that think they know me and trickle charge to “save the battery” when I need it juiced up. 2/10 experience would not recommend. Have never been disappointed with an iPhone battery life until now. That said, I used to upgrade every year so this is the longest I’ve kept a phone, and that could have something to do with it. Still, a year and a half and I’m surprised at how much the battery has degraded.

Battery health on my X after just over 12 months with a new battery is at 89%. Absolutely shocking. I purchased a 12 mainly due to battery life, but as soon as I held it in my hand I didn’t like it. I’ve returned it & will be preordering the 12 mini on the 6th. I am a bit nervous about battery life.

Thats not great. My XR is 89% as well but its two years old which I find acceptable. It will be interesting to see how great the mini battery life is. It really is the perfect form factor but I dont dare to guinneapig it myself

It almost makes me want to purchase an iPad for media consumption. I own a Mac & I’ve never understood the point in owning a Mac and an iPad. I don’t see myself using it, but I guess it would stop me from using my phone so much.

I personally “don’t care” about the number and it’s not something I obsessively (or even rarely) check. But now that I feel like my battery life is dreadful - that’s when I care. I blame half of it on wired CarPlay.

Such 1st world problems! [...] “Thous doest complain too much”
Well, we are also paying first world luxury prices. And how can we have third world problems in a first world country? I’m grateful I have food, water, transportation, a roof, and luxuries. But I work hard and pay for those luxuries. As a result, I have expectations. Apple is not donating these iPhones to us. For a premium price, I expect premium amenities. And I love my iPhone. But to indirectly condemn people about frustration that they pay good money for is silly. It’s okay to be frustrated. Life will go on without 18 hour battery life. But the purpose of this MacRumors forum is to discuss these things, not talk about gratefulness or third world problems.

It seems pretty sketchy and Apple corporate biased to have the glaring omission of the 11pro and 1promax from the battery listings as these 2 phones blow out the 12 and 12pro.
